Poul's Landscaping & Nursery, Inc. is an award-winning landscape design, installation and maintenance contractor serving the northwest suburbs of Chicago for over 50 years. Poul’s is a family owned and operated business providing a complete array of residential landscape services. Poul’s is comprised of three departments: Landscape Maintenance, Landscape Design and Installation and a Wholesale Nursery which installs our locally grown trees. We provide free consultations, estimates and discounts for Angie's List members. Please note that each department has a different service area; please contact us for details. Our Full-Service Maintenance Department services include all weekly lawn maintenance and horticultural services. Some areas of expertise include dormant and summer pruning, mulching, and lawn, tree and shrub care. We also design and install rotating seasonal color displays in containers and planting beds. Property clean-ups and exterior holiday lighting finish out our season. The Design and Construction Division will work with you to create a personalized design to fit your lifestyle and budget. Please note, we have a $3,000 minimum job cost. We take care of the entire project, from permitting through final walk-through. Poul’s guarantees the quality of our stock and workmanship and will continue to be a resource for you long after the installation is complete. Our team of highly skilled and experienced craftsmen install hardscape components that are built to last. Examples of hardscape construction include paver driveways, patios, fire pits, retaining walls, stone masonry, pergolas, decorative boulders and outdoor kitchens. We deliver and install our nursery stock to residential clients. We are available to meet with you (by appointment) in order for you to personally select your own trees and evergreens. Poul's has the following accreditations: Certified Landscape Technician, Certified Arborist, Certified Horticulturist, Licensed Commercial Applicator.

We had a fabulous experience working with Poul's. Andrew was our main contact / Landscape designer. We had a vague idea of what we wanted done, and new we had to replace our aging retaining wall and driveway. We also wanted to enhance our curb appeal, but really didn?t know how to go about it. Andrew spent a great deal of time understanding what we liked or didn't like, and started coming up with ideas during our initial consultation. Once we agreed to move forward, he drew up plans and a proposal, that honestly blew our minds. It was not cheap, but it was fabulous. We requested zero revisions to his plan. We are very demanding customers so I cannot remember in the past when somebody nailed it on the first try.
The work itself took approximately two weeks once Poul's could get us in the schedule and our building permit was approved. The crew was absolutely meticulous, cleaning up each day and trying to impact us as little as possible during the extensive construction. They showed up every day on time and worked hard every minute they were here. Andrew visited the site daily to check progress. When small things came up, Andrew got them resolved before I could have to worry about it.
When the project was complete, one of the owners of the company came out to do a complete walkthrough and provide care instructions for our new plants.
The work completely transformed our house. All of our neighbors, and even the UPS delivery man commented on how nice it came out, and what a difference it made. Andrew is a very talented individual who is easy to work with, and Poul's is a great landscaping / hardscape company.
We would absolutely recommend them, and plan to use them for additional work in the future.

This was a very large job as the yard was out of control! They filled an entire dump truck full of yard waste and now it looks terrific! They came out with a group of 2 guys and I've never seen 2 people work so hard in my life. I think the price was a little high but, they squeezed me in for a rush job on a specific week that I was available and the result was beautiful!

We are just about to finish stage 2 of a 3 stage project. Andrew Ptasienski has been our designer and I can't say enough good things about working with this guy. He is easy to get along with and he has fun doing what he does. Plus he's just talented. He can not only visualize the final product, but figures out a way to make you understand it too.
Andrew communicates well via email and is not hard to reach. He isn't afraid to tell you what he really thinks, even if he disagrees, but he does it in a way that is collaborative and constructive.
He's honest about what work you should have done prior to his team's arrival and where you might be able to save a few bucks.
I can't recommend Andrew and the team at Poul's enough. Our next door neighbors thought he did such a nice job, they hired Andrew and Poul's to redo their front yard as well.
One downside: I actually had to chase him down the street to pay him. How often does that happen?

After an 8 month renovation of the interior and exterior of our home, the landscaping was the final piece we needed to finish before a big housewarming party. With a very tight timeframe and no idea as to what we wanted, we met with Andrew at our home. Andrew asked all the right questions, budget, timeline, likes and dislikes and what our overall vision was for the home. Andrew was great about giving us examples and really listening to what we wanted. Since we had such a tight timeline, Andrew was very quick to get us a proposal, quote, and a list of all the plants/trees he planned to use. He had listened and understood us and the vision so well, we were happy with and didn't have to change any of the plants he proposed.
The installation was scheduled promptly and the whole team was very professional and did excellent work. When the plants and trees arrived, they were beautiful, full, lush and very healthy looking. The installation went very smoothly and very quickly. A week later some one from Poul's came out to do a walk through with us to tell us about each plant and how to care for everything they had installed, a very nice and much appreciated touch.
Everyone from Poul's has been courteous, professional, overly helpful and understanding. Our housewarming party came and went and people were gushing over the landscaping. We will definitely be using Poul's again when we are ready to landscape our backyard.

Late last fall we needed a true landscape designer so we turned to Angie list and found Poul's Landscaping. RICK came for the initial brainstorming session to hear our vision of a perennial makeover. We are not plant experts so we were leaving it up to RICK who made a great impression that initial visit. RICK's next visit was to show us his blueprint drawing. It looked outstanding and he included pictures of the landscape that he was proposing which really brought the blueprint to life. With winter around the corner RICK suggested we plant only what would survive the coming months so we started with a few trees, boxwoods and bushes. This spring, RICK came back and finalized the rest of the perennial landscape and they were planted in June. RICK is extremely knowledgeable, creative, listened intently to what we wanted to achieve, and stayed within our budget. He was onsite every step of the way guiding his team (who were also wonderful and hardworking). The finished product is beautiful and we couldn't be happier. RICK's expertise and customer service went above and beyond all our expectations.

