After having several guys come in and take a look at all the things I wanted to have done I came across Ken from Brite-Lites. Instantly I knew I was going to go with him for the job. He was different on a couple of different levels. First and foremost he was extremely professional. I told him what the end goal was, but I really didn't have a plan on how to get there. I just knew I wanted some lighting in the room as well as some new dedicated circuits and outlets. Ken spent a good amount of time looking at the room, using his experience on where he thought things could be run and where there might be potential problems. As an example there was large support beam running across the room that hung lower then the ceiling to sperate the hall from the main room. Ken let me know that there could be problems there getting power to the other canned lights in the main room. Some of the other guys I had over came across as shoot-from-the-hip types who don't really plan ahead or warn me about potential issues. Ken gave me some possible solutions on how to switch all of the new circuit outlets on at the same time, a really nice to have for a game room. Ken also made some suggestions as far as the type of recessed lighting would look the best in that room. For the initial estimate walk though Ken was at my house for about an hour and half. The other guys were in and out in 10-15 minutes which might be ok for a simple job but I had a extensive list of things that I needed to get done but I didn't have a real idea of how it should be done, or if it was even possible with my layout.
I received a email estimate the same night from him on the work to be performed. Ken also called me to let me know the estimate was sent. Due to budget issues I had him back a few things off the estimate and we agreed on a start date. Halfway into the project I ended up adding additional work to the project and he created a change order to keep track of the revisions.
Ken showed up for the job when he said he would, he was extremely neat, and cleaned up after each day he was over. He would call me down to the work area if he thought he needed approval from me on doing something. This was really nice. I don't like it when someone just assumes it is ok to do something without asking first if it has a direct impact on the the direction of the room or extra cost to me later (cutting holes to run pipe/wire). Due to the logistics of the room there was going to need to be some drywall cuts that needed to be made, he let me know where and how many cuts were needed so there was no surprise when I went down to the room.
On a side note, Ken had to run new pipe from my basement breaker box to the game room, the basement is finished with a movie theater screen and projector. There was drop ceiling down there as well. The drop ceiling was installed by the previous home owner himself and was there was not a lot of room above the drop ceiling. Ken did not break a single piece of drop ceiling even though he warned me there was a good possibility it could happen due to space issues. It's little things like that, that are huge for me.
Before Ken started the job he told me how long it would take and he was right on. Everything about the job was professionally done, If I had to do it again I would go back to Ken in a heartbeat. I really felt comfortable having him in my home. His planning was what really stood out for me. The project became more involved due to the setup of the room and some foundation issues on a wall. He was able to figure out a solution at no extra cost to me.
