The so-called "itemized tax receipt" is an itemized list of the items that sold and didn't sell, along with the value and othe information. It's not a tax receipt because the shop isn't an IRS-qualified organization to receive donations. The shop misleads consignos by giving an itemized list stamped "tax receipt" with a declared value. As required by IRS for income tax charitable deductions, the tax payer must donate items to a "qualified organization" as defined by the IRS, NOT for-profit businesses! (Qualified organizations are charitable organizations.) The owner told me the name of the organization (a church) where she says she donates unsold mechandise. However, more than once I saw my unsold clothing on the racks after my consignment period ended. The clothes weren't being donated, they were being sold. Because the consignment period ended, I didn't receive a cent for these items, the owner received the full price of the sale. So, consigners can't use the receipt for income tax deductions because My Favorite Things isn't a charitable organization, and even if it was, the clothes aren't all being donated! It makes me very angry that this shop is putting unknowing consignors in a position of lying to the IRS. This shop should return unsold clothes to consignors who want them so they can donate them to a qualified, charitable organization.
Description of Work: This shop consigns and sells designer and better brand used clothing and to a limited degree decorative household items and furniture. The shop sells items for a 90 day consignment period and consigners receive 40% of the selling price. With a few exceptions, unsold mechandise is not returned to the consignor and the shop provides an "itemized tax receipt."
