I've always been pleased with Robin's work! He responds quickly to phone calls and comes asap if I have an emergency. Last December I had water in my basement. He came immediately, took a look at the problem and knew who to call to solve it. I became acquainted with him thru a neighbor who'd had him build a screen porch and remodel their basement.

I am in shock about the sloppy mess this guy left in my new house. He boasts that he has been in business since 1978, and has other good reviews, but I would swear that this was the first time that he did any of this type of work. His labor costs are very high. The cost listed is for labor only and you don't get what you pay for in this case! Extremely difficult to work with! Would not listen to what I wanted, and insisted that he knew better. BUT...the hardwood flooring wasn't laid straight, his dull saw blade splintered the wood throughout, nails are sticking up through the wood, and there are deep scratches everywhere from him dragging his air compressor across the floor. None of the stone tile is straight or level--some corners stick up so high that I stub my toe, and there are huge open gaps between tiles. Did not finish hanging cabinets, but those he hung vary from being crooked to doors opening wrong way. Hung doors crooked, some opening wrong way. Trim all varies in distance from floor: door trim has huge gaps over hardwood and tile, none of the base trim corners meet, much of the base trim for carpeted areas is so low that carpet can't be installed until trim is raised, and the door trim is so crooked that it looks like a fun house. He tried to use mountains of caulk to hide his mistakes. Repeatedly failed to show-up as promised. Took 2+ weeks off for different vacations that he failed to mention when he took the job. Sent his 19-year old son to work in his absence. Absolutely refuses to fix any of his mistakes--hard to when you can't admit that anything is wrong. Won't even return my door key. I'm busy finding people to correct his mistake$ and finish the work he didn't. This includes painters to cover the greasy fingerprints that he left on every wall that he touched as he snacked his way through the job--leaving a trail of food wrappers along the way. Did I mention the thousand$ in materials that have to be replaced?

UPDATE: The response from Mr. Shelton is inaccurate. It gives an idea of the way that he works. He has a ready (inaccurate)excuse for everything that he does wrong and very poor communication with customers. We urge anyone considering employing him to insist on references for the exact type of work that you need and make sure to check those references (with photos or a visit) thoroughly. He has a very bad reputation. The home was heated and cooled properly during work. He was presented with a list of problems as work progressed and he refused to correct the issues. Complaints about materials are a lie and we did not change our minds. (We had 16' boards--he didn't use them where needed!) In fact, we provided detailed instructions and professional design plans from the start. We strongly suspect that Mr. Shelton is illiterate--he frankly could not follow the instructions. Confirm that he can read before you trust him to follow any plans. We certainly NEVER asked him to do any general contracting work for us. He is not capable of successfully managing a job.

Response from Robin Shelton Home Improvement Company

"Customer and her husband knew my labor costs when I started the job and had no complaints at that time. They were updated regularly on how much they were spending. Sometimes as a contractor I have to tell the client that they can't do somethings the way they want. I do make suggestions for an alternative way, but never insist because it's their house. Customer and her husband were told numerous times that they had to have the furnace running all the time so the hardwood floor would not get ruined. Numerous times I came to find the house temp. at 45 degrees. I was never told of any scratches at any time. Stone tile is not tile. It was a natural stone they insisted be laid without grout. Natural stone varies in size and thickness. I can't do anything about that. Didn't finish hanging the cabinets because I was told not to come back to the job. I don't choose the door swing on the cabinets, the cabinet manufacturer does that. They bought cabinets that were meant for another kitchen and they wanted me to make them work in their house. All trim was hung at standard height above floor. They bought trim that was 8 foot lengths because it was cheaper. I needed 16 foot length and told them that. They did not return it and get what I need to do a more professional job. Painted trim is caulked, that's the way it's done. The 2 weeks off was for a mission trip that they knew about in advance. They even donated money to it. I asked permission for my son to work at their house during the mission trip, they said it was fine. I left a message with Customer's husband saying their door key would be in an envelope taped to my front door. It was there for 2 days and they didn't pick it up. They mess at the job site was not mine. There were many people in this house at the same time I was there. When this job came to me they had already fired at least 2 contractors before me. They were way over budget because of mistakes made prior to me coming on board. They weren't pleased with the job that anyone did before I came. They decided to be the general contractor because they thought they could do that job. They didn't realize all that entails when they decided to do it. They wanted me to do the general contracting, but that's not what I was being paid to do. I had problems with them deciding what they wanted, changing their minds numerous times, and never having the right materials at the job at the time they were needed. I was told to not come back and did not."

The wind had blown the siding off the top of my chimney as well as loosened more siding in several places. I called 3 local providers; one responded with a $285 estimate, one did not respond at all, and Robin responded with an $85 estimate. He repaired the missing piece of siding and tightened the loose pieces at the cost he estimated at. Robin is reasonable, knowledgeable, does what he says he will do for the price he says he will do it for - who could ask for anything more??
