"Although I can’t remember the specific visit, obviously I said something about weight that did not go over very well and I apologize about that. The notes in the record say that we estimated the Body Condition Score (BCS) to be 4/5 with 3/5 begin ideal, 4/5 being overweight, and 5/5 being obese. Unfortunately, BCS is not a very accurate way of estimating body fat percentage so….for awhile….we used the Body Fat Index (BFI). BFI has been shown to be more accurate than BCS for the estimation of body fat percentage (56% accurate for BFI but only 13% for BCS) in this study here http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24846428 Having said that….we discontinued using the BFI for cats nearly two years ago for two reasons. First, although it is a lot more accurate than BCS, BFI still gets the wrong number 44% of the time and it is usually too low of an ideal body weight. And second…when we reported these numbers to clients we found a lot of pushback. I believe that trying to keep our cats lean will keep them healthier and make my job easier but in order to help we need them to come back for routine visits and weight rechecks and BFI made a few people actually switch to different clinics because of it. So we went back to BCS and that has been working well for retaining clients, not so well for getting cats to lose weight. Anyway, probably more than you wanted to know about BFI testing. Again I’m sorry it didn’t work out for us but I hope you guys are doing well :) Dr. Frost"
Dr. Frost saw Murphy, as scheduled, and not long into the examination, he suspected Murphy had Cushings disease. We had never heard of the illness. Dr. Frost took time to explain the symptoms and what would be necessary to confirm his suspicions. He asked his staff to obtain Murphy's records from our previous vet in the hope that they would not have to redo a recent blood test that the other vet and done. He did other blood work, took xrays and ran some tests. He listed options for us to consider regarding Murphy's care. Dr. Frost was very thorough, and encouraged us to take Murphy to a specialist to insure he got the best care possible. However, due to additonal findings Dr. Frost referred us to another vet for a second opinion. The vet that Dr. Frost referred us to concurred with Dr. Frost that Murphy actually had a number of serious issues in addition to the Cushings. Anything more that could be done, would have only extended the misery and suffering for our little friend. There was no doubt that we had to let him go. Murphy was with us for fourteen years, and very loved by my husband and I.
We have been to vets that gave you the sense that, while they accepted that people love and become very attached to their animals, they themselves see them strictly as animals. This is not the case with Dr. Frost. He is caring, sympathetic, and understands how a pet can transition from just a pet to a much loved member of your family. Murphy's passing was handled with consideration, and kindness. Dr. Frost and his staff were wonderful during this ordeal. They did everything possible to make Murphy comfortable and alleviate his and our fears.
Shortly after we lost Murphy we received a sympathy card that contained hand written condolances from Dr. Frost and each of his staff. Additionally, we received a card acknowledging a donation made by the clinic to the College of Veterinary Medicine for companion animal research in Murphy's name. These gestures meant so much to my husband and I as we grieved for our little friend.
I cannot recommend Dr. Frost and his staff too highly. They are extremely competent, and knowledgeable. But they are also kind, and sensitive to their clients feelings and needs - both animal and human. During Murphy's treatment Sue, the office manager, never failed to call with test results and was very supportive. The vet techs were careful with Murphy, and tried not to cause him any pain or discomfort.
I have had dogs all my life, and unfortunately, have lost two others. Dr. Frost is one of the best vets I have ever met. We are not ready to bring another dog into the family at this time, but will not hesitate to bring any future dogs to Dr. Frost for care.
Then Callie's health changed. She was a Sr dog that I had adopted so her real age was never know. Callie passed away quietly, and as we like to think will be waiting at the "Rainbow Bridge".
During this difficuit time, Dr Joe Frost was supportive & compassionate. His staff, Sue & Molly were wonderful and even signed a lovely sympathy card they sent to me.
Libby had her check up, and we found she needed a dental cleaning. I was kept informed all day on 6/2/2014, of how she was doing. Dr Frost discussed a finding on a tooth, and we made an informed decision as to the best treatment for Libby. I knew how she tolerated the anesthesia, the procedure, and what to expect when she got home. Rachel was at the clinic when Libby was ready to come home and took the time to show me the pictures & x rays done. The next morning, I received a follow up call from Sue as to how Libby was doing. And she is doing just fine because of the concern and expert care given.
Dr Frost and his staff have been providing care for my dogs since 2005. With other dogs, we shared some good & some trying moments. Dr Frost makes you feel as if you and your pet are the most important appointment for the day. I have been so satisfied for 9 yrs. & would not think of changing to another vet or clinic!
Thanks Dr Joe and staff. This review only gives "A" ratings, but I know you deserve an "A+" !
Please see the above for all of my comments.
