The first day I thought that Spring might be on the horizon, Michael (the President of Hawkeye Roofing) gave me a call and asked about a date the following week to start the job. He estimated 2 days to completion, and requested an outdoor outlet be available and advised the cars be out of the driveway for the tear-off.
The roofing crew arrived when scheduled, finished about 2/3 of the roof on day 1 and the rest on day 2. Clean up was very efficient, so much so that if you hadn't known they were there, it would have been difficult to tell -- except for the newly finished roof! My neighbor across the street, a semi-retired tradesman, watched their work and told me "They did a nice job!"
Final price was within $100 of the estimate, well within my expectations. Overall, great communication, great work crew, great finished product, and a great experience.
Will end up repairing myself come spring.
The three man crew arrived on the afternoon of the day scheduled which was a pleasant surprise due to the rainy spring and summer we have had. They cleared the garage roof and prepared it to be shingled the next day before leaving...about a couple hours work and the logical stopping point.
The next day they were here promptly at 7:30 am. They worked until 7 pm due to some unexpected repairs needed for the wood around the chimney, some ice damage on the north side, and some correction from the previous re-roof (23 years ago) when the eyebrow window was removed by another roofer and the fill in of the space never matched the level of the old lumber if you knew what you were looking for. The work looks great, even from the inside of the attic space. We are talking an almost 90 year old house here and lumber sizing isn't what it used to be. They were working with boards, not plywood sheeting and shimmed it all nicely.
The last day, again, they were here at 7:30 am and worked to almost 6 pm to finish up before the weekend. The work site was well cleaned up...remember though, this is a really messy job to have done.
We did have some small bits and pieces in the gardens and on a couple raised window sills and only a couple nails on the driveway. Compare this to the previous roofer...who is a local, established and popular roofer...where we picked up nails for a week or so as they popped out of cement seams, had to have a glass ceiling fixture repaired due to materials being dropped h****** the roof, etc. Also, with a three man crew the noise was tolerable. Some of the roofers have a bunch of men on the roof, make enough noise to hear them a block away, and are in and out in one day. I prefer a reliable, professional job done with care the old-fashioned way.
Mike, the owner, was here to check on the crew at least twice a day and was very responsive to my questions. He also had a man here to put an extension on one of our downspouts and corrected a bent edge on the gutter, again from the last roofer, where someone had stepped on the gutter and bent it out causing drainage issues. The crew was quiet...no music blaring, just conversation and occasional calling out for materials or tools. If it weren't for the scraping and hammering, I wouldn't have known they were here. Once they were on the final trim out I had to go to the window to see if they were still here. They were trained roofers, not college kids on summer jobs, and took care with their work.
This was a great experience on a job I was dreading having to endure.
In spite of the rather cold and wet spring weather which can cause exterior project delays, Mike's crew started on the date promised and completed on time. All the debris was cleaned up each night before they left and we have found nothing left from the job. The roof itself was installed as well as we ever could have wanted with straight rows, edge trims and ridge lines - and I am extremely picky and detail driven.
While I will not speak for them, Mike and his crew did three of our next door neighbors along with us, and to me, their roofs look as great as ours and I've seen no debris from those jobs. Mike and his crew just rolled thru all four of us and all of our houses look great for it. I've suggested to others in our development looking for a new roof to call Hawkeye and have Mike come out.
Very, very highly recommended.
the street from me. There are not enough positive adjatives to compliment Mike and his crew.
