We built our home in in the summer of 2012. X-Pert Landscaping would be responsible for our patio and seat wall construction, gutter extensions, trees, bushes, flowers, and hydro-seeding across approximately 34,000 square feet of property. They would also be responsible for brush removal and stump grinding of approximately 1.25 acres.
The first red flag, which I only noticed later, was when Keith Cichy said the project, “would be the biggest one that he's ever worked on.and quot; I disregarded this as he regularly said with confidence, and quot;We do great work. We do great work.and quot; And, and quot;I will treat your property as if it were my own.and quot; We were spending approximately $10,000 more to use Keith when compared to the other bids that we received so I hoped that would be the case. He could not have been more wrong.
The second red flag was that Keith admittedly had very little experience hydro-seeding our lawn. It showed. The mulch/seed mixture was spread so thick in many areas of the lawn that it never decomposed and there was no growth at all. The surface layer of our lawn was a concrete cake of thatch that I had to manually rake and breakdown all fall.
I question some of the work that they did in other areas of the property but here is a small list of what we experienced:
- While laying top soil near my foundation wall they damaged our front porch in (3) different areas by gauging it with their bobcat - they only admitted to this after I saw the damage and they did not fix.
- They damaged my neighbor’s property (fence) with their truck and continued to drive away - I witnessed this they only fixed the fence after I disclosed what I saw.
- On at least (3) occasions I picked up their leftover garbage (water bottles, bags of fruit) from their lunch breaks.
- I was asked twice if (a) worker could come inside the home to use the restroom.
- One of the laborers tried to sell me a lawnmower.
- They were relocating a small (3-foot tall) white pine which was dug up and laid on the ground for 2 days before replanting. The white pine subsequently died and I was still charged $60. This was credited only after I complained and stated what happened.
- We have had several bushes trees die that were supposed to have been planted in a base of 4+ inches of top soil. Upon digging them up, they were planted in nothing more than orange, compacted clay.
We failed our 1st inspection, in part, because X-Pert Landscaping did not reconstruct our silt fence.
Lastly, all of the blocks that were used for our ledgestone (seat wall) and patio were stained yellow. The stains were unmistakable but the patio and seat wall were still constructed after which I mentioned the stains. The manufacturer of the stones came to the house and agreed to have them replaced.
The summer and fall passed and we were still not able to get the 'new' batch of stones to have the patio and seat wall replaced. So we would have to wait until next spring (2013). No big deal.
Move ahead to April, 2013. I have a garden with Japanese ferns, hostas, astilbes, heuchera, and more, which borders the patio that Keith's crew would be repairing. I spent the morning mulching the garden and given the crew a clear indication of where these flowers where planted and where they'd be sprouting from. Some of the flowers' new growth could be seen but not with all. This didn't seem to matter as they trampled the entire garden and areas that I clearly marked. Only after I shared my frustration with how careless they had been was I told, and quot;Well, we'll replace anything that was damaged.and quot;
Now it's July, 2013, Keith Cichy and X-Pert Landscaping say they have no intention of repairing the damage done to the garden.
Working with X-Pert Landscaping was an awful experience.
"This client was verbally abusive, very disturbed, and I have emails to prove it. This client spoke of all the contractors working on the job in this same way. He has no credibility. Our record of quality and high level of customer service for 18 years speaks for itself. I have an extensive list of very happy, repeat customers, who frequently refer new clients."
