Simon's Designed Hardwood Floors

Simon was incredible. We were under a tight timeframe to complete the work while we were away and before other vendors came to do other work on our house. Not only was his estimate the lowest of the three I obtained, by at least $1k, he came in under his own estimate. He dropped off samples of colors, made his own recommendations, fit us in on his timetable, and finished the job on time. Impressively, without telling us, he put felt tips on the legs of our furniture so that it would not scratch the floor again. He certainly didn't have to do that and it was a welcome surprise.

He sanded and stained the area twice because he wasn't happy with the way the stain looked after the first try. He said the best result would be to re-do the whole floor but understood that we needed to wait to do that. When we DO, we will certainly call him. He's a real pro!

Great service with a good price.   Simon and team did an excellent job explaining the process to my wife and I.  They were very accomodating to our needs and even replace the handrails on on staircase with a more modern, safer design.

Simon was responsive, and the job was done within a short time frame. We were happy with the result.

We had contacted Simon in early spring to get a quote, but due to our need to provide hospice care for a family member, we had to place our lives on hold for a while. When we contacted Simon in late November, he informed us that he was booked through the holidays, but he gave us a date in January to begin work. His installer arrived promptly on the date appointed.
Unfortunately, we were not ready for him; we had worked with so many contractors who failed to show up when scheduled, that we didn't take the appointment as firm, since we had no spoken to Simon in over 6 weeks, and we had no recent confirmation. (NOTE TO SELF: Simon's word is his bond; no need for the "Are you Sure?" confirmation the night before.)
Simon was good natured about that, and said he could come back in 3 days, as he could squeeze in another job in the meantime.
And he did. He worked with us to do one room at a time, so my husband, brother, and a friend of ours could shuttle several heavy, large pieces of furniture between rooms. It would have been too much of a strain to move everything down to the first floor, and back up the stairs again. He completed the first bedroom, then came back a week later to do the 2nd.
Price was reasonable, and the work was of the highest quality. This is the 2nd job Simon did for us, having installed hardwood on most of the first floor the previous year. I would highly recommend Simon's Hardwood Floors!

We recently moved into a new home with carpeting upstairs where the master bedroom and my daughter's bedroom are located. After just a few days it was clear that the carpeting was making my daughter and I sick - we'd wake up with headaches, stuffed up noses, etc.., so I knew we had to get the carpeting out and put in hardwood floors. After doing my research on Angie's List, I contacted 3 highly recommended Hardwood Flooring companies. All 3 companies were clearly top notch and the pricing for the job was comparable across the board, but after Simon came to my home to give me the estimate, I knew he would go the extra mile. For example, I was going to have to hire someone to move all our bedroom furniture downstairs while the floors were being done. It would have been expensive but I had no choice. On top of that, the downstairs was full of unopened boxes from our move which would have had to be moved out to the garage in order to fit the furniture. It was a bit overwhelming!  Well, Simon commented that typically it would be preferable to have the furniture all moved out so he could do the job all at once, but that he thought it would be easier on us as homeowners, if he did one room at a time so the furniture could be moved from one room to the other. He even offered to take care of moving the furniture (and did not charge a penny for it.)  And that was just the first time he went above and beyond, not the last! He had a job coming up with a contractor on a new home so it wasn't urgent that it be done right away - so he moved us up so we wouldn't have to keep suffering with our allergies to the carpeting. Also, my husband had hurt his back and Simon went to the trouble of painting the thin white baseboard because he didn't want my husband to have to do it. The man who worked with him (I believe his name is Eugene) was also excellent - very hardworking and polite, and great at what he does. When the job was finished, my husband was out of town so my daughter would have had to wait until he got back and could move her furniture back into her room. But Simon even went above and beyond again and came back the next day with his son and they carefully moved my daughter's furniture back and set it up just as she wanted it. When I was looking to hire a hardwood flooring person, I was hoping I would end up with beautiful new hardwood floors. I wasn't expecting anything else. But with Simon, it was clear that he wanted our entire experience of getting new hardwood floors to be a positive as possible. I couldn't be happier with the experience and the floors are perfect! I plan to hire Simon back as soon as have the budget to refinish the main floor hardwood. I highly recommend Simon! I have hired many, many contractors over the years and have had the pleasure of working with some really exceptional professionals, but I have to say Simon is at the top of the list!

Simon refinished our kitchen hardwood floor on a weekend when we were out of town, which was nice since we avoided the noise and dust.  When we got back, the place was spotless and the floor was beautiful.  You couldn't tell he had been there except for the transformed floor.  He was easy to deal with, willing to make an extra trip to pick up the key.  He explained his process carefully and gave me advice on maintenance of the floor.  He also let me know about a leak in an ice maker he had to remove to do the floor -- something we were not aware of.  I have hardwood floors throughout my condo, and when I am ready to have the rest refinished, I will definitely call Simon.

Totally impressed with quality of workmanship and professionalism of service.  As a real estate broker, I had a sale that was dependent on having the squeaky hardwood floors of a condo removed and new sub-flooring and new hardwood floors installed.  Perfection was needed in a limited amount of time.  I obtained several estimates for the owner of the condo.  Not only was Simon's estimate the second to the lowest, his demeanor made us feel confident he was the right person for the job.  He wanted to make sure the work was done in accordance to condo regulations so the owner would have no problems.  Simon also prepared a sample board of the hardwood and finishes so the future buyer of the condo could approve workmanship and finish before he started.  Simon had a tight time schedule and worked tirelessly to meet the dead line.  Needless to say, my reputation was at stake because I had recommended him after finding him on Angie's List.  The sale of the condo was also at stake.  Simon absolutely delivered!  I will definitely use Simon in the future for my flooring needs and will confidently refer him to other clients.  You will not be disappointed.Simon is a pleasure to work with and has the skills and work ethic to complete your flooring needs.  Thank you, Simon!

