This is a MUST READ for anyone in the suburbs of Chicago needing dryer duct cleaning, and anyone considering this company, Mr. Duct. I will give you the facts of my encounter with Mr. Duct, and you come to your own opinion. A 2-man crew came to my home, and one climbed into my attic, where most of my dryer duct runs. He quickly came down and said, "we can't clean your dryer duct," and gave me the impression there was a lot of damage up there...ducts had come apart, lint was everywhere, blowing out of the open ducts...plus, told me the final portion of my ductwork was flimsy plastic and he was afraid they would poke a hole through it. This was very surprising to hear, because I had my duct cleaned regularly over the years, the last time 18 months ago, and the previous cleaner (who has retired) did not say anything about damage (my attic is accessed by a trap door in the ceiling, so I wouldn't have seen the actual situation). The original quote given over the phone by Mr. Duct for cleaning the duct was $175. The young man in charge took out his calculator, did some math, and shocked me with a new quote of SIX HUNDRED TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS to repair and clean the ductwork. I refused, of course. Then, the young man said he had to make out an invoice, to show his boss they had been here, but there would be no charge. He handed me the completed invoice for my signature, and I was angered to see the place where I was supposed to sign was titled "Authorization," and the following was just above the signature line of this $625 invoice: "You (meaning Mr. Duct) are authorized to perform the services listed above....I agree to make payment in full upon satisfactory completion of the services..." The young man was apparently trying to trick me into committing in writing for the work! Naturally, I did not sign in the place he wanted me to sign, but just wrote a comment in another place on the form, "I am not committing to do this work," and signed. My story, fortunately, doesn't END badly. I did my own internet search for another duct cleaning company, and luckily, found The Lint King, another Angie's List provider, at 847-874-4805, owner Paul Meyers. A nice, polite and personable young man came out to my home from The Lint King, went into my attic, said there was MINOR work to be done in re-attaching my ducts, and did NOT say he "couldn't clean my duct," regardless of whether he did repairs or not. He did the repair work, then cleaned my dryer duct, and the charge including repairs and cleaning was $185 (compared to the $625 Mr. Duct would have charged). I consider myself very lucky to have found a competent, trustworthy company to clean my duct from now on. Their pricing for just duct cleaning is in the range of $125 or less, compared to the rest of companies I looked at, who charge between $175 and over $200. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.
