Classic Handyman

DO NOT HIRE if you want precision work. Very poor build, sloppy cuts, bad fits. 1st crew he sent over butchered our Victorian Newell posts, Alex had to buy 3 posts to replace. Then he slopped through a one day rebuild at lightening speed with no regard for fit. His attitude turned terrible, and he refused to take direction. My wife actually cried when she saw his “finished” product. Then he refused to return to fix anything we listed, calling it a “bad fit”. He got angriest when the word “architectural” was mentioned.

It went great. Plenty of communication when needed.

Alex underbid the projects severely, and we chose to go with him because his bid was the lowest and they had a perfect 5 star review everywhere we looked. Two stars rather than one because the back door installation went smoothly and looks good. The guys Alex sent out did work of varying quality. We asked for 2 gutters to be fixed. One of them is fixed and functions properly. The other one, less than a year later, is leaking in the same place as before. We asked for am old electrical post to be removed and siding replaced to cover up a hole where birds get in to nest. They removed the post, fixed the siding, and left a small hole where birds came back to nest this year again. We needed our trap door for our crawl space repaired and made safe. During the bidding process, Alex was confident that he could take care of the issue and had a plan. During the project, it became clear that he did not communicate to his guys what the plan was, and they had never done such a thing before. The spent a lot of time shopping for hydraulic hinges that are a specialty item I could have ordered since their boss hadn't thought ahead to provide them. Our new steel front door became scratched at some point during the work, and there was not really a solution offered. Also, the door jamb does not meet the flooring on the inside. There is a huge bare gap there. Where a hole was drilled to install the doorknob, the door is cracked. The front door is another area where the project was very poorly managed. The trim that came with the door was a different width than the trim previously around the door. I was given the option of putting old rotten trim back around the door or have them replace all of the siding around the door. I told them I didn't want rotten trim put back on the house, and they went ahead with replacing siding in the small area surrounding the door. We asked Alex to replace the aluminum corner pieces on our house. The product provided was a different size and texture from what was on the rest of the house. We were told they no longer made the smooth corner pieces. Then somehow they found some smooth corner pieces. They replaced all but one of those, which is really high up on the house, and that one is still missing. I don't know why they didn't replace it. We stopped asking them to fix things that were not properly done on the job because the bill was already out of control, and we couldn't afford to pay them any more than we already had. The bid for the work done was $2,527.11. We ended up paying $4690.22. That is 196% of the original estimate. I talked with Alex numerous times about the bill, and how I felt taken advantage of. He said he had gotten really busy and overwhelmed and the project had gotten out of control. He asked me how I wanted to handle things and said they were already losing money on the project because he had decided not to charge us for some things. We paid the whole invoice that he sent over, and I felt terrible and taken advantage of. That was our whole amount of money we had to finish all repair projects, and they did only some of what we had originally asked for since we could not afford to pay double on everything. I was given change orders to sign after work was done. Change orders are supposed to be signed before work is done. I did not agree to sign them. I am not a contractor, and I do not know what is involved in all of these projects. That is why we hired a company to do the work. My son was 12 months old at the time, and I also was unable to be project manager because of that. I expected Classic Handyman to handle project management, and they did a very poor job of that. I tried to be patient and I sat on this review for almost a year to make sure I didn't post it while I was still furious, but this really needs to be put out there. I hope to prevent anyone else from being taken advantage of by this company. Now we will have to pay someone else to come out and fix what I was afraid to ask Classic Handyman to finish.

Tony was excellent! Tony was on time and friendly. He paid special attention to detail, and explained everything he was doing. When an idea didn't go as planned we talked through it and Tony found the solution. I wanted a door installed off the kitchen to the basement to block noise. Tony did his best to install the door while filling any gaps along with borders to create a block. I am pleased with his work. Tony took the time to go to the hardware store to get the borders and any other items needed to complete the job so it was done the same day. He unclogged 3 drains, replaced the basketball backboard, and flipped the refrigerator door. The work took longer than anticipated due to odd size of the doorway, but Tony made the door fit perfectly and I am satisfied with the extra time spent. It is worth the extra money for sure. There were no hidden fees, just straightforward billing. Ashley was receptive from the start and kept me updated throughout the process. I am very happy with the service I received from Tony and Ashley at Classic Handyman. I will contact Classic Handyman again for work needed. Thank you Tony and Ashley! I truly appreciate your help!

Jesse arrived on time and was a pleasure to work with. He was very knowledgeable about the work, explained what he was doing, and an extremely hard worker. A true professional and Alex is lucky to have him on his team. The job took a little over 1 1/2 days, and I'm extremely happy with the results. This is the 2nd time I've used Classic Handyman, and would hire again without question.