They did a good job and it was of high quality as well.  They finished in time and were professional.  Their price was fair. Their price versus quality was excellent.

Simon provided an estimate promptly, offered very reasonable prices, and was flexible in scheduling the job. He arrived as scheduled and finished on time. He gladly fashioned an odd-size cold air return and easily coped with the other oddities of our 100-year old house. He moved all of our heavy furniture and took special care with an old piano. The floors turned out beautifully. I would happily re-hire Simon and his team and strongly recommend his work.

Fantastic! We bought a 1909 home with beat up/worn old wood floors. Simon's gave us back their original beauty. After completing a wonderful job on our main floor a month earlier, we had them back to complete our second floor and stairs. Simon and his crew are craftsmen, they're punctual and fast, and they are priced right. We couldn't be happier with the job they did. We highly recommend.

They were very professional. They arrived when they said they were going to. They sealed off the rooms that were not being refinished. They were very good at communicating and we were very pleased with the way the floors turned out.

Our 120 year old home has many layers of everything, and flooring is no exception. Before we even started ripping out layers of plywood and vinyl tile, Simon came out to give us quotes for various options - refinishing whatever original floor we might find underneath, adding a new layer of wood flooring on top of the plywood, and adding a new layer of flooring on top of the original floor. In addition to pricing (which was always right on), he was able to tell us the pros and cons of each option. When we decided to refinish the very rough old floor, Simon again was very clear about what sort of result we would be getting and about potential pitfalls such as finding matching wood for patches. He was happy to answer all of our questions about how floors are constructed, subfloors, and about different finishes. We appreciated how honest he was, and felt that he really wanted to make sure we knew what we were getting into (and that we would be happy with the result.) The workmen did an excellent job in horrible heat and very high humidity (with no air conditioning). Simon installed the shoe base molding himself and did an incredible job accommodating all the ins and outs of our elaborate (and never quite straight) baseboards. About a month later, we had them come back to refinish our first floor living & dining rooms and to install matching oak flooring in the entryway. The new floor flows seamlessly into the older flooring, and again the workmen did an impeccable job. The work always started and ended on time. The rooms that had work done were always carefully vacuumed. Rooms that weren't being worked on were closed off by plastic sheeting. For the amount of dust generated by the refinishing, the house stayed surprisingly clean. We could not be more pleased, and I would highly recommend Simon for any flooring job.

We did the painting and wallpapering for 2 bedrooms and adjoining hallway, but we decided to bring in a professional for finishing the floors. Joined Angie's List and found Simon's Design right here in our village. My husband called him on Thursday; Simon came for an estimate Friday evening, and the price he quoted seemed VERY reasonable. He was already in the middle of other jobs the following week, but he did keep in touch and managed to get to us by the next Friday, with a follow-up process Saturday morning. I wrote him a check for the exact price he had quoted. Simon and his partner both worked quickly and quietly, and the end result is fantastic. We discussed with him perhaps our stairway and kitchen floors for the future.

It as mixed experience. The workmanship on the floors was real good. There were some problems with the amount of dirt left over after the job. He did make an adjustment to the price when we talked to him about the amount of dirt left over. I would say that Simon themselves would be the only ones I would have do the work in the future. He had a helper do the work and I think that is what the issue was.

Simon was very competitive with his estimate. His was the second least expensive of all the estimates. He gave us estimates on buffing and clear coating the floors vs. completely sanding and re-staining. We decided to have him just buff and clear coat the floors because I don't think I could live with the mess during the sanding process. In no way was he trying to "sell" us on sanding our floors, a much more expensive process. Our hardwood floors were not properly installed and stained correctly in the first place, and Simon was careful not to promise something he couldn't deliver. I appreciated his honesty. He squeezed us into his schedule because we wanted to put our townhouse on the market soon. The work itself went fine. They showed up when they said they were going to and cleaned up afterwards. The floors look great. 100 times better than they did. I guess time will tell as to the quality of the work. We have a large dog and a small child so our floors take quite a beating. Throughout the entire process, from the estimate to the scheduling, to the actual work, Simon was prompt and reliable, which is a rare trait in dealing with any contractor. Several days after the work was completed, my child damaged an area the he had filled with wood filler. I called him to ask how I could repair it and he insisted on coming back out to do it himself. Simon is a true professional. I would hire him again in a heartbeat.

Simon was by far the most knowledgeable hardwood floor guy (we had numerous quotes). He helped us choose an appropriate floor (four inch Brazillian Cherry). He went out of his way to make sure the job was completed on time and perfectly. His installation of the baseboards and removal of existing kickboards, etc. was excellent. His quote for the work was more than fair (he didn't nickel and dime us when supplies did not equal estimations). He more than met our expectations. We give him the highest marks and we'd recommend him without hesitation.

When we took down a wall to combine two rooms into one, there was an area in the flooring that needed to be patched. Simon took great care to do that in a way the blends so well you would never know it had been patched. In addition, he refinished all of the floors and they look beautiful! we couldn't be happier! He was a pleasure to work with.

Personnel was friendly, answered questions, and left a clean room. There was minor stain spillage on the flagstone. After bringing this to Simon's attention, that day he brought a powerful solvent which quickly removed the stain. I am very pleased with the room and will hire him again for the next room.
