After having a false alarm with our carbon monoxide detector, we decided to be on the safe side and have our furnace serviced to make certain it wasn't emitting CO. My wife called Ed and he was at our house two hours later on the same day. He explained everything he was doing, verified I was ok with any additional charges that might result from the service, and did an excellent job. This will be a contractor we use again as well as recommend to others.

We have an old farm house that had inadequate cooling on the second floor. Our condenser was not too old, so it seemed to be a problem that was not going to be solved simply by replacing the AC or just sizing up the unit. Additionally, our furnace was over 30 years old, so it seemed like a good time to redesign and update the entire system.
I had 3 companies out to do an estimate:
1) a high velocity AC system. Very expensive and did not address my furnace issue at all.
2) a larger local company that sent a sales person and they immediately began working up a quote to "size up" the AC
3) Ed from Around the Town came out and spent time looking at the existing system and diagnosing the real problems that I had.
Ed was the only one who not entirely in sales mode 100% of the time. His first order of business was to figure out how to properly solve my problem. I had a feeling that my duct work was wrong, but I did not mention it to the people who came out to bid on the job to see if they knew what they were talking about. Around the Town were the only ones to suggest that putting in new equipment was only part of what was needed.
We had no cold air return on the second floor. One of the vents on the second floor was capped. We need 1 more (ideally 2 more vents run to the second floor). And we also had to redesign the main plenum in the basement to create sufficient back pressure to properly feed the second floor.
I was very pleased with his diagnosis and his plan of attack made sense to me. Some of the details could not be worked out until we got a better look behind one of my walls, but Ed had a few ideas, so I was confident we could make it work. His quote was competitive compared to the other companies and was still a great value even with the extra work that needed to be done.
We had a slight delay getting the system in, but the issues were properly communicated and a week later we were up and running and the system was very effective. He selected equipment that was appropriate for my space and budget. Compared to the competition he was selecting high quality (Trane) but lower cost options and not pushing me to overdo it with an expensive multi-staged furnance or oversized AC unit that would be overkill for the size of my house and our usage patterns.
Ed helped me prepare all of my rebate paperwork and got it back to me quickly.
We did have one issue with the condenser losing coolant later in the summer, but Ed and his crew came out and quickly resolved the issue free of charge.
Overall, I'm very happy with the new system and plan to call Around the Town for any HVAC needs in the future.

My twenty plus year old forced air furnace would not light. Not only was my old furnace inefficient but the hot air vent system had been installed incorrectly. The hot air vents were located near the interior walls of my home right next to the cold air returns more or less. The hot air vents should be located towards the exterior walls and away from the cold air returns.
Ed came over Friday for a service call, explained what was needed to get the old furnace up and running again and without prompt he explained my hot air vent system inefficiencies. I decided to go with Around the Town to install a new 95% efficient furnace and update the hot air vents. Ed came back Saturday and in one day completed job at the agreed price. He did a great job and I will absolutely use them again.

On Sunday 7/15/2012, our air conditioning stopped working so I called Around The Town immediately. The technician was out within 2 hours and found that the problem was actually a defective circuit control board in the furnace. He was able to get it going until the part came in. Which I really appreciated because the outside temps have been near 100 degrees.I am happy to report that the job has been completed and now I have a prompt, reasonable and dependable company to service my furnace and air conditioner in the future.Thank you Ed

Around the Town gave me the best price as an Angie's List customer. They showed up on the day they promised, started working immediately. They were very efficient and respectful of my property. They cleaned up after they were done. They finished in about 3.5 hours and did a great job. I would definitely use them again.

I was in need of a new AC unit. I called Ed, and he came out and explained all of my options, and described which unit was best suited for my situation. He did not try to sell me the most expensive unit. He explained why the unit he recommended was the best for my house.
Ed and his crew installed the new AC unit in about a half day. They were on time, and very professional with all of their work. Everything was cleaned-up when they were done.
After a 2 weekends of intense heat, the AC unit they installed has worked perfect. I highly recommend ?Around the Town? for any type of heating/AC needs.

I called Around The Town Heating and Cooling on a Saturday afternoon (around 4pm) because my central air unit was making a very loud, roaring noise. I knew there was a problem but didn't know what was wrong. Naturally, the unit decided to experience problems just before the Memorial Day holiday AND the day before Chicago's hottest day on record in May (temp reached 99 degrees). Ed answered my call right away and suggested I not run the unit just in case it was the compressor. When he asked which day I wanted someone to come out, thinking there is no way I could get anyone out before Tuesday with Monday being a holiday, I stated Tuesday afternoon figuring I would go to work for a half day and arrive home around 1pm. I was totally shocked when Ed stated he could come out the next day (SUNDAY) at 9am!! Naturally, I quickly agreed to the appointment.
Ed arrived at 9am sharp. When I answered the front door, he didn't even come inside, he asked if the unit was around the back and when I said "yes", he immediately headed for the backyard. He quickly diagnosed the problem as a freon leak and refilled the unit. He then came inside and checked the unit in the basement. He stated although my unit was very old (original unit when the house was built in 1982), it was in good working condition. He suggested adding some stop leak which had worked wonders on many older units he had serviced. I told him I would definitely be willing to give it a try.
While writing my receipt, Ed asked how I had heard of his company and I stated "Angie's List" and he immediately gave me a discount. I am glad he asked because I never would have volunteered that information since I often can't find companies on Angie's List who are close enough and willing to service my area (suburb of Chicago). Ed was very knowledgeable, personable and very professional.
Overall, my experience with Around The Town Heating and Cooling was GREAT and I would highly recommend the company!! I plan to make them my company of choice for all my future heating and cooling services.

