Separately, Richard has done great work for me in installing an external kitchen exhaust through our roof (we are on the top floor of an apartment building), in addition to other work. He's always been quick to respond to calls/emails. I've really appreciated his help over the years.
Why I chose YellowSquare as my remodeling contractor
I interviewed about 5 contractors. Of all of them, Richard was the only one that really impressed me. The three things he did that really impressed me during our first meeting were:
1. He brought his tape measure and took measurements of the rooms. This clearly showed that he was interested in the work and wanted to make sure that he was giving me an accurate contract. None of the other contractors even bothered to measure the rooms
2. When I showed him a problem with the bathroom door, he immediately fixed it. Apparently, the issue was a simple hinge bolt that needed to be tightened. I had shown the other contractors too (Richard was the last contractor that I interviewed) and they just nodded and said they will add that work to the contract. Little did I know that it was a quick little fix
3. He sent his detailed contract within 48 hours. I had to chase some of the other contractors before they sent me their estimates. Even then, they sent me such a high-level estimate that it was difficult for me to know what work was included. Richard was very responsive and precise in listing all the work to be done in his very first contract draft
My experience with Richard during the remodeling work
1. He delivered ON TIME!!!! Richard completely finished every single task by the deadline on the contract. I had zero issues with extended dates, etc.
2. He has great taste and experience. Given my busy schedule, i didnt want to be bothered with little details such as choosing the color of the tile grout. I focused on the big things like choosing granite, cabinets, fixtures?he took care of all the other little details. Some other contractors would have been calling me a million times for little things. I trusted his taste and decisions
3. He is honest. I did not have to deal with escalating and hidden costs, etc. He was very honest with all finances. If he bought something, he gave me the receipts. We stayed within budget and any extra expenses were things we pre-agreed on
4. His guys are very courteous and experienced. He had a lead man - Robert - who is great. They were respectful of all the condo rules (and there were many!)
5. Even after the contract was over, he still comes by if I notice something. he does not complain and is more than happy to come fix whatever you are not happy with
6. Lastly, he listens! if you complain about anything, he listens and takes immediate action. I did not like the first job that his painter did and he made sure they kept redoing the painting until I was satisfied. He was merciless:)
Overall, I was very happy and satisfied with his work!Â
Yellow Square's quality of work was top notch! I will say that mistakes happen in all projects and, it was no different with Yellow Square -- although these mistakes were few. Many times, rather than me noticing them, Ryszard would see something he was not happy with and get it addressed before I saw it or said something. In cases, when I had an issues with something working through this problem was straight forward. Ryszard was focused on making sure we were happy and executing the plans we had agreed on. When changes were necessary, we worked through an agreeable fix. When mistakes were made, Ryszard quickly addressed and remedied the issue. This was important because we had a tight timeline to work against and Ryszard was able to keep to the schedule. If the change was due to a change in scope on my part, Ryszard let me know and explained what the change in cost and timing would be for the project. In cannot think of one issue that was not addressed in a straight forward and fashion and that we did not come to an agreeable solution.
Lastly, Ryszard has high integrity and keeps his promises. I found I could depend on Ryszard time and time again in working through tough issues against commitments he had made and keeping us on schedule. He also did a great job in completing our remodel. His team has a high degree of pride in their work and showed great skill in completing a difficult job. I enthusiastically endorse Yellow Square and recommend you consider them for your next remodeling project.
No construction project goes entirely without unforseen issues popping up along the way, and we had a couple minor ones, but Richard took care of them (at no additional cost). When a worker failed to complete a part of the job promptly, Richard replaced him with another worker.
We had a small-to-medium size contracting job and found it difficult to find someone who would a) return our calls, b) get an estimate promptly and c) come in at price, and Yellow Square did all three. If you have a similar-sized job and are tired of contractors giving you the runaround, look no further than here.
1) They left a huge pile of muddy debris on our patio and they were not careful to keep it off the grass (which turned white and nearly died). I had to call 3 times before Kamil finally sent someone to remove the debris (mistake to give Kamil our full payment at the end of the day they did the work but before removing the debris. He had promised to come the next day, but after 3 calls, they did not remove it until at least a week later.
2) Richard accused me of not paying them 2 weeks after I gave the full payment to his partner Kamil (very disorganized, horrible communication... you better get your facts straight before saying something like that).
