My husband found this company online (before we were members of Angie's List) and had a guy come over and look at the issues we wanted addressed. The gutter and down-spout was a straight forward installation. The handyman was the one who recommended making vinyl covers to install over the wood soffits to keep the structural design without having to scrape and re-paint. Again that installation went well, and so far, a year later, everything has held up. If the story ended there, I might be giving a different rating; however, when the handyman came out for his original assessment, my husband pointed to some cracks in the mortar between the bricks in our chimney and asked if anything could be done about that; he said yes, he could do some tuck pointing. The gutter and soffit cover installations went into two days. On the evening of the second day, he was wrapping up the final vinyl covers and said he would move next to the tuck pointing. We were on our way to an evening appointment and left him to finish the job and didn't return until dark. In the daylight ours we were horrified to see the condition of our chimney--mortar glommed on in thick sheets, not tucked in between bricks as the it should have been for a tuck point job. We contacted the company who stood by the handyman's work even after we got a chimney professional out to take a look at it. It was when that professional was on our roof that we found out not only did we have mortar all over our chimney, but on our shingles and on a window sill below the chimney. When we relayed that information back to the company they claimed the mortar on the roof and the window sill would wash away in the rain! We sent pictures of the damage and they claimed to not see anything wrong with the job that was done and that we obviously did not understand what tuck pointing was. In the end, after getting our credit card company involved, they deducted the cost of what they were charging for the tuck pointing part of the job. Unfortunately, to undo the damage they did, the chimney would need to be torn down to the roof line and rebuilt--at a cost of ~5 times the refund we were given. Needless to say, this interaction was what led us to subscribe to Angie's List. If only we'd been wise enough to do so beforehand.

Update to Provider's Response:
Unfortunately Shannon's assessment that we must have them and quot;mixed up with some other handyman serviceand quot; as we and quot;have never been in contactand quot; with them is incorrect. I verified with the staff of Angie's List that my husband and I did indeed do business with this exact company. We have the emails (signed by Shannon), invoices on their letterhead, and documentation from our credit card company, all of which include this business's information. As I mentioned in my description of events above, it was my husband, not me, that was in direct contact with this company, and we do not share the same name. If they are still in doubt, I would be happy to provide these documents to them offline.

Excellent electrical work--really knew what he was doing. Jim also replaced/repaired some drywall for both areas where the electrical work was done and was able to match the existing wall texture better than I thought anyone would be able to do. Jim was very knowledgeable, professional, and conscientious about the jobs. Great job would definitely call Hand R Services again. A big plus is they pre-screen their contractors taking some of the risk off the homeowner

Not good.
Response from Handyman & Remodeling Services
"Although this job was completed almost two years ago, I was able to review the notes from the project. I am a bit confused for your written comments do not coincide with your rankings. For I am pleased that you wrote that the craftsmanship and our office staff’s customer service was very professional. It is disappointing that a call to our office was not made when the original craftsman was not responding to your direct calls to him. We do have a policy of our customers needing to call our office direct and not the craftsman to avoid situations like this. At that time we would have taken the appropriate action to make sure everything was completed per your satisfaction. Again, I am glad that your project was finished to your satisfaction as that is our ultimate goal."

Handyman it's chosen installation contractor, Percision Exterior, lead by Tim Zantow, was a terrible choice for our window installation. The contractor was prompt to visit us and give an estimate but that was about the end of the good news. The estimate was lost and I never got a professional estimate. Neither company could produce it. Next, the installer was 35 minutes late and did not fully pick up after themselves. The kicker was the invoice of work. They over charged us on the amount by nearly $220 dollars and denied our previously agreed upon coupon (shown on the lost estimate). Nearly 20 phone calls later and having to deal with the owner of Handyman, the issue was finally resolved. It took me to begging over the phone to get a scappy invoice of work via email for tax purposes. Very unprofessional service and follow-up regarding customer service. Do not hire these people!

"Hello Member, I am disappointed with the fact you are not happy with this job. I know we worked together to resolve these issues and per our last phone conversation, I thought we had. That being said, I do have some concerns with your comments and would like to address them. The first is, 1. Precision Exterior (Tim Zantow) is a contractor we have used for some time and he was chosen for this job because of his past work history and positive comments he has received from past customers. However, our business model is, if there is a complaint to this magnitude we will and have ended our relationship with him. 2. The lost estimate. I am not sure what happened here, however if you would have called the office we would have taken care of this immediate. It is extremely important to call the office, not the contractors so we can take care of all of your needs. 3. You say you were overcharged for this job. In fact I talked to you personally about this and not only refunded you the money you were overcharged, I also refund you extra money to as a way to apologize for your bad experience. We have a guarantee that if you are not happy, you don’t have to pay and as we talked about the fact that you were unhappy, you were not unhappy to that level, yet this letter portrait’s something very different. In fact, you even commented that the craftsmanship of the window install was highly skilled. Member, I do agree that this job did not go as planned and that you had a bad experience with us. What I struggle to understand is that I (the owner) worked directly with you to make this right and even refunded you extra money as a way to say I am sorry. As an owner of a business, I know that not everything goes perfect and what is important to me is that we do everything in our power to make it correct. We deal with thousands of customers per year and less the one half percent of customers have issues and for this I apologize. My goal is for perfection and when we don’t achieve that, I will do whatever it takes to make a customer happy when something goes bad as I believe I did in this case per our final conversation. It is disheartened to have a conversation as we did and for you to tell me that I have personally addressed your concerns and made you whole and then to have something posted like this. Tell me what else could have done? I am a business owner. This is my family’s lively-hood. I take these issues seriously and when I do everything in my power per our conversation to make the situation right, then you go post like this, is extremely disappointing."

