Hire someone else. We wish we had!
I had hoped that a suburban company might be more responsive or reliable, but it proved quite the opposite, and the apparent fact that they were not as suited to city moves became a major liability. First, they were concerned about an arrival time earlier than 9:00 a.m. because they had to drive from their far-north base in Libertyville to Evanston--a concern because the building I moved into has a strict, no-exceptions-ever 8-5 move-in window.
But the problem came when what is ordinarily a 20-minute drive between Evanston and Edgewater was prolonged into more than two hours-- not including their half-hour lunch break, of course, which was anticipated. They could not find a viaduct for the truck to pass through. The route was not previously planned out, and they had to continually re-route themselves all around the city before finding a passable route.
All of this would have been frustrating but not a "deal-breaker," except for the fact that we had a 5:00 p.m. end time: after that, the truck would be sent away and we'd have to start again the next day. My calls to the company during this period when the truck was "MIA" were infuriating, insulting--and in no way appropriate customer service in a situation where the company was so clearly remiss in their business practices (i.e. sending a truck out on the road without a prescribed route in advance). After getting no help from the dispatcher and asking for the manager in charge at Shur-way offices, I was told that the dispatcher was the manager in charge. Clearly, this dispatcher was someone who should not be dealing with customers. Somehow, the fact that the truck could not find passable viaducts became the fault of the city--and of the estimator, whom he said should have made this a "two-day move." From Evanston to the north side of Chicago, and with a 2-bedroom apartment load?
When the truck arrived--with now only three out of the original four scheduled men still on the job--the crew leader came to express at some length his concerns to me rather than simply getting down to the task and managing his team. Trouble with the building elevator was easily resolved (by using another, larger, service elevator), but only after I asked him please to talk with the building team about this rather than me to problem-solve.
5:00 p.m. arrived with about 1/3 of my load still on the truck, and now the move extended into a second day--and another day off work that I unexpectedly had to schedule. And the dispatcher continuing to be rude, unaccommodating, and treating this entire mismanaged job as my problem, not theirs (which I guess it became...)
I should also mention the way in which my possessions were handled. I had numbered each of my boxes, but the crew didn't check off the numbers as they unloaded. It meant that I was signing off on all having been accounted for when, in fact, I had no idea if all was accounted for. In addition, boxes clearly marked "FRAGILE" were stacked under heavy book boxes; they were stacked on their sides even when I had arrows indicating "This Side Up"; and were carried 3 at a time by hand and without dollies, so precariously at times that I saw the men having to ask one another to re-balance their load en route for them. Perhaps it's typical, but damage was also incurred to several pieces of antique furniture, including a rocker, occasional table, and dining room buffet. I probably would have anticipated this with any move, but it just added insult to injury in this case.
When the invoice was given to me after a harrowing one and a half day move, I anticipated the worst, but the original estimate was the final bill of $1835. I paid it, just happy to get this terrible experience with this company over and done with.
I have moved cross-country four previous times....this group of movers was the nicest, most professional, hardworking team I have ever seen! They took great care of my furniture, my boxes, my art...everything. Jeff, our driver, was awesome. The team spent a great deal of time packing the truck....things weren't just tossed in randomly. Everyone seemed to know the best way to load that truck to make sure things were not going to be tossed around and delivered in one piece!
Jeff called along the way, and gave my husband updates regarding arrival. And he was spot on with delivery time. The unloading went as well as the packing.
ShurWay was a great help to us, in the stress of a cross country move. And believe me, I hate moving!!! I would not hesitate to recommend them or use them again. The whole team, including the office personnel, the movers, the driver, the packers, and the salesman, were professional, courteous, polite, pleasant and trustworthy. I really can't say enough great things about this company!
Overall, Shur-Was an excellent provider and I would highly recommend and use them again if we moved. In fact, another family member relocated out of state and based on our experience, also used Shur-Way.
Kudos to John and his awesome team! They were perfectly punctual and very organized, courteous, and careful. I was concerned that a crew of 7 people in our choppy old colonial would be tripping over each other but they were so organized I just couldn't believe how smoothly and quickly it went and how great they were to work with. They wrapped and padded the furniture and were careful with both our 'stuff' and the homes. They disassembled and re-assembled and even tried out a few different arrangements for us at the new house until we were satisfied. Our new home has about 1/2 as many rooms which meant that much of our stuff went into the basement so I imagine their legs were burning by the end of the day yet I never heard one comment. They were a lot of fun and friendly and it made what could be such a stressful day, not. Lastly, they worked so quickly - seriously fast - that they finished over an hour sooner than expected so the cost was actually less than originally quoted and we had time to settle in a bit before the sun went down. Bottom line is that I would recommend these guys in a second!
Oh, and just to show how good they are, the actual cost ended up being a bit less than estimated because the cost was based upon actual time spend and they finished early having worked so quickly,
"Thank you for the kind words, we strive to perform at the best of our ability each and every time. We appreciate the business and happy everything went well."
