Ross was extremely responsive from the beginning of our job. He accommodated our schedule at all times, pushed to meet some tough deadlines due to the coming winter, and was on the job at all times when needed to supervise the window installation. It couldn't have gone better. I was also very pleased at how livable the project was and the way in which the house was left; very clean. The work was done beautifully. I have had a number of neighbors ask who did our work since the windows are stylistically different than what we had before, our house looks quite different. We have had many compliments and I have referred several friends to Ross for windows as well.

The quality of the material used was good, but the installer moved the location of several downspouts without asking us about it first. He also failed to relocated one downspout that we had asked to be moved. When we asked that one of the relocated downspouts be moved back to it's original location it took a long time to get the work done and the quality of the rework was poor. We had to have them come back a third time to fix it again. I had to argue with the installer to get him to finish the work properly.

The end result is great, though the process was challenging. The job was started late, was supposed to start in fall, and didn't start until summer of the next year. This was due to contractor not getting permit on time and then other delays. Crew was inconsistent in being on the job, there for a few days, then not there. Several things had to be done over. Stain and sealer put on long after it should have been. Owner was responsive to difficulties though it was tiring always having to address things.
Response from QUALITY FIRST CONSTRUCTION
"I MUST RESPOND TO THIS GRADE AND COMMENTS WE RECEIVED ON THIS PARTICULAR JOB. WE STARTED LATE AS IT WAS FALL & EVANSTON NEEDED 3 MONTHS TO ISSUE A PERMIT. THEY WERE BEHIND DUE TO ALL OF THE NEW CONSTRUCTION AT THAT TIME. IT WAS I, WHO SUGGESTED THAT THE HOMEOWNER HAVE THE WORK DONE IN SPRING FOR HER BENEFIT, AS WE WERE GETTING CLOSE TO WINTER! EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A SHARP RISE IN LUMBER COST, I LEFT THE COST THE SAME AS IN THE ORIGINAL QUOTE FROM THE PREVIOUS FALL SEASON. I WAS IN CONTACT WITH THE CUSTOMER ON A DAILY BASIS. I TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN OUR CARPENTER'S WORKMANSHIP. MANY OF OUR CARPENTERS HAVE BEEN WITH US FOR 20+ YEARS. AS A LOCAL AND FAMILY OWNED COMPANY, OUR REPUTATION IS IMPORTANT TO US. THERE WERE SOME PROBLEMS THAT CAME UP DURING WORK, AND I PERSONALLY HAD THEM CORRECTED IMMEDIATELY. I AM PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST ALL OF OUR PORCH & DECK WORK ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE CITY AND THE SUBURBS. ALL WORK WAS COMPLETED IN A PROFESSIONAL AND WORKMANSHIP LIKE MANNER BY OUR CARPENTERS. THE END RESULT IS A BEAUTIFUL MULTI-LEVEL SUN DECK. I WISH THE HOMEOWNER MANY YEARS OF ENJOYING THE DECK WE BUILT. IT WILL SERVE THEM WELL FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. I FEEL THAT THE GRADES GIVEN IN NO WAY REPRESENT THE WAY THE JOB WAS HANDLED FROM CONTRACT TO COMPLETION. SINCERELY, ROSS A. SHAVEL"

This company who was the third of three estimates and was lowest. Ross, the contractor, was always on time or called. The work crews were excellent and porch looks great. They were able to complete the job in the time promised which was 6 1/2 days(after permits were obtained, see below). The company gets A+ all the way around. Doing a porch in the current climate of extreme caution about safety of porches in the City of Chicago was trying for both the contractor and us. The City of Chicago building Department required a great deal of documentation and changed the rules in the middle of the project. The contractor kept us informed for the whole permit process and managed as well as he could. The permit process took over four months but the porch was started within days of getting the permit. (The City of Chicago gets a D-).

This estimate was lower than one other company and equal to another. The other didn't do porches which we also needed. (See Decks and Porches). Ross was great with checking out the roof, organizing the work quickly and efficiently, responding to calls, keeping appointments or calling. The crew was timely, courteous, and very professional. We love the new roof and fascia, and how much better it makes the place look.

I AM HAPPY WITH THE END RESULT, THOUGH THERE WERE ISSUES ALONG THE WAY. THE TRIM ON THE FRONT DOOR NEEDED TO BE REDONE--THIS WAS HANDLED WELL BY ROSS, THE CONTRACTOR, AND IT WASN'T AN ISSUE. IN MY INITIAL MEETING WITH HIM, HOWEVER, HE NOTED THAT THEY TAKE STORM WINDOWS OFF TO INSTALL THE TRIM. I LIKE THIS APPROACH, HOWEVER THEY DID NOT DO THIS DURING THE INSTALLATION PROCESS. IN FACT, THEY BENT THE STORM FRAMES SLIGHTLY TO SLIDE THE TRIM UNDER. THIS WAS UPSETTING AND THEY NEVER RECTIFIED IT. I HAD TO POUND OUT THE DENTS MYSELF. IN ADDITION, THE CAULK INSTALLATION AROUND THE WINDOWS WASN'T COMPLETED AND I HAD TO GET THEM TO TAKE CARE OF THIS. I REALLY LIKE THE END RESULT OF THE WORK--BUT THERE WERE ISSUES THAT HAD TO BE ADDRESSED.

THEIR SERVICE AND CRAFTSMANSHIP IS FIRST RATE AND THEIR PRICES ARE VERY COMPETITIVE. THE CO-OWNER, ROSS, WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL IN MAKING DESIGN AND MATERIAL SUGGESTIONS, AND DISCUSSING OPTIONS. THE WORKMEN WERE VERY DEDICATED AND WORKED QUICKLY, BUT CAREFULLY. WE ARE PLANNING TO USE THEM AGAIN SOON TO REBUILD OUR BASEMENT STAIRS.
