Brian Sugarman of Macnician was recommended by a consultant I'd used when I had my PC (Loewy Consulting) as somebody that would come to my home for an hourly rate to help with my computer - i.e., a "geek for hire".
I contacted Brian on Tuesday and let him know what I wanted. Since my questions had a lot to do with my huge number of photos (photography is my hobby), he suggested that I work with Chris Tooley, who is not only a Mac expert, but is also seriously interestedin photography. I was able to schedule a visit to my house that week, on Friday.
Chris was very easy to work with, and patiently listened to my explanations about problems, and understood them (not easy to do), and then very calmly explained why things weren't working and what could be done. I found that, if I'd contacted somebody like him in the first place, I would have realized that the Time Capsule is really meant only for backup (restoring info after a crash), rather than as an archive (a place to store and retrieve photos). At my request, he provided me with info on the external hard drives he is using, and what his process is for insuring there are always duplicates of his photos, preferably stored in different places. It appears to be a good, simple and easy-to-do process, which I plan to use, and have asked him to return this Friday, after I have the drives, to go through it with me. Chris also helped me with other various things I had questions about.
The cost at the time for a home visit was $100/hour, billed in quarter hours, but is now increasing to $120 or $125/hour. I believe that it's cheaper ($75/hr at that time) if this takes place at the Macnian office, which I believe is by Ravinia. For me, this was money well-spent, since it was necessary to meet in my home to troubleshoot the computer/Time Capsule connection, and because I needed more than I could get in a 15 minute visit to the Genius bar at the Apple Store. I was impressed with Chris's expertise and his ability to quickly determine the level of experience of a client and adjust his explanations to that level.
