I'd been looking to replace my 20 year old speakers for our home theater for 5 or more years and upgrade from 5.1 to 7.1 in the process. I've gone out looking a few times over the years but every time decided not to upgrade due to a combination of expense and the hassle factor. There are lots of bad speakers for low prices and lots of great speakers for astronomical prices but I had difficulty finding some that fit into a family with kids kind of budget yet delivered and acceptable level of performance and value.
Deluxe Audio and Video ended up being the place that had the right combination of competent staff and product line to get me off the fence and finally replace my college era mismatched speakers. The owner, Bob Servos, is who I ended up buying my speakers from and he is very knowledgeable. I think that I was towards the bottom of his usual customer price point but he had a system that was exactly what I was looking for. Paradigm Series 7 for those are that interested. Two Monitor 9's, a Center 1, and 4 Surround 3s plus a DSP-3100 sub.
They were very quick on deliver, I think I drove home with 3 of the 8 speakers in the back of my car and they delivered the rest within a week or so and installed them the same day. Installation was a little more complex than anticipated seeing as we had an unfinished basement to run the wires but the back of our house sticks out about 2 feet from the foundation, making finding and drilling the up and down access in the back wall take a while, so installation cost was about twice what I was expecting. They ended up using two guys, but I saw the effort it took so didn't find that too objectionable. You can only get so accurate of an estimate from the owner's description (mine). The installation work was professional and looks good. The only thing that surprised me was that they used 16 gauge speaker wire. I have always used 14 or 12 ended up not worrying about it. The runs are about 20-30 feet and it seems 16 gauge is well within the butter zone for that length of run.
I don't anticipate buying more speakers anytime soon, but If I ended up needing to do so for some reason and wanted some quality equipment and service at a reasonable price, I'd go back to Deluxe Audio and Video.
