A M Clocks is an Illinois corporation located in the Elk Grove industrial area near the Chicago O'hare airport. Please note our new address as of 3/1/07. We are now servicing the north side of Chicago plus as always the north and northwest and west suburbs for all your grandfather clock needs. Give us a call to set up an appointment at (847) 439-3636. We are a howard miller dealer and also one of their authorized repair centers for the chicago area. We have been working with howard miller for over 14 years now. August milz, the president of the firm grew up in the black forest of germany and learned his clock trade in a cuckoo clock factory and after finishing his apprenticeship he worked in his father's cuckoo clock factory. In 1957 after becoming a master clock maker he came to the usa and opened several clock repair shops. Operating a well established clock repair shop, repairing all kinds of clocks and knowing the black forest clock industry as well as we do, it comes as a natural, that in cooperation with two of the well known and old clock factories we now can offer the whole line of black forest clocks on the internet direct to the consumer at wholesale prices. Wonderful. I called and Donna was able to come out same day to look at our Grandfather clock which hadn't worked since our move. She was very knowledgeable and cared very much about the piece. As she predicted, the weights were placed incorrectly. She also repaired a weight I had dropped. Since she was making a house-call, I asked her to clean the piece as well. Cost 165.00. She took 2 other cuckoo clocks with her to the shop: 1 needed new hands and the other had a locked chain - I requested both to be cleaned. Each were 90.00 per item. I thought these prices were quite reasonable. Extensive work was not needed/no special parts and I was able to pick up both clocks 02.01.2021. I also purchased a small battery operated cuckoo - looking clock for kitchen for 36.00.

The clock was ready on time and beautifully restored. The price was reasonable for the work done. The shop did a written appraisal and gave me exact instructions on how to set the clock and pack it for shipping.

In July 2015, I purchased a triple-chime, walnut, Georgian Mantel clock from a reputable, luxury mail-order catalogue for $5,500.00. The name of the clock’s manufacturer, visible in the photograph was Italian-sounding. It also looked like the sort of fine craftsmanship that the Italians do. I thought I was getting an Italian clock. However, when I received it, I was disconcerted to see (in small letters) “Made in England” (I still have vivid memories of a British-manufactured car that I bought in 1976). The clock came with a booklet that contained high-fluting statements about “full 1-year warranty” and “lifetime support”. The clock ran for 8 months and then stopped chiming. I contacted the Brit manufacturer for some “lifetime support”. They sent me an e-mail with a link to a website called “national clockshop directory dot com”. I’ll leave you to imagine how much use that was. Fortunately, on Angie’s list, I found AM Clocks, close to my home. I took the clock in and they found the problem and repaired it, in just over a month. They also informed me that the actual mechanism is German, not British (thankfully). After that, the clock ran flawlessly for two years during which time I just kept winding it up. Recently, they sent me a card reminding me to bring it in for inspection and oiling ($95), which I did. I never realised that clock mechanisms need periodic oiling but, I suppose, it makes sense (perhaps that’s why it broke down in the first place - years in storage during which the oil evaporated/oxidised). I think, if I bought another clock, I would take it to AM Clocks immediately after I received it and get it checked out.

Well, the work was fine, but their estimates were misleading. Or I should perhaps say, their estimates were for just having the clocks cleaned but each clock turned out to need extra work. This work bumped the price of the work up rather considerably. Estimate for first clock, $295 for basic labor plus parts. Final cost for first clock: $422. Estimate for second clock, also $295 for basic labor plus parts. Final cost for second clock: $377. Thus my $590 worth of estimates ending up actually being $799. And even this wasn't the problem...the clocks simply needed more work than they thought at first. No, the problem was that no one called to tell me that the almost $600 cost was going to end up being almost $800. I'm very lucky that it didn't matter to me. And even if it had mattered, I still would have coughed up the extra money because what choice would I had had if I wanted my clocks back, since they had already done the work. So what I'm saying is, make sure you tell them to call you if the cost is going to go up and ask you if it's okay to proceed.

"We always quote the repair $$ + Parts. We can not know what parts are needed until it is totally taken apart and cleaned, then we examine each of the parts and take care of the wear and tear. Once it is taken apart and cleaned, you are at the point of no return. If we don't take care of all the parts necessary we can not guarantee the job. If we have to call every customer and in a lot of cases wait several days for them to call back, we can not complete the jobs within the time quoted. We get the majority of our jobs because our turn around is 4-6 weeks not 9 months like our competitors."

AM Clock packed movement in a way that was a "short cut" form Howard Miller specifications and recommendations of three local (Indianapolis), certified clock repair people. Chime rod snapped off as a result necessitating an expensive and involved repair and part replacement. AM Clock would not take responsibility even after referring AM to Howard Miller YouTube video on how to prepare clock movement, and their acknowledging that the clock was not prepared to that specification.

