Excellent as usual. I have had North Shore coming to check up on my furnaces and air conditioners for over 5 yrs. I get the same tech every time. They know what I have. Always come on time. Prepared. Take me through what they are doing and seeing. What I like the most is they are concerned about safety when it comes to the gas, carbon monoxide, etc. I trust them and the pricing is fair. You get what you pay for and then some from North Shore.

Showed up within appointment window and was knowledgeable and professional. Recommended one small part replacement on boiler and replacement of filter (which we will do) on forced air unit.

The worlds worst business transaction.....ever.........you have been forewarned. The above freon lasted less than a month. We even let him give us a quote on a new A/C. He quoted us at $4100, but would not break anything done, saying everything is proprietary. He even said he would roll the $640 cash we paid him into this cost, but yet couldn't show us anything itemized. Needless to say I had a new A/C installed by someone else who was honest with me in 48 hours. After several attempts to get some of our lost $ back, the owner, Mike agreed to give us $300 back. Even getting to this point was painful. He brought up personal issues about his expenses of his kid at Depaul, his mother being sick in Vegas, and his neighbor who drives a cab and can get financial aid. What business owner brings up personal issues and matters? His biggest concern was my wife and I writing him a not so good review on the work provided. He even requested to see the billing for the A/C we did end up buying. After several attempts to collect, the owner has blocked my number and also my wife's number from calling there anymore. I was certainly not nice in going back and forth with him and i felt like he was making excuses and wasting our valuable time. I was able to block my number and get through, the owner mumbled a couple of things and said "i'm not giving you your money and hung up. I did call back and say i was going to come and discuss face to face if my calls weren't being taken......hardly threatening. So here I am writing the review that is so deserved, you can have my $, your awful karma is warranted. I have never heard an adult whine more in my life. Plenty of other options for heating and cooling that will be transparent about pricing.

"We are sorry that you were not satisfied with the service you received from North Shore Heating and Cooling. However, no matter how hard we try, and we do try, we can't always please everyone. When you elect to repair aged equipment versus replacing it, you are taking a chance. Sometimes you can buy yourself more time and sometimes not. But then again, you decided to take the chance. Our service technician provided you with all the facts, made recommendations and left the decision up to you, the customer. We offered many options, during service and after, none of which were totally acceptable to both parties. Again, we regret that the service was not to your expectations."

We didn't like the last experience we had, He did two things for us he maintain the air conditioner and that he did fine so the price was just the issue and then we had a dehumidifier installed or rather a humidifier installed and then I don't think it's done correctly he came back and I still think there is an issue with it and I just haven't called him back to have it installed correctly. I would say it was too expensive.
Response from North Shore Heating & Cooling
"Always shooting for an A - Sorry to hear that you found our service average. I checked our records and found that we did service both (2) of your air conditioners. Both units were leaking and low on refrigerant, R22 Freon. Which is no longer being used in production or being produced, which like anything else, causes it to become quite expensive. We also installed, upon your approval, a stop leak agent to the second floor unit, (having needed the most refrigerant) to try to reduce the need to purchase additional refrigerant and or service in the near future. You also requested that we install a humidifier. We installed the unit and confirmed that it was installed correctly."

I was not home, but they did stick us for a bill on the complimentary service.
Response from North Shore Heating & Cooling
"Hi [member name removed] The Carrier HEPA filter is not included in the service contract or Carriers 10 Year warranty on parts. ACTUAL COST $ 61.00 The complimentary Preferred Service Agreement includes the air-conditioner and furnace maintenance in accordance with the manufactures recommendations to ensure that your HVAC system does not have defects that would cause a major problem or untimely breakdown our service technicians are factory trained to spot these problems. Your furnace filter should be replaced every 4 to 6 months to prevent damage to the furnace motor, air-conditioner and heat exchanger. On 7-12-13 your filter was 10 months old and is a critical component to prevent damage to your heating and cooling system. It needs to be replaced before it damages your furnace or air-conditioner. We acted responsibly and correctly in time to prevent this."

Our upstairs furnace stopped working, I called Northshore Heating and Cooling because they had done some work on both furnaces about 6 years ago and was satisfied with the service.  Times have certainly changed.  When I first made the appointment they gave me a four hour window.   After about 3 and half hours I called the company and no one answered the phone, I left a message telling them that unless he showed up in the next half hour I would have to cancel, because I had an appointment to go to about an hour after the alloted window.  They never gave him the message he showed up about an hour and a half after the 4 hour window.  I should have looked elsewhere at that point, but rebooked for the next day.  This time he did show up promptly.  He worked on it for about an hour and said I would need a new circuit board which would cost $900 or I could replace the furnace and he went into his sales talk and even had the Carrier pamphlet handy.  The furnace was about 14 years old and so I didn't want to spend over a $1000 dollars for new circuit board and have the furnace need to be replaced 2 or 3 years down the road.  I opted for the new furnace, which he said could be replaced in a day.   Before he left he asked if I wanted the downstairs furnace tuned up and checked and thought it made sense since it had been a while since it had been serviced.  He tuned it up and indicated everything checked out fine (more about this later).
The next day the owner comes out and checks out the furnace to be replaced and says it will be a two day job.  At this point the company has had two people take it apart and inspect it and the airconditioning unit that sits above it.  The following week they come back with the new furnace (its been over a week without heat on the second floor).  Second day into the job after they have removed and disposed of the old furnace the service technician leaves us a cryptic message that he has encountered a problem and we need to call the office in the morning.  The next morning, I call and the owner tells me the found a cracked coil in the air conditioning unit and it would cost and additional $800 to replace it and it needs to be replaced in order to install the new furnace and by the way I should replace the outside condenser for another $3000.  I said no to that, but I did ask him why in the 2 inspections neither of them noticed the cracked coil and only noticed it when the had removed and disposed of the furnace.  He didnt have a really good answer, but I felt I had no choice at this point.  So far it seems to being working fine but it cost me $5050.
Now to my other problem.  The downstairs furnace that the technician checked out and tuned up less than two months ago has stopped working tonight.
I would never hire this firm again.

