This was my 4th experience with Phalen Mortgage Group (Joe Phalen, Jon Altizer, and CJ Paloucek) in 7 years.  All 4 times were excellent.
I especially recommend CJ Paloucek, with whom I worked closely on all occasions.
Operations were consistently flawless - phone calls and e-mails were returned promptly, every detail was attended to correctly, and potential complications were foreseen and pre-emptively avoided.
Actions I needed to take, plus other steps, were explained clearly, and status updates were provided frequently.
The rate and fees were highly competitive - I couldn't find any advertised that were lower.  Plus from prior experience I knew that the Phalen Mortgage Group would deliver dependably - no surprises.  So there was no point of using anyone besides Phalen.
The entire process was on-time and successful on the first attempt - which in my experience is not at all typical of this industry or the real estate closing process.  Phalen is clearly head-and-shoulders above its peers.
Closing occurred on-time.
Based on long experience, I can say that I've found Phalen to be scrupulously honest, in addition to being competent, diligent, and efficient.

We were referred to Jon Altizer at The Phalen Mortgage Group @ Guaranteed Rate by a neighbor who recently purchased a new house.  I called Jon for a pre-qualification, which I received the same day.  When we were ready to make an offer on a specific home Jon took our detailed application, we submitted the necessary docs, and received a pre-approval letter to accompany the offer, which included an aggressive 3 week closing to take place only a couple days after Christmas.  The seller was an out of state investment bank on the West coast.  Jon and his team (C.J., Rick, Jenna, and Linda) understood the urgency of our closing deadline and worked hard to get everything processed quickly and accurately.  Jon and his team were there at every step to answer our multitude of questions.  There were many challenges to this transaction (self-employment, new job, bank owned property, FHA funding, keeping our current condo, etc.), but they guided us through the transaction and helped us understand what documentation we would need to provide for the underwriter.  Jenna was especially helpful in expressing to the seller's attorney the urgency of getting us the information we need in a timely manner.  If it weren't for her, I think we'd still be waiting for title work instead of waiting for our cable to be hooked up in our new house (sigh).