Called them to set up an appointment for later in the week. They asked if I was going to be around that same day and I told them when I was going to work and they then came over in 20 minutes. Art and his assistant Chris were very professional explain everything they were going to do, explained it would be extra to recharge system. Answered all my questions. Would definitely use them again.

Our a/c stopped working the day before a holiday weekend with forecasts close to 100. Around the Town were very polite and helpful on the phone, and were able to set up a same-day appointment (where even other companies with 24/7 service said they couldn't come until next week because of the holiday weekend). Ed was prompt and very helpful. He explained everything, showed me what was happening, and gave a range of recommendations -- no sales pitch, just information. We had the capacitor replaced, the unit cleaned, and the refrigerant recharged. The house was cool before he even left. I highly recommend them and will definitely use them again.

Around the Town does a superb job with all of the work they do, and this is reflected by the number of times I have asked them to help out with all the work we have done on our house. Knowledgable, punctual, and friendly are just a few words to describe the crew, and they always do high quality work in a timely manner. Almost every time I have called them they have come out the same day and started immediately. We are always glad to have them fix the problems, and know that they are fixed right.

They provide an extra level of service. They remember who I am all the time. I would give them a very high rating. They sold me a furnace because mine went out. He was very honest with me with what was needed for the home and gave me a fair deal. They don’t over charge.

They send two young guys and they were not familiar with the type of boiler I have. It is a very old boiler and they did not know the first thing about the boiler. They did not even know how to turn it on and they wanted to charge me. So I ended up calling their office. They could not do anything. As a matter of fact I think they did more damage than good. There were sparks flying out. I ended up talking to their manager. It was fiasco. The manager was supposed to come out the next day because he said he was more experienced and I never heard from him again. I would not recommend them. They were on time. I will not use them in the future.

"This was an unfortunate case of misunderstanding between this member and my company; for which I am sincerely apologetic. The original call was placed for a boiler cleaning/tune-up, however when my tune up service guys got out to the member’s apartment building, the boiler was not functioning, matter of fact the boiler was disconnected and not operational at all. We did not charge this member. My hope is that in the future we can interpret these types of misunderstandings before they happen, because our number one goal is customer satisfaction."

Overall the guys did an amazing job. Ed, who was the lead technician for the job, was very friendly and supportive of the work to be done. The plan was just to disconnect the freon (refridgerant) line from the A/C's and then the roofers would lift them to put the new roof under them. Ed and his team went above and beyond the job to also disconnect the power from the A/C units and move the A/C units off of the roof entirely. This work was definitely appreciated and helped the roofing work proceed more quickly.
The roofing contractor originally quoted 1 hour to complete the roofing work and so the A/C guys were going to stick around to put the A/C's back together after completion of the roof work. When it actually came time to do the roof job, the roofing guys said it would take 5 hours. Ed and his team were very flexible and were willing to come back later in the day to reassemble and recharge the A/C units without additional price or hassle.
Ed and his team continued to help troubleshoot the A/C units when problems arose during their restart. They acted quickly and efficiently and got all A/C's working in a timely manner.
When a problem (caused by the roofers) was identified the next day regarding the A/C's, Ed and his team once again came out very soon after being contacted and corrected the problem.

After meeting with several companies (from large to small) about replacing a furnace and installing new A/C (no central air previously), Ed came across as really knowing his stuff the most. Not only did his conveying of his HVAC knowledge impress me but his honesty too. He stuck to his word & contract even when the job turned out to be a bit more involved than anticipated. He re-worked the ductwork on my old 2-story house to work better for A/C and installed a new high-efficiency furnace as well. Having gone through a hot summer, I can say it has worked well. He has been good in returning calls and answering questions after installation as well. I would definitly recommend him.

I called Ed at Around the Town as my third estimate/opinion on a nagging HVAC problem in South Loop. I had a duplex with a second floor that was 90 degrees in the winter because of the southern exposure and hotter in the summer because the A/C couldn't cool the second floor properly. Ed sat down with me for almost 2 hours. He really takes an intellectual interest in his work. Rather than simply tell me I had to replace everything for $7500, which is what the two others told me, he figured out exactly what the technical issue was and how to solve it without replacing the whole thing. He replaced only a few parts and had the condo at 70 degrees in the summer for the first time in 3 years! Then, he came back to fix an unrelated issue with a blown connection on the roof, which he offered to do for free. I paid him $300 because he spent the entire day on it and used his own parts. I am now contacting him about additional work in a new house I just purchased.
