Expensive, but he offers a 20% discount for seniors. He didn't realize I was a senior during visit and billed me at his normal rates. Phoned him up the next day and he promised to refund the amount of the discount. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised when he rang my doorbell today and handed me a hundred bucks, which is approximately correct. I give him credit for honesty.
Since he was there I also asked him to clean out a slow drain in a bathtub, which he did at no charge (blow out). I also asked him about a slow kitchen faucet and he recommended replacing it. He went to the hardware store to purchase a faucet for me and installed it. The total cost included the price of the new faucet and supplies to install it.
My only concern is that he did not replace the cover over the bathtub overflow hole and left some putty for me to clean up. I'd still hire him again.
We originally thought the issue was the bathtub, but it seemed well-sealed. On a lark he decided to look at the toilet, and lo and behold that was the problem. The toilet connector seal had rotted clean through (it's the only one in the house that hadn't bee replaced recently), and the flange in the floor has cracked.
Bob put in a new seal, and put braces on the flange. (Replacing it would have required ripping out the whole floor.) There was a lot of water spillage due to the rotted seal, but Bob took the time to clean it up nicely. Since then there's been no issue with the toilet or leakage.
He did not do anything to help address the existing water damage. I don't know if that's a service he offers, but I ended up doing that myself later. That entailed removing the light, draining it (it had standing water in it, not good), letting it air dry for a week or two, and then sanding down the ceiling before reattaching the light. I've had no problems since then.
Note that Bob does not take credit card, so be sure to have a checkbook handy. I didn't (my bank doesn't believe in them), so I had to send him an e-check online instead. Fortunately he was quite cooperative and didn't make a fuss about it.
This was NOT in Indiana you goof! We lived in Evanston, IL at the time- right around the corner from you and your dog. I think his name was Orero.
"I have been in business 41 years and I do about 1000 jobs every year. I have never worked in Indiana."
"THE AMOUNT CHARGED FOR THE JOB WAS INCORRECTLY ENTERED BY THE MEMBER. THE AMOUNT WAS NOT $8500. IT WAS ACTUALLY $850. ANOTHER PLUMBER HAD QUOTED $1250 FOR THE SAME JOB."
"THIS JOB STARTED OUT AS A SIMPLE ROUTINE JOB THAT I DO AT LEAST ONCE WEEK. HOWEVER, THE HOME IS A FAIRLY NEW HOME. EVIDENTLY THE PLUMBER WHO DID THE ORIGINAL PLUMBING ON THE HOME DID A SLOPPY JOB INSTALLING THE TOILET CLOSET COLLAR UNDERNEATH THE TOILET. HE LEFT THE CLOSET COLLAR BROKEN ON ONE SIDE, WHICH MEANT THE TOILET WAS ANCHORED ON ONLY ONE SIDE. IF LEFT UNCORRECTED THE TOILET WILL SHIFT AND POSSIBLY BREAK. WHEN IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE JOB WAS REQUIRING ME TO OPEN THE FLOOR I ADVISED THE MEMBER OF THE ADDED TIME AND EXPENSE. AFTER THE THREE HOUR JOB WAS COMPLETED THE MEMBER CALLED HER HUSBAND. HE WENT BALLISTIC OVER THE PRICE. I OFFERED AND DID REDUCE THE COST BY $100 TO BE COMPLETELY FAIR. HE BECAME IRATE. HE THREATENED ACTION AGAINST ME IF I CHARGED MORE THAN $150. HONESTLY, THREE HOURS OF HARD WORK OPENING THE FLOOR PLUS MATERIAL JUST HAS TO COST MORE THAN $150. I HAVE A VERY FINE REPUTATION WITH HUNDREDS OF NICE CUSTOMERS AND I WASN'T GOING TO BE BLACKMAILED BY HIS THREATS. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME WORKING FOR HIM. THE FIRST TIME I HAD REPAIRED FROZEN PIPES AND HE FORCED ME TO SETTLE FOR A SUBSTANTIAL LABOR CUT THEN TOO. HE IS NOT THE KIND OF CUSTOMER I'M LOOKING FOR."
