For the first 15 years we lived in our house, we did our own landscaping. Picked the plants and installed them ourselves. A few hits, but mostly misses. We were clueless as to what plants would work best in Chicago?s difficult climate.
In 2010, we finally gave up on the DIY approach and hired a professional landscaper to re-do our front yard. I?m sorry to say that this landscaper didn?t do much better than we did. Within a year or two, half the shrubs died; the other half struggled.
In 2013, we hired Pat Bernard Design for the first time. What a difference! Unlike our previous landscaper, Pat spent a lot of time studying our outdoor areas, taking note of the sun and wind conditions. Mindful of our limited budget, she proposed a landscaping plan that was totally different from what we had, but totally appropriate in terms of light and soil requirements, heat and wind tolerance, and our ability to maintain the plants on an ongoing basis. Pat listened to us and incorporated our preferences where they made sense, and explained why she chose the plants she did. The installation was flawless. The result? Our landscaping is the nicest on the block. Heck, it?s the nicest in the whole neighborhood!
We would hire Pat Bernard Design again in a heartbeat. She?s exactly what you want in a landscaper: smart and organized and extremely professional, but with the vision and passion of an artist.

Pat was responsive and helpful from day 1.  She takes the time to make sure we do things right, keeping in mind how the changes we made would impact my neighbors.  The guys Pat used were awesome.  They worked fast and did a tremendous job and left the place in better shape then when they arrived.  The end result is that I now have a new beautiful backyard that is not only functional (room for kids to play, council ring for fire-pit), but also easier to mow.

Pat is also offering me advice on other DIY projects that I am taking on around my yard.  She has been a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend her services.

Pat Bernard is a terrific landscape designer. She is very knowledgeable, reliable and committed to finding solutions to problems which in our case, was a water drainage problem. I would recommend her.

I told Pat upfront that I didn't know what I wanted done in my front yard, but simply that it had to be overhauled.  She provided suggestions at every step of the process, from the shape of bed line, to the location of every plant, and even how to care for it all.  She was very receptive to my feedback on which ideas I liked or disliked.  My budget was small, and she absolutely kept me to it.  I'm thrilled with my new front yard, and have received numerous compliments.  I highly recommend Pat!

We used her in 2010 and 2011. She is a landscape designer and we are using her in stages. We have been very happy. The great thing about her is that she puts out a plan but she is willing to listen to feedback and work with us on changes that we would like to make. She usually comes back with specific reasons on why she has chosen certain things. She has been very helpful to make decisions quick and easy. She has been very good. She doesn't vary from her quotes so we know what we are going to pay. The quality of her work is fantastic. Her professionalism is fantastic and she comes across very well. She is going to be doing more work in 2012.

Everyone in the family and our neighborhood is enjoying it. Her design is elegant, but also low maintenance. Her follow up and and follow through is incredible.
