We used Tommy Pollina Landscape Company to repair standing water issues along the side of the house. They came out multiple times to walk through options with me and my husband and were able to complete the work in one day. So far the side yard has handled significant rains without any flooding and we look forward to working with them again to address additional drainage issues in our backyard.

They did not use the correct equipment, damaged our porch and walkway while taking out the existing columns, took months to come back to repair our porch (which could not be used all summer), wound up changing the job verbally to put in a couple of bushes instead of building new columns - damaged one of our bushes which they moved -- the owner assured me they would likely owe us when it was all said and done - but then they turned around and billed us for fixing the damage they caused without our authorization. They have been unresponsive and unprofessional in resolving this -- they ultimately billed us $1K over their initial estimate and never built anything at our home - instead our porch is still damaged/bricks loose and one of the bushes they moved died in the process and now has to be removed and replaced -- and they are saying they will come back and remove the bushes they installed even though they billed us for all of it. The owner did not return any calls after the work was done - he hides behind the office - and the office defers to the owner. The office manager finally sent me a written settlement agreement to resolve this last week -- agreed to credit me for the labor they billed us -- but then immediately turned around and refused to pay it unless we agree that they can come back and take out the bushes they installed. I am going to be suing them at this point. They need to have the lowest/warning rating on this site so they cannot do this to other people.

They do a nice job. There's a crew that comes every Thursday and they cut the grass, they do all the trimming and do apply fertilizers. They are very thorough. We've been using them for four or five years. They come when they are supposed to.

Initial consultation went very well and they gave us a reasonable quote quickly. We signed the contract and placed a deposit of $1500 down. The permits were granted by the city. That is the last we ever heard from this company. Every time we called it was "you're on the list for next week". Next week came and went several times and we were always told the same thing. There were weather issues (it was rainy and I understand that can delay things), but we started this process in April and by June, there was still nothing done in our yard (drainage or spring clean up). No one ever called to tell us when they would be coming out, we had to call every time. Called one last time to cancel everything and suddenly they could have people out on the following Monday. We proceeded to cancel all services and get a refund of our deposit.

They did a fantastic job - I couldn't be happier with the final result! They showed up when they said they would, and got the job done in a professional and timely manner. Joe Pollina is terrific -- he kept in close contact the entire time and even texted me pictures of the progress while I was at work! Their price was competitive -- they were not the cheapest bid I got but they gave me the confidence that they would get the job done right.

While it took almost 2 months to get scheduled and on the books (lots of weather issues) and they ultimately showed up unannounced (the regular person I was working with had gone on vacation and had otherwise been extremely attentive), they did do a good job and the yard looked great! I would have liked the installers to give me a little more info on next steps as they just kind of took off after they were done without a word, but the company emailed me instructions as soon as I asked. I would say overall there were a few things they could improve on, but they did a great job overall and were very very pleasant to work with - plus the best price in town!

Permits were not pulled properly and we were cited by the village after water was pooling up on the sidewalk as a result of the diversion that was created. The swale did nothing to mobilize the water. The drains were not placed properly-water was pooling around them. Spending $2400 did not solve the problem at all.

"When we were contacted by Angie’s List about [Member name removed] complaint it was the first we had heard of this issue. When the job was completed, [Member name removed] personally signed off on the job and paid in full. Had he contacted us, we would have worked with him regarding the citation and any problems that he thinks resulted from the work we completed in the spring of 2013. The contract clearly states that all work comes with a one year warranty. Over the past few years, Park Ridge has changed what type of work requires a permit – adding things that previously did not require permits, at the time we did the work, a permit was not required. We are a registered and insured contractor with the village, and routinely secure permits for the work we do. When we were contacted about the drainage problem,[Member name removed] had standing water in the back yard, even during dry periods when it has not rained. To help alleviate the situation, we regarded the yard to drain towards the street, per village requirements. The grading worked, except for the fact that the sump pump discharged into the yard nearly continuously, so that even on a dry day, the yard was so wet that [Member name removed] children could not play in the yard. After our work was complete, [Member name removed] had the sump pump attached to the storm sewer to get water out of the back yard."

We would highly recommend them. I think that they do a great job for the price they charge. They are prompt and attentive. If you call and request for other services, they are very good at getting back to you and so they've done several things for us. We've had other landscapers that were more expensive and the work was no where near. Their timing was poor as well. We will use their services again in the future.

"We really appreciate such a positive review from a long-time, valued customer. It is our goal to continue to meet or exceed these expectations each year, improving service. Thank you for your business and loyalty!"

Went very well, good design and execution, only slight problem was in communication. Hard to reach at times, and delays in message delivery. But worth it for the beautiful results!

They came over to the house last week. We are away in the summers and the lawn needs mowing. When I come back, it all looks very nice. I am pleased with their work. I get premium service that includes everything. I have a contract with them.

They gave me an estimate over the phone and stuck to the price. I was contemplating renting the equipment and doing this myself, but I am glad I went with them. Price was right. They showed up when they said they would and did a great job. Will consider using them for larger landscape work in the future.

$3,355
The entire process from start to finish was a huge disappointment. After the deposit of $3,355.20 was given I was told work would begin in 30 days. They didn't start until 2 months later. When I called a couple of times to ask why it was taking so long they wouldn't even take my call or would have the receptionist ask what my call was regarding. What my call is regarding? My landscaping. I had given Kellie (very inexperienced) at Tommy Pollina specific requests as to what plants and flowers I wanted. When the work began almost everything I was told I was getting was substituted for other plants and flowers. They then told me to wait a month and that it would grow on me. I still don't like it, but all they care about this getting the rest of their money. They are calling and stopping by my house unannounced asking for over $3,500 more for their substandard work which looks like a high school kid did for pocket money. UPDATE: One of the owners of this dubious company harassed me in front of my home, shouting at me from the sidewalk, attempting to slander me in front of my neighbors and workers I had at my home (he creepily made sure he didn't sept foot on my property, since that would be illegal since I told him to get lost). I have witnesses and they all though he was unhinged. He has at least TWICE (that I know of) stalked me at my residence. One day he sat for hours on my front stoop and the other time he parked his car in front of my home and refused to leave until I called 911. I filed a report with the police department and have installed security cameras due to this person's intimidation tactics. To add insult to injury, after over two years since he worked on my yard, 50% of his plants and flowers have withered and died due to inappropriate plant selections. As I've said before, do not do business with this company any under circumstances.
Response from Tommy Pollina Landscape Co Inc
"We at Tommy Pollina are very disappointed in the member's allegations. We had a contract with him, the work was completed and the member refused to pay for the services rendered and plants installed. Joe and Kellee made repeated calls to him not only about the open balance, but asking if they could work towards a solution that would satisfy him. He did not return calls, and on January 19, 2009, he hung up Kellee when she did have a chance to speak with him. This reinforces his unwillingness to work with us to a mutually agreeable solution. In 27 years of business, we have never lost 50% of the plant material we installed on a job. If he has truly lost half of his plants after two years, this is most likely due to inadequate customer care rather than inappropriate plant selection. If a new plant is going to die due to a problem with the plant or inappropriate siting, it is typically within the first season. In addition to this, we guarantee all of our plant material for one year – if he had paid his balances, all of his plants would have been covered and replaced. He claims that Kellee is “very inexperienced” yet she holds a degree in horticulture from the University of Montana and had several years of experience at the time she worked with him. We only hire qualified, experienced staff members. If our customer service and product quality was as bad as this member claims, Mr. Pollina would not have been able to sustain his business for almost 30 years, maintaining a client base from his earliest days in business and steadily adding to it over time."
