We had our roof and 8 skylights replaced 9/2006 by TVC Improvements, Inc. of Davenport, IA. The skylights were never installed correctly (in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions/specifications...VELUX) and they leaked over time. VELUX sent a representative and verified that all 8 skylights were not installed per their written instructions. If TVC Improvements had performed their work correctly in 2006, I would not have needed to hire a 2nd contractor to fix the problems from the 1st contractor and at a considerable additional expense. So, I contracted with Peterson Roofing Company to reinstall the skylights (replace the flashing/roofing material In Accordance With the manufacturer's specifications...IAW), replace the flashing/roof material around the chimney and replace the boots on 2 roof vents (TVC Improvements didn't replace the vent boots when the roof was replaced in 2006 and the old boots were worn and cracked). I assumed Peterson Roofing would reinstall the skylights, flashing and roofing materials IAW with VELUX specifications and our contract but I found the installers were installing the skylights based on how the senior installer has been installing skylights and roofing materials for over 28 years. I had to get the owner of the company involved to have the installers start over and reinstall the skylights (again) per the manufacturer specifications. I was quite adamant with Peterson Roofing to have the skylights installed per the manufacturer as VELUX has an iron-clad 10 year warranty against their skylights leaking for skylights purchased since 2010. My skylights were initially purchased before 2010 so mine do not fall under the current VELUX 10 year warranty but I determined that if they were installed per the manufacturer specifications, they shouldn?t leak in the future. Since I had to be very direct with the contractor to have my skylights installed per the manufacturer, I have to wonder how many skylights this company has installed their way verses the VELUX specification since 2010 thus voiding the 10 year manufacturer?s warranty against leaks? Additionally, Peterson Roofing had to install 1x3 cedar trim around the chimney where they replaced the flashing and they were not going to prime the wood before installing the trim so I had to prime the wood myself. When the job was supposedly complete, they did not paint the trim they installed and I was told by the company owner that they do not paint, but made an exception as I was not going to pay the bill until the job was completed. One major issue I had with Peterson Roofing Company is that they do not communicate well with the customer! When I signed the contract, I was told they would start the job the following week?2 ½ weeks later they showed up without contacting me, and when the repair crew determined the job was complete, they left and not another word until I had to contact the company about the trim not being painted. As an additional note, most insurance companies will not approve a claim for skylight leaking water damage due improper installation?I found this out from our home owner?s insurance company adjuster that inspected our skylights after I submitted a claim.
We never got an invoice, and after several calls they finally sent someone over to collect the $400 for the repairs. I have no idea what was done, how long it took nor when they did it. The man that came over just wrote on a sheet of paper that was supposed to serve as my and quot;receiptand quot;. No guarantee of work either.
Several weeks later, I noticed the area was still leaking again (saw water in the basement around the base of the exhaust chimney). I again called Peterson and explained the problem to them. Again, I have no idea when they came out nor what work was performed. I never did receive an invoice for THAT, but the roof no longer leaks, so I guess the problem is solved.
The whole thing was kinda sketchy and not receiving an invoice was really frustrating.
The gutter crew who arrived a week later and were just as efficient and completed their work in a half day.
Both crews knew their business and were responsive to any problems we pointed out. They left the sight each day in a very orderly manner with all materials and tools stored or removed from the job sight. When they finished the job the sight was well cleaned as advertised.
Overall this was a extremely proactive company from the owner through to the labors. They provided a through inspection, a clear explanation of the material to be used and guarantees of both labor and materials.
I would recommend Peterson Roofing as providing excellent products , well trained employees and service.
Of four bids, they were the 2nd highest ($7200, $7800, $8800, and $15200). I went with them because they were in the ball park of the other two lower bids, and the most professional of the three. Ryan explained everything during the bid process, showed copies of bonding, insurance, and made me feel at ease. I waited 3 months before making a decision. They were able to do the work within a week of my call. Very professional, and very good cleanup, left no traces of construction behind.
(ps - in case you were wondering, the $15000 bid belonged to HomeWorks - bidding same work)Only complaint was that the air hose for the nail guns beat up my wifes tulips. Otherwise a fast, effecient, and quality crew. Will look to them to do my detached garage next year!
Over 50 square of roofing on a very steep roof completed on time.