Austin did a great job replacing my shutters. I would highly recommend him for future jobs.

Frank did a great job replacing a 50+ year old fixture in a tight recess. He finished faster than I expected, and then helped diagnose and fix another small problem.

Excellent. The handyman (Tony) was knowledgeable and prompt--he was ready to get to work every day, on time. The previous owners had made a real mess out of the floor in the basement and Tony got everything squared away. Poor guy spent probably 3 full days crawling around on his hands and knees fixing it, but it looks great now. We subsequently hired them again to do some cabinetry work, which was again outstanding. Highly recommend.

Fixing the siding and replacing the ceiling fan was quickly done. Troubleshooting and fixing the complex kitchen electrical problem was accomplished. Thank you Jesus and Frank.

Alex provided a prompt estimate for repairs to some exterior rot on a porch overhang.The price was a little higher than others, but decided to give Classic a try based on throughness of inspection as well as availability. Tony arrived promptly at 7:00am the morning of the work and got right to work.The job required removing gutters, siding, a section of fascia, and sistering some framing for added support. Some flashing was added for addition protection. Tony did a quality job and had everything back together like new. Nice Job.

They were very prompt in getting back to me through Angies List and emails. Frank came out today and tried to troubleshoot a ceiling fan issue and light fixture issue as well and fix the blinds. He was polite, courteous and honest. I would hire them again!!

I am delighted with the work done for us by Classic Handyman’s Tony and his assistant Austin. They repaired a large section of soffit and fascia that had been damaged by water and weather. Until the outer wood was removed it had been impossible to know the extent of the job. Throughout the day Tony kept me informed as they assessed the extent of the damage and progressed in fixing the woodwork. In the end slightly more wood needed replacement, but Tony was still able to complete the work very close to the original estimate. Tony is a skilled craftsman and it is evident that he takes pride in his work. I am pleased with the end result.

Tony was fantastic! He was polite respectful happy funny efficient helpful knowledgeable professional confident yet humble. It was really refreshing to meet someone like him in the industry. He was always on an even keel and never gave up. He was supportive of his coworkers and boss and clearly valued their assistance and opinions. Tony was out last week installing several tv wall mounts throughout my house. He was on-time, professional the entire time, &, most importantly, did a great job. I also peppered him with lots of random questions related to other projects I may want to do in the future; he was patient & knowledgeable. I would recommend to anyone looking for handyman.

Alex and his crew are top notch professionals who are punctual, skilled and careful. But what makes them truly outstanding is that they stand behind the quality of their work. A few weeks after installing a pocket door for us we noticed a small scratch in the door caused by a nail inside the door casing. They quickly responded to our call to address this problem and fixed it free of charge. Very impressive. And Frank, one of the workers, was particularly focused on ensuring our satisfaction. The only negative about using this company is that they are not cheap. But give their work and trustworthiness, they are worth it.

I had Alex's team work on several projects I needed to get done in a short time frame. They were very accommodating and did excellent work. Projects included ceramic tile replacement, attic entrance alterations, microwave install, toilet replacement, custom window replacement. They even came up with a clever solution for the attic entrance that looked much nicer than what was originally requested (they checked with me first) and avoided some annoying problems. As far a price goes, while they may be a little more than you might pay an individual, you really do get a lot for that money. It's worth it.

I contacted Classic Handyman to have some siding repaired and soffit replaced on my house. They were quick to come out and provide an estimate, and were able to get me on their schedule within the next few days. The quality of their work was excellent, they even recommended several things to me to improve the quality of the repair that I would have never thought of. I will definitely contact them again in the future if I have another project! Thank you!

Prompt initial response and very attentive (could not get call backs from several other contractors). Informed us about problems (original construction by the builder was not to code) encountered and proposed cost-effective and structurally sound solutions to remedy the problems. They do not use subcontractors. Worked continuously (except during several heavy rains) until project was complete. Handled all interfaces to city inspectors. All work passed all inspections. Their policy is that final payment is not due until all city inspections are passed AND the work passes the homeowners' inspection. The two guys assigned to our project very personable and talented. Left both work sites picked up at the end of each day. Kept supplies organized and waste piles tidy until ready for pick up. The link to the electronic version of the invoice, which was updated in a timely manner, made it easy to keep track of the expense of the project. All staff from initial contact, to accounting, to the construction workers were very nice to work with and extremely professional.

I was impressed. Very professional, on time, friendly. Cleaned up work area when done. Good email communication. Couldn't ask for more.
