We first worked with Nancy and John over ten years ago when they provided the full range of design, drawing, permitting and construction management services for a major $400,000 kitchen, master bath/bedroom and back half of the house renovation. Their work was exceptional, from designing a new floor plan which maximized our space utilization given city code limitations, to riding herd on an extensive cabinetry contract and a general construction contract. At the end of the day the design and execution was nearly flawless and where issues arose with the general contractor they hung with us, even months after the project was completed. This year, we called on S2 to help us think through the remodeling of the last two original rooms in the house, a second bath and bedroom. We agreed to a simply pay for time invested fee arrangement, and again they were great, offering design ideas, drawings where necessary as well as offering suggestions for specialists: cabinets; tile; shower glass etc. Although a miscommunication with the cabinet maker, as to who they should be taking directions/measurement from, resulted in a more strained relationship than in the past, Nancy went out of her way to make sure that we felt that we were treated fairly, even though S2 had to absorb some of the cost out of their own pocket. While we appreciated the gesture, I’m afraid it left a bad taste in their mouth. Fortunately, the house is now done, for if I were to have to find another architectural firm, I’m afraid I’d be hard pressed to find another as creative and as diligent as S2.

Nancy Schlosberg arrived 10 minutes early for our appointment and caught us not quite ready for her. She walked through the house and really did not initiate many ideas. We suggested a stair lift and an elevator and she was pretty luke warm to those ideas. I was disappointed in her lack of initiative and enthusiasm. She sounded far more knowledgeable on the phone. She followed up with an e-mail saying that she did not know any stair lift vendors, but we could research them ourselves...and to please let her know if she could be of further help. This was not what I was expecting from the rave reviews I read on Angie's List about S2A. We have decided to go with another firm who walked the house and looked carefully to see about space for a real elevator, as well as a chair lift.
Description of Work: We wanted an assessment of our house vis a vis changes we might need to make in order to continue living here well into old age.

Response from S2 Architects
In response to the Member's report, I would like to add the following: When I initially talked to the Member on the telephone, she discussed adding a bath on the first floor to allow she and her husband to "age in place" - there wasn't any mention of an elevator or chair lift. When I arrived for the promotional meeting (which I admit, I was early for), the purpose of the meeting had changed, and adding the bath was no longer an option. I was asked to walk through the house and assess those areas that might pose a problem with aging. Overall, other than the stairs, and the bath tub access in the Master Bath, I didn't see any areas that would prevent the Members from living in this house from an accessibility perspective. Once the vertical living became the primary focus, I did not feel comfortable about offering design solutions during an initial promotional meeting. The structural implications of adding an elevator into an existing house are not insignificant, and there seemed to be a predetermined interest in the chair lift as the desired option. Not having any direct experience with chair lifts, I couldn't offer any more information to the discussion than what the the Members had already determined. The other rebuttal that I would like to add is that we do not consider promotional meetings to be a time when a client gets free design ideas from us. We are assuming that potential clients are meeting with several architects, and that these are more of a initial contact to see whether there is compatibility to style and priorities and whether our fees for services are in line with what they would like to pay. We are happy to do a walk through of a house and offer our opinion as to whether something is feasible or not, but as mentioned earlier, we typically don't design on the spot, and prefer to study the options after taking measurements to make sure that what we are proposing will work.

We really enjoyed working with S2 Architects, and found both Nancy and John to be very responsive and full of great ideas for transforming our outdoor space. My husband and I felt that the plans as designed by S2 really fit the way we live. The particulars: Our existing deck is enormous, impractical, and falling apart. We wanted a structure that would provide a transition from the house to the yard, rather than a spot to perch above the yard. Nancy and John gave us three options to choose from. Once we decided on a design, they walked us through the options for materials, providing pros and cons for several choices. We were particularly impressed with the level of detail in the plans, including gorgeous railings and storage space underneath the deck. The plans reconfigured our space into a classic-looking, appropriately-scaled area that would lead down to the terrace. The terrace was designed to be the real living space of the yard. It added gentle curves to our rectangular plot, and a connecting walkway helped transition from the back gate to the rest of the yard. The storage shed was what really sold us on S2 Architect's plan. We have no garage and no alley, and did not want to build a detached garage because that would have meant having a driveway break up the yard. We decided that a shed for storing our bikes and a lawnmower would meet our needs. The shed that Nancy and John designed echoes the steep pitch of our roof, and includes great details like herringbone millwork on the two sets of double doors. Throughout the process, Nancy and John were great with answering all our questions. They were very flexible when it came to tinkering with the plans, and they worked in tandem with our landscaper to make sure that everything would come out just right. Their experience and thoughtfulness were huge assets. We are very much looking forward to completing this project!
Description of Work: Nancy and John designed a new deck, a stone terrace, and a storage shed for our back yard. They gave us three initial designs to choose from, then took the one we picked all the way to construction drawings. Nancy and John worked with us through the bidding process. We eventually opted to postpone the work for a year due to unforeseen circumstances in our family, but we look forward to picking up where we left off next spring.

They were tremendous to work with. Their pricing was fair. They were responsive and timely for the obstacles that came up. Best of all, the plans they designed passed through the zoning and building permit stage without any major problems or delays.
Description of Work: S2 Architects designed a second story addition for my home in Evanston.
