RENAISSANCE FURNITURE RSTRTN

Over a two year period, I designed and built an Arts and Crafts dining table. I called several finishers and Jose at Renaissance Furniture Restoration was one of the few that was willing to come to my home to see the piece before providing an estimate. Jose was very detail-oriented, noticed some areas that needed touch-ups that I was not aware of and provided me with a verbal quote. Jose's quote was extremely low. His quote of $400 was much lower than the other two quotes that I had received which ranged between $1,700 and $2,200. Given his attention to detail and his interest in the project, I awarded him the contract. Unfortunately, Jose's execution did not match the standard he had set during the "sales" process. Jose failed to appear for the first appointment and failed to call either before or after the fact. When we were able to reschedule, Jose, once again, neither appeared nor phoned. When we were eventually able to meet, I asked Jose if he had any kind of contract or paperwork that we could sign that would outline our shared understanding of the scope of the project. During the meeting for the estimate, Jose had stated that he would ensure an even color, an even finish and that he would guarantee my satisfaction. Jose had no such paperwork but suggested that if I wanted to, I could create a contract. When I produced a contract outlining the terms we had agreed upon, Jose became agitated and stated that he was uncomfortable with writing down the terms of the agreement. I do not know about the quality of Jose's work but I am disappointed with his professionalism. If find it highly suspect that someone would not be willing to document the promises that they have made if only to ensure that both parties are on the same page and have the same understanding of the project.