They came out in early May and gave me a estimate for the work I wanted done. After deciding to hire them based on the cost and their ideas; they started the job in early July. It took them 6 full days to complete everything. Throughout the whole process I was kept informed on what was going to be done daily. They've been back twice since the project was finished to correct some small issues. Dan and Rick were prompt in returning my calls and answering all of my questions. I couldn't be more pleased with the finished results. I have already recommended them to some friends because of the quality of their work.

Rick and his crew did a great job landscaping our front yard. During the process, Rick was responsive to our numerous questions and really worked to stay within our budget. The price was a little bit higher than our other bids, but I really liked the ideas Rick had for our design. He went to school for this and really knows his plants--not something I can say for some other landscape companies we had bids from. They had a good size crew working and finished the project in one day. I liked that they also gave instructional materials on how to care for your plants after the project was finished. Rick continues to answer my questions I may have about the plants and responds in a timely manner--even though the project was completed awhile ago. I would definitely use them again!

This was my 2nd year working with Poul's. Last year, I worked directly with Dan. This year, I worked with Jon. He was professional and prompt. I really appreciated our initial meeting where we discussed the work that needed to be done this year, and then the rest of our communication was by e-mail. It seemed to take longer to get the work scheduled this year - but I'll bet that's due to the long winter toying with schedules. The work was excellent. The crew arrived promptly and worked for most of the day. They did a great job and really were thorough about hauling all of the yard waste away. There were a few tasks that we had agreed on that were overlooked on that day. Nothing minor - trimming the lilacs, removing a rose bush, removing a small dead bush, and hard-pruning the dogwoods by the front windows. The weather has set them back a bit and I'm still waiting for the crew to come back to finish - but I'm not concerned. My experience with Poul's has been wonderful and I look forward continuing our relationship. They are prompt, easy to do business with, and they do what they say they'll do (and if something gets overlooked - they make sure to finish the job).

Jon has been very helpful and responsive from the start. He came out to give me an estimate and arrived at the time we agreed on. The estimate for a Spring clean up and weekly lawn maintenance is very fair and I signed the contract. I have reached out to Jon two more times to get some planting and evergreen trimming done. Both times he was very responsive and the jobs were done within a week. I'm very pleased with the level of service from Poul's.

Pouls Landscaping was amazing. The village turned a simple remove and replace of a retaining wall into a nightmare. Poul's had to provide them with a blueprint so the village engineers could approve. The approval process took longer than I thought. Poul's was patient with my constant calls to see if they obtained approval. After they received the long awaited approval they got back to me right away and scheduled the job. It turned out fantastic. Would use them again in a heartbeat.

Poul's did an exceptional job. Andrew came out and discussed what I wanted done. He drew up a plan for the patio within a week and was able to get the work completed before Thanksgiving. Throughout the project, Andrew stayed in contact with me. After removing the deck, we discovered some rotted wood along the foundation that needed to be replaced and a crack in the foundation that had to be filled. Andrew had a contractor replace the wood on a Saturday so they could stay on schedule.
The 3 gentlemen doing the work, did a great job. They worked extremely hard even when the whether started getting cold. They were here early every morning and made sure everything was cleaned up before they left. That included sweeping the driveway and picking up any trash. Their work on the patio was high quality.
I found it extremely easy to work wth Poul's. The plan was well thought out and what I wanted. They stayed on schedule despite a few unexpected issues that had to be resolved. The patio and the yard turned out more beautiful than I even imagined. I would highly recommend using Poul's for your landscaping project.

They did a wonderful job. It was a difficult task - especially the stairs which were tied in with the retaining walls. The end result is my stairs are much safer and user friendly than my previous railroad tie stairs. Since the work was done in November and the snow moved in quickly after they were done, I have not been able to enjoy the new stairs. I may habe more to add in the Spring.

After moving into this home earlier this year, we wanted to add a very usable outdoor space to our backyard. We knew how we wanted to use the space but didn't have any good ideas for what exactly to do to manage the limited area we had to work with. We decided rather than go with the lowest price we could find we really needed the expertise of someone who could creatively look at the space and come up with ideas.
We interviewed and solicited proposals from three landscape design firms, all with good feedback on Angie's List. One came, listened to what we were looking for and took a lot of measurements, then we never heard from him again. Another took all the information and called us later to inform us that our village had stormwater runoff restrictions and we already had our limit of impermeable surfaces, so there wasn't anything he could do.
Andrew from Poul's listened to what we were hoping to do, made a ton of great recommendations, and researched what the stormwater runoff restrictions were and found that we indeed did have enough under the limit to add a patio and still be within village requirements. I should note that he did this all above-board -- he worked with the village to get all necessary permits, etc so we know we are in compliance.
He listened well to what we said, incorporated our ideas but also made many good suggestions as well. He was very responsive to our many requests for changes, information on different plant types and care required, pros/cons of different paver material, etc. He has a good eye for what will look good together and how to blend the house, existing landscaping and hardscapes, and new material together.
The crew that did the work were professional and courteous. They had good attention to detail and didn't cut corners.

The quote process worked well and we explained to them all of what we needed. And they are going to come out supposedly next week to do the fall cleanup for us. And I am talking to them about doing next year.

My wife and I needed some fall clean up done and some flowers planted. We called several service providers, including Poul. Poul, and scheduled estimate appointments with all of the other providers. Out of all of them, Poul was the only provider that showed up to do the estimate. The other providers just blew us off.
When we called to get an estimate, they came out shortly thereafter and did a walk down of the our yard with my wife and me, and we talked with the representative about what we wanted to do. The representative also had some helpful ideas about what to do with our yard.
The quotation was completed in a timely manner. There was a little back and forth on the quote, but that is to be expected.