Response from North Shore Heating & Cooling
"Since we have been servicing your equipment since 2004 we are sorry that you were not completly satisfied with the service you received. I apologize for any inconveniece we may have caused by being late. Sometimes a techinican will run into to some lengthy repairs on a prior call and can't help but to run late. We do our best to keep on time. In response to your complaint regarding your decision to replace your furnace do to the age of the unit and the cost of the repair. We arrived at your house 10/29/12 to address a complaint of no heat on a second floor furnace. As you stated the service technician diagnosed the problem as the circuit board needing to be replaced. I would like to take this time to state that he was not called out to check for an air conditioning problem. The evaporator coil that you were told was cracked is part of your air conditioning system. This evaportor coil is sealed in a coil plenum (box) on five sides sitting on top of the furnace. The sixth side of the opening is obstructed by the furnace itself. You cannot see the coil unless you remove the furnace and or the surrounding plenum (box). Upon removing the old furnace to install your new unit our techinician, doing his job, notified you that you had a crack in the evaporator coil. He stopped installing the new furnace. You were not home so he contacted you and left you a message as to what he had found. Our technician did his job. Installing the unit knowing their was a crack in the evaporator coil would have been irresponsible of him and would have cost you a lot more money to find at a later date. Possibly tearing out your new unit or disassembling the plenum costing you hours of unneccessary labor and or searching for a refrigerant leak. Replacing the evaporator coil at this time was the mose cost effective and responsible course of act to reccomend. When you decided on the type of furnace you would like to have installed, you choose a top of the line 96 % efficient furnace. This is a high end furnace. One of the best Carrier makes. Explantion of the higher cost. You were quoted all charges prior to any work being done. There were no hidden cost. The damage to your unit was found during a honest and responsible service process. There were no high pressure sales tactics. You were given options are all times. The installation of the furnace and coil were done correctly the first time. We made you aware of an existing problem and given recommendations to correct it. We also serviced your downstairs furnace and did not find any issues. Your furnace failed two months later. After running daily in the cold of the winter months. A part can fail at any given time. We do our best to inspect all parts but it is beyond our capabilities to predict the failure of all functioning parts after two months."

They do a very nice job. Everything went well, except for the fact that I found the same filters for $30 while they were charging $75 on them. They are very knowledgeable and know what they are doing. They are very clean and professional, and are in and out.
Response from North Shore Heating & Cooling
"Thank you for your positive comments. Our part prices are flat rate prices. Part and labor included. No extra time and labor charges. We carry only manufacturerer recommeded replacement filters. They are of a higher quality and are made especially for your unit. Not off brand filters that may not allow the recommended air flow for your system to run properly."

They were excellent. They did not do any extra duct work. It was not a simple job. Our house has had 5 additions so things weren?t as they expected it to be. I have a furnace in the bedroom in the 2nd floor. The whole thing was a little unusual. It took longer than I expected but that was because if they ran into a problem they called the top dog in to make sure it was done right. I heard a fan cover on the roof which I shouldn?t have heard so I called them. They came back out and fixed that. They came out 2-3 times after the work was done.

Their service person arrived on time and worked efficiently, getting everything done (including 15 minutes preparing the invoice) in less than two hours. They don't work on a time and materials basis, but only by the "job." Prices for furnace, humidifier and water heater were high but as advertised. Where they really socked it to me was on parts: $72 each for the filters, $38 each for the water pads, $56 for a thermocouple and $59 to replace a humidifier drain; $544 is much too high a charge for two hours of work plus perhaps $100 in parts at the vendor's cost. I had used them once before because they were available to perform emergency service when my regular furnace servicer wouldn't take the call because I hadn't signed up for their service plan. I was grateful that they made time for a new customer and gave me a first-thing-in-the morning service call. However, they have gotten greedy and I won't be considering them when I get bids to replace my heating system and hot water heater next year.
Response from North Shore Heating & Cooling
"Thank you for you positive comments. We are glad to hear that you were satisfied with the service provided by our company. However I would like to address your concerns regarding the charges. All of our parts are quoted to the customer, just as in your case, for approval before installation. Our part pricing is on a flat rate basis - labor and parts included - no additional charges - no additional time - you pay the fee quoted. Our trucks are fully stocked and our technicians fully trained and and our company maintains full licensing and insurance. We have a brick and mortar location - and in business for over 25 years. You get a fully backed company servicing your equipment. Your total invoice was $544.00 Which included the following: Full maintenance/safety check and cleaning of your furnace. Maintenance and cleaning of two humidifiers, maintenance/safety check of one water heater, replacment of thermocouple on water heater, replacment of two furnace filters (manufacturer oem replacements- no generics) two humidifiers water panels (manufacturer oem replacements - no generics) and a complete replacement of piping for the humidifier drain. All of which were quoted and approved by yourself before any work began. All of our repairs are covered by a ninety day labor warranty and one year parts warranty. It is not our intent to "piggy price" or "blow off" exsting customers. We base our prices on our cost of doing business (license, training, insurance etc.) which is the way all responsible businesses should operate."
