Home Inspector Consultants, Inc.

Everything went smoothly.  We were having the test done for our own knowledge, not sale of the home.  The technician who collected the equipment explained the results and they sent us a thorough report as well.  I see no reason not to recommend them for radon or other inspections.

I had originally posted a great review for this company last year. However, my opinion of them has drastically changed.

My wife and I were purchasing our 1st home and we hired Home Inspector Consultants, Inc. in February 2014 for a home inspection. Since we just had a baby, it was EXTREMELY important to me that the home be tested for mold, therefore, I paid extra to have 2 mold tests performed. Based on the inspection report and the mold tests coming back negative, we purchased the home.

A mere few months later, our basement began flooding due to seepage (which was not caught by Home Inspector Consultants, Inc.). We had another company come in to look at the damage and they performed their own mold test, which indicated that there was quite a bit of mold in the basement. After pulling out the carpet and crown molding, I was SHOCKED to see exactly how much mold was in the basement (I have numerous photographs, if anyone is interested).

I immediately called Home Inspector Consultants and Phil, the Inspector, came over. He basically made an excuse that these were "latent defects" that cannot be seen. I disagreed, since the other company was immediately able to find the mold. Following our conversation, I felt as though the mold tests were not properly done and that my reliance on Home Inspector Consultants was a mistake, since they were not able to perform a simple task that I stressed was extremely important, while another company was.

Fast forward to today, I have spent nearly $10,000 repairing the basement seepage/mold issues (I have receipts to show this). Had the inspection been properly performed, I would not have bought the home, or would have had the seller's pay for the repairs. At a minimum, I thought that Home Inspector Consultants, Inc would stand by their error and offer me a refund - they did not.

Beware of this company!

Phil performed our inspection and we felt he was very thorough and took his time making sure that he inspected everything. He seems very nice and professional. He says he has done over 10,000 home inspections and seems both knowledgable and passionate about his work. He did not try to up sell us on more inspections or testing, but rather seemed to make honest attempts to be most cost effective to us. The house we were looking to buy was a 1920's house and my wife insisted on extra testing (good thing she did)! The extra testing revealed 3 different health concerns that ultimately caused us to decide not to buy the house. The testing that was done was very straight forward, comparing our results to the acceptable standards by law. Phil's Radon testing equiptment is very sophisticated compared to another inspector we considered. Phil's Radon inspection monitors the house for 2 days and can tell if either the monitor or the air in the house has been tampered with. The results were undeniable and a snap shot inspection would not have revealed the true radon danger.
Phil did not try to sway us one way or another about our decision to purchase or not. Instead he provided sound advise on how to address the problems and seemed supportive of what ever decision we made.
Phil's mobile command center is neat, but I personally did not see a benefit to myself. My report was emailed days later. The test results took several days to come back, but I supposed that is standard. The report itself seemed thorough and included many pictures detailing the issue being discussed.
I will use Phil again for my next inspection.