"The only purpose to put something on the chime rods is to prevent them from rattling during move. Customer also said that he did not use a clock shop to unpack said clock. The only way the chime rod could break is when taking off the cardboard or in our case bubble wrap, they had to pull it sideways and not straight down. Using either cardboard or bubble wrap if not pulling straight down when removing could break rod. The most expensive rod costs about $10.00 and a clock shop does not need 2 house calls to replace it. The customer can actually unscrew the chime block & remove the broken rod and either bring it to clock shop for replacement rod or even do it himself, or at least measure the broken rod so the clock shop can bring the proper length rod for the house call. We offered to send a replacement rod to customer all he needed to do is measure the length of rod so we could send the right length. We have packed many many clocks for moving and have never had a problem. This is a first. Customer will not cooperate."

good. clock actually chimes more quietly(a good thing) . had no knowledge going in of what the cost to replace this piece was or how long it would take to get the clock back.. Found out the clock itself was worth around $750 if bought today. Was still surprised it cost $275 to repair. The clock was ready when they said it would be-4 to 6 weeks. There aren't a lot of places to do research to become informed. The cost surprised me but they did exactly as they promised.

I left the clock with her and returned a week later. She had adjusted the pendulum and everything was working fine She then spent about 30 minutes with me instructing me on care of the clock, the difference between oiling and cleaning, how to maintain it and so on. The total cost for all of this was $25. I cannot recommend these people enough. Not only are they competent and honest, they are also extremely customer focused. It i unusual to receive such outstanding service these days. When the clock finally does need an ovehaul ,as it certainly will, I will not hesitate to return.

I’m very happy with the service that I received from AM Clock Repair. I found them to be experts in clock repair and maintenance. I own a grandfather clock that needed extensive service. Lynda and August visited my home and did the exact work that I expected at the cost that was explained up front. I found them to honest and very helpful. I was very uncomfortable working with these people. They wanted even more money to overhaul the clock which operated well and had been recently serviced. I chose these people because I recently moved and needed a new clock repair company to work on my clock collection. I am still looking for such a company.

"The service that had been done by the other company was just oiling. The manufacturing companies that make the movements say that all clock movements need to be totally taken apart and cleaned every 7 - 10 years because dust gets into the movement and is very abrasive to the movement. We do all repairs by the book. We recommend the proper service based on age and condition of the movement. We have Master Clock Makers from Germany & England which is the highest quality training possible."

This was an absolute miracle. My husband was extremely sick and since that time has passed away. The first day went to the hospital my daughter and granddaughter came out to see if I'd left stuff in the refrigerator and granddaughter reset the clock. Pulled the chain and embedded one of the things up in the top of the clock itself. I ended up getting the name of the service from a neighbor. After a couple of weeks he came out and had things dismantled and I asked what's this going to run? He said about $1200 and I about dropped my teeth. Anyhow, I routinely pray about whatever I do and I finally said to the Lord after 2 or 3 days, this is ridiculous, I'm handling a life and death every day in perfect peace and I have my stomach tied up in knots over this clock I need to have fixed. I just gave the problem to the Lord and within a few days I got my Angie's List book, which I took to an nursing facility where my husband was by this time and he asked me again if I had wound the clock and I said no. He said there's an article about clocks in here but it doesn't have anything to do with us and there was a 6 page spread on this clock dealer that had come to my house and put the clock back in order. Completely took care of the situation. Vindicated the smear.

Provider provided and upfront estimate. Went into detail what they might have to do to fix the clock. Cleaned, the clock, added bushings, and a new main spring. Clock works like a dream

Took pains to demonstrate the need for a full overhaul and generally, to explain things and to explain how to take proper care of the clock in the future. Was prompt, courteous, friendly. Final cost was almost exactly the same as his estimate. Guarantees his work, is prepared to answer follow-up questions until everything is running just perfectly. A major overhaul is not cheap but is the only way to keep a family heirloom running. And if you need a total overhaul, then you want August from A M Clock to be the one to do it--he knows what he's doing. The clear education in how to keep it running should prevent this kind of major cost from recurring soon. Very pleased with the service and conversation.

This clock is my (handicapped) son's pride and joy and he was worried sick that it would never be 'the same' again. Augie took the clock mechanism it to his shop, completely disassembled it, then cleaned, repaired, replaced and restored every single gear and every single tiny piece, and, finally, reassembled it. Today Scott's clock sounds better than ever. It sounds like a clock you might hear chiming the quarter hours in some magnificent European palace. Augie takes tremendous pride in his work, and as he said, he restored it 'to it's original condition'. Thank goodness we found this amazing man. Thank you, Angie..