Most companies estimated 4-6 hours for this work even though I couldn't fathom it ever taking more than 2 hours. Given that, Handyman's estimate seemed the fairest. However, the job only took one hour, but the cost was not revised. There were no parts costs, I supplied all materials. The service man showed up on time, and was friendly and professional. The hour even included him running up the street to the hardware store and getting the special type of lightbulb my new exhaust fan/light needed.
Response from Handyman & Remodeling Services
"Hello Member, I am disappointed with the fact you are not happy with the cost of the job. Your exact concern is why we always quote per the job and not the hour, so you always know the cost before the project starts. Image if we started your job and got into much more than we anticipated. We would not have charged more than the original quote thus protecting you. We believe we charge a very fair price for our services and you always know the price before the job is started. We never start a job without your acceptance for the work to begin. Again, I am disappointed you are unhappy with the price. Shannon Seegmiller Handyman [email protected]"

William arrived on time, preformed the job within the estimate and time on both occasions. He was courteous, helpful and went above and beyond with the little things. (such as cleaning out the tub drain, caulking and repainted part of a wall that had some water damage. ) The price was solid, and the work was done well.

Damaged area was repaired adequately. Crack that was suppose to be repaired and unnoticeable was unchanged in appearance. One area in repaired area has bubbling/cracked paint. Most distressing is that the entire ceiling was not painted- there are areas that were completely missed. John (who did the work) did return my call but got offended when I requested a receipt for the materials I paid for and questioned a $60 trip charge that was changed to $90 without explanation. He said he would check with the office and get back to me- never did- and Handyman connection has not returned my calls. Receptionist says she will give them my message but no one returns my calls over the last 3 weeks. So much for their satisfaction guarantee. I have previously had two positive experiences with this company but now I question how they handle problems and will look for another contractor for my remodeling needs.

"Hi Member, I apologize you had a bad experience with us after you have had two great experiences. I have tried several times to contact you over the past couple of months to find out in more detail what happened and to see what I can do to make the situation right. I also just wanted to let you know that in late 2009 we had some turn-over in our office and am wondering it that lead to the communication breakdown. Again, I don’t want to make an excuse, just wanted to let you know what happened and would like you to call me directly to see if we can resolves this issue. Thanks. Jeff 715.432.5333 Owner"

Two days after I called the business the gentleman showed up on time to give me my free estimate. I needed to do something with my deck to make it look better as it was aging. The gentleman showed me on a small area of my deck what a difference power-washing it would be. He also suggested that I re-stain and seal the deck and steps and railings after the power-washing. He showed up two days later to do the work which took two days due to drying time in between the stain and sealant. After he completed power-washing the deck he brought me out to show me a small area of vinyl siding that he had power-washed and boy what a difference that made. He got me another estimate on power-washing my entire house and I decided to go ahead and hire him for that also. He came back the second day arriving on time and finished putting the seal on the deck and I paid him with credit card when he was completed. I received a 12 month warranty on the work that was performed and shortly after the gentleman was complete I received a phone call from the office telling me that I was a preferred customer and that I would be receiving priority scheduling, $50.00 credit card for referring a new customer to them that used their service and 17% off all future work. I couldn't ask for much more. I was very pleased with Handyman Connection and the gentleman that helped me at my home.

We called into Handyman Connection to see if they could do this for us. They were great on the phone explaining how there process works and how they were different then the other Handyman services. (They have some great benefits). They came out and gave us a couple of Free Estimates so we could decide what option we liked best. We had them do the work, they did a great job! After the work was completed, we got a follow-up call from someone different then the craftsman to see how happy we were with the job and if there were anything they could do better. We then got a thank-you card in the mail that also indicated we are now one of there preferred customers and we qualified for even more benefits. Overall, a great experience! We will use them again!

I called them to get an estimate for some odd jobs around the house, they were very pleasant on the phone explaining how there process works and they also outlined some of there benefits. Next we set up a free estimate. They showed up on time to give me an estimate, which they ended up giving me two different estimates to choose from. We scheduled the work for the following week, which they have completed, did a great and job and cleaned up after them selves. The cool thing is after the work was done they followed up with phone call to me to see if I was satisfied (I am) and to let me know I was now a preferred customer and also let me know all the benefits that come with that. Overall very satisfied
