ServiceMaster DSI – Downers Grove

Terrible! Roof repair very different color from the rest of the roof. Kitchen cabinets damaged upon removal. Would not respond when asked if they did any work in the last 4 months. Did not get a building permit when required. Required cash upfront & then did not do the work. Ignored demand for cash to be returned. Horrible experience.

Discouraged.  After our basement flooded, State Farm referred us to ServiceMaster.  Upon contact, they approximated the cost for cleaning to be around $500, considering we had no carpet.  When they got here, the first estimate went up to $3000!!  Keep in mind my husband had already emptied out EVERYTHING into the gargage except a pool table and book shelf.  I was in shock and told them I could not pay that amount.  He said he would re-visit the pricing and take out any drying equipment, etc.  Think he came back at $2300... !!!  I said no and asked them to stop.  At this point, half the basement was done (30 minutes later at most?) and to let me know how much. $644 to clean a tile floor!   Overall, feel like they wanted to max out our insurance coverage - and that would be how much it cost.  Terribly upset and crushed, really.  Don't feel it was appropriate or fair to "estimate" while work was being done - I had no recourse at that point.

When my basement flooded due to a sewerage fill up State Farm sent Service Master to dry and remove basement flooring and walls. They also packed up our posessions and put them in starage. All financial matters were between the insurance company and Service Master however I felt that they were they were polite, did a good job and worked quickly.

The negative review is for theft from my apartment by the staff of ServiceMaster vs the service itself. The services were done well and on time (my only problem with the service itself was that they broke down wall piping and moved all of my furniture to the middle of the room, however they did not move the furniture back or put the piping back. Separate person had to be hired to do the clean up after Service Master). 
The biggest issue however is that I had a large ticket item stolen from my apartment by one of the workers. Due to the water damage and my work schedule, I was too trustworthy and gave permission to Service Clean to enter my apartment when I was not present. On Saturday 8/17 when I was gone for one hour - two service men came in set up additional dryers. As I was not expecting them on a Saturday, I left my $10,000 Rolex on top of my jewelry box in my bedroom where the work was being done. As soon as I came back home, I noticed that the watch that was there an hour ago was missing. I did not want to wrongly accuse anyone, so I spent the weekend turning my small apartment upside down - and the watch is indeed gone. I have filed a police report and am working with the investigation - however ServiceMaster has not been helpful. It's been a week and I have yet to hear from their insurance company or have any follow up with steps they are taking to solve this. I am devastated by this loss as it has a lot of sentimental value and something I can never afford again. I was looking forward to having this watch in the family for generations to come. 
I wanted to share this as if you chose to Service Master into your home, please be very careful about your valuables as they will be taken.

The initial cleanup, drying, and dehumidifying was done quickly and professionally.  The painting and carpet replacement was done very well.  The job took approximately 10 days longer to complete than was initially estimated by the project manager, and there was no clear reason why.  We didn't choose any materials that were out of stock.

The people who worked on the project did very good work, however they weren't always on time. The overall supervisor was hard to deal with at times.

It looks great.  I have them do my carpeting all the time.  But......I was quoted $286 on the phone and only added the Scotchguarding to the front of 3 cushions and the top of the arms of my recliner.  The bill was $353. I ignored the "pitch" to do the grout on lots of tile floors   I had moved almost everything out of the rooms because I know they don't move things.  I moved little stuff and chairs in the dining room, a big wing chair in the living room, a heavy trunk in the family room, put the leaves up in the dining room AND moved my recliner out of the family room.  I'm a 71 yr olld lady with a bad back and told him when he came I'd need help getting a few things back in.  He was leaving and I asked him about help moving some things back (the recliner, wing chair and the trunk).  He said they couldn't be moved back because  the carpeting was wet and the varnish on the wood.......  I was so angry I didn't tell him they all had legs rubber or metal feet and could have been put on those foil things.  Needless to say my tip money stayed in my pocket.  So far I've moved my recliner and computer chair back and am hurting a lot.  I hate to give up Service Master Clean because my carpeting looks great but these two problems and starting to make me wonder.

The man gave me an estimate, and it turned out to be like $1000 more, but he still honored his original estimate. I thought that was pretty good. They were very quick to respond. They had said that they would come as soon as we got the sump pump fixed and they did. They came with all their equipment and did the job, and they were nice enough to haul away some stuff in their truck for us. They were very friendly and kind of even humorous, which was nice in a stressful situation. They came back three days later and checked everything over again and gave us some fungicide.

They were the least expensive of the three estimates that I received. I like that they were able to come out for the appointment and send me the estimate in the same day. They were very professional and responsive to me. They were very helpful throughout the process. They called to let me know ahead of time that they were going to be running a little bit behind the original schedule. I have been very pleased with the work that they did. Everything looks very good and it has been very effective.