3) Richard agreed to start the basement waterproofing work on a Friday at 9:00AM, and later confirmed this in an email AND over the phone (probably was not even listening to me and did not even read my whole email... since he appeared to be stretched way too thin at a super busy time). However, his guys showed up at 7AM instead. Since we had not actually moved in yet, we did not even know they were there until I arrived at 9AM sharp. He later accused me of being 2 hours late, and his guys (wrongly so) made us look like idiots by complaining about this in front of our interior designer (a family friend) who arrived early for a 9AM apt with my wife and gave us a piece of her mind for supposedly being 2 hours late, when in reality we were on time but Yellow Square got the time wrong (despite my confirming it 3 times!)
Part II: Basement Remodeling. Richard started out by giving us an outrageously high quote ($9K inclu matl to level the floor and tile the 15' X 17' basement rec room). Then, we changed our scope and managed after a couple weeks to get him to give us a reasonable remodeling quote of roughly $2,200 to insulate, install drywall and prime in the basement rec room. To make a long story short, he kept putting us off for about 2 months until he finally was honest and told me his drywall guys were not interested in the business because they had a big $40K job and didn't care about our business. This was very frustrating since my wife is pregnant and those 2 lost months were crucial to getting the basement ready for our new child.
That being said, Richard did give us some good advice for free that I really appreciated about a couple other projects we initially wanted to include in his scope of work. However, his floor squeak advice was that we would have to replace all our oak floors for Beaucoup Bucks. Later, I ended up fixing All the squeaks myself for $56 with the products from Squeaky Floor.com
Bottom Line: Yellow Square does quality work, but you will likely pay a 30-40% price premium. The basement work was good, but I would not use them again due to their horrible responsiveness and poor communication. As a businessperson, I expect people to promise a date and stick with it, not to "disappear" and drag a project out for months.
Richard arrived on time and surveyed the basement for any more signs of water damage. I explained my time constraints and asked when he would be able to give me an estimate. Richard said right now and pulled out his measuring tape. He gave me a quote on Tuesday and started work Thursday morning at 7am. Around 10am Thursday morning,, Richard called to tell me that they found a problem and wanted to meet at the house as soon as possible. His workers had found a hole under the window that was not sealed as well as weak studs. By the time I arrived to see the problem, Richard was there and had already purchased the necessary materials to fix the situation. So the addition of cementing the hole and adding sister studs did not slow down the project at all. Actually, he finished one day ahead of time. He and his workers were pleasant, did an excellent job, and cleared the basement of debris and sawdust.
We contacted a number of companies for estimates and solutions to our problem. Richard was the one that stuck out... From the first time we contacted him, he was responsive, enthusiastic, and very creative in help to find a solution to this terrible predicament that we were faced with. We eventually settled on Richard's company Yellow Square Co, not necessarily because of price, but primarily because we felt that he would do a great job and also be understanding and accommodating during the rebuilding.
We were absolutely delighted with our decision. Richard's team was very profession. They always arrived on time every morning, and were very courteous and accommodating. They were extra careful to clean up and protect our possessions during the renovation. Most importantly... their work was top-notch... paying special attention to every detail... including matching the color stains of new floors and trimmings to the original. The extra attention to detail really made Yellow Square stand out.
The construction lasted 2 weeks. Yes, it was a big project. Throughout the experience, I constantly remembered Richard assuring me that the quality of the work will be the same as if "this project was for his own home"... and it really was.We had a few unforeseen expenses come up once we stripped the floors and evaluated the damage first hand. But, Richard was very accommodating in making the additional expenses as bearable as possible.
At the end of the day, the interaction with any contractor is a business one. They are there to provide a professional service, and to make a profit in doing so. Richard is one of the few that also adds a level of compassion and understanding in his interactions with his clients. I highly recommend Yellow Square.
Richard was very responsive, coming out to do this work on pretty short notice to accommodate a TV I was having delivered and installed in the bookcase they worked on.
I loved the suggestion to create the built-in bookcase - we live in a townhouse with 2 kids so there's never enough storage. The work took about a week and his crew is always courteous. I do not worry about leaving them alone in the house, or there while my babysitter is home alone with the kids.
Our 5-year old considers him a family friend. In May she asked me "when will Mr. Richard be coming back this summer?" I told her he wasn't but ironically she got her wish to see him again.
Richard walked me through the work that his team would be performing - and then walked me through the completed work to make certain that it appeared as needed. They even made some minor adjustments along the way for no additional charge.
