"Thank you for taking the time to share your experience!"
The work was completed in spring of 2013 and we still LOVE our kitchen today...three years later. Even now, I wouldn't change a thing.
The designer, Terry Tondelli, did a great job and the construction team was also fantastic. They kept the disruption to a minimum and they left the house in great shape when the work was done.
Laura was easy to work with during the design process and had many good ideas for how we could maximize our small first floor. She worked up two complete designs and had patience with us as we went back and forth and sent many questions her way. We were particularly pleased with how well she ended up laying out all the cabinets and incorporating the necessary structural beam into the design. She also guided us through picking all the finishes and I felt she was good at learning what our style was, but also steering us away from choices that might not look good in the end.
Our only hiccup in the design process was with the structural details. The design sketch they sold us on had a flat ceiling, but in reality we needed to have the beam come down below the ceiling. I expected a company with Normandy's vast experience to be able to foresee this kind of large scale issue during the design process. Laura did a good job negotiating between myself and their structural person who I was upset with. In the end it still looks great, but I wasn't happy with having the design change on me due to an existing condition that wasn't hidden. If you are doing work that requires structural changes, I'd suggest pressing them pretty hard with extra questions early on - it didn't seem like their strength.
During the construction phase, Steve was excellent. He was very responsive, to the point, and kept the project on schedule. We had a few inevitable issues come up since we were opening up an old house, but we resolved everything with relatively minor change orders. Without any prompting from me, Steve came up with a solution to put our island counter top in without a joint, despite the column running through the middle of it. The result looks great and just leaving a joint in it would not have looked nearly as good. Most contractors aren't known for caring much about design details, so I was impressed. He was also very conscientious about maintaining as clean a work zone as possible.
Normandy's price is on the high end. We decided to go with them because I was very concerned about the project being finished on schedule, and they have a good reputation in that regard (which they lived up to). I also wanted a designer to help me with all the decisions that had to be made, and we liked Laura from the start. It's hard to find a full service design firm in a lower price range, realistically.
In 2009, we had many problems with our 150-year old Second Empire Victorian house that other builders refused to tackle without massive cost or need for material building code variances. We needed to replace a sagging separate garage, add a bedroom, ideally update our baths and closets to 21st century standards. And I truly wanted to keep all of the old character of the house. Troy, our architect at Normandy did an amazing job. I had a lot of demands but he was always patient and creative in his solutions. In the end, I'd challenge anyone to figure out where our old house (and it's very unique construction techniques and trim details) ends and where the addition begins. We incorporated the garage into the house without making it obvious, added spiral steps, added a master bath and bedroom, modified another bath and laundry, added closets, and modified our mud room and kitchen for the new design. Additionally they dealt with period trim and details (such as push button light switches, Victorian hinges, specific doors ) that I wanted replicated throughout the house.
Chris Beck and his team were the other reason this all worked out well. It was a very invasive remodel, which can get emotional, but they were always understanding and professional. We did run into a few snags -- mostly due to the age of the house and prior remodeling problems that weren't obvious on the surface, but Chris always kept things going. They had an excellent team of artisans that dealt with custom mouldings, unusual roofing, copper work customization, stucco, etc. We have gotten so many compliments on the house, I've stopped counting. And when we've had a few follow-up issues, they've always been prompt and addressed them without complaint or hassle.
Yes, they can be more expensive than the competition, but if it's something you want done correctly, it is definitely worth the extra cost.