The representative came out the next day. One of the first things the rep wanted to know was how much the insurance company would cover. I told him and his exact response was, "Oh, this is going to cost way more that that." He hadn't even looked at the damage yet. When he looked he said that he was going to have a crew come over right then and move our things into storage and that we had better find a place to stay until the work was completed. He also said that we should charge the hotel stay to the insurance company. He was trying to take advantage of us and our insurance company. We told him to leave and promptly called another company, where we had great service and did not feel like we were being bullied into making a split decision. I reported Servicesmaster's tactics to our insurance company.

They basically brushed me off and told me to hire a main or another cleaning service. When I called someone else they said that they couldn't do it and that I need to find someone else.

Company was flexible on scheduling needs. Two techs arrived on time (called to say they were on their way). Once here they were unable to perform work as scheduled because of the cold weather temperature. Service Master did not want the liability if pipes froze, which was understandable. Techs were friendly and polite.

They had everything done very quickly. It was kind of a rush job and they had no problem completing it at all. Their prices were very low and they did a great job. I would have to say I have no complaints with them at all.

He said there were a couple spots that he couldn't clean, when he left I was able to clean the spots with a wet rag myself.

THE ANSWERING SERVICE WAS VERY PLEASANT. THE ESTIMATOR HAD A DIFFICULT TIME ESTIMATING THE WORK BECAUSE I WAS UNABLE TO BE THERE UPON HIS ARRIVAL. WE SPOKE OVER THE PHONE AND A FEW DAYS LATER HE PHONED ME TO ASK ME AGAIN WHAT I NEEDED DONE. HOWEVER, WE DECIDED NOT TO MOVE AND NOT TO HAVE THE WORK DONE. THEY WERE VERY POLITE AND I WOULD CONSIDER THEM IN THE FUTURE.

THE CONTRACTORS WERE LATER FINISHING THEIR WORK AND I HAD TO KEEP RESCHEDULING SERVICE MASTER. THEY WERE VERY PATIENT WITH MY MANY PHONE CALLS. THE GUY THAT CAME OUT TO CLEAN WAS GREAT. MY BASEMENT HAS NEVER LOOKED AND SMELLED SO CLEAN. I WOULD USE THIS COMPANY AGAIN.

WE HIRED THIS COMPANY BECAUSE IT WAS THE ONLY ONE WE FOUND THAT USED A HEPA VACUUM (WE WERE CONCERNED THERE MIGHT BE LEAD-BASED PAINT DUST IN OUR HOUSE AFTER WORK WAS DONE ON IT). THEY WERE EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL AND COURTEOUS, WORKED HARD, AND DID A THOROUGH CLEANING. HOWEVER, I FELT THE PRICE WAS VERY HIGH, AND IF I HAD NOT BEEN THERE TO SUPERVISE AND POINT OUT SOMEWHAT OBVIOUS THINGS THEY HAD MISSED, THERE IS NO WAY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN WORTH THE AMOUNT WE PAID. BECAUSE I WAS THERE, WE DID GET A VERY THOROUGH CLEANING. HOWEVER, I AM STILL FINDING SPOTS THEY MISSED. FOR THE AMOUNT WE PAID TO HAVE THIS EMPTY HOUSE CLEANED, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY SPOTLESS. NONETHELESS, THEY DID DO A GOOD JOB, IT WAS NICE TO WORK WITH VERY PROFESSIONAL, FRIENDLY AND RESPONSIVE PEOPLE.

SERVICEMASTER WAS PLEASANT WHEN I CALLED. UNLIKE OTHER COMPANIES, THEY DID NOT READ OFF A LIST OF WHAT I HAD TO MOVE/REMOVE. THEY CONFIRMED OUR APPT. THE DAY BEFORE. HERNANDO ARRIVED 5 MINUTES EARLY WITH A TRUCK WITH HOSES THAT MY HUBBY (IN THE CLEANING BIZ HIMSELF) PRONOUNCED STATE OF THE ART. HERNANDO WAS ABLE TO CLEAN SO THAT MY MOM NEVER HAD TO GO UPSTAIRS. WE HAD ONE AWFUL STAIN. HERNANDO WORKED ON IT WITH 4 PRODUCTS AND MADE IT ALMOST PERFECT. I WAS DELIGHTED, BUT HE WAS DEJECTED. $82 OF THIS PRICE IS FOR A PROTECTANT. NO HARD SELL HERE AT ALL, BUT HERNANDO AND HIS WORK CLOSED THE DEAL FOR ME. THE CARPET LOOKS LIKE NEW.

THEY CLEANED 2 STORY HOUSE & GARAGE POST-REHAB WORK, TOP TO BOTTOM, INCLUDING USE OF HEPA VACUUM & SPECIFIC MEASURES TO CLEAN LEAD PAINT DUST. BROUGHT THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT, WORKED HARD, GREAT RESULTS. BUT QUITE PRICEY.
