$40,000
Initially the project moved along nicely, but Doug kept asking how much we could spend and wanted to be more involved. The demolishing took place, and we had no real idea of what was needed at that time. He had a crew working and we paid during the process. After the house was moved for a complete new basement and going back onto the new larger basement (to include addition) is where we got wise. Doug charges about $8,000 for some basic framing in the basement, which should have taken no more than 1 day to do. The total billed hours reached over $40,000 of which almost $33,000 was paid during the process. We went with another contractor who framed out the basement, additions and second flooring or close to 5,000 square foot of the 7,000 square foot house for about $15,000. We are certain that Doug (Handy Man) over charged us for close to $25,000 in this project and will go to litigation with him. Beware and do your research when you contract with this company and person.
