I deeply regret working with M&M Restoration and Construction for floor refinishing. By all accounts, the floor refinishing a rushed and amateur job. I had to spend a great time of time, effort and money to have their work completely redone by another company. Literally everything M&M touched had to be fixed. Not one piece of their work was salvageable.
We moved out for a week while M&M did the work. Then, we had to move out for an additional two weeks while another company fixed their work. As you would imagine, hiring a company to fix damaged work is an expensive undertaking. The cost to have the floor completely refinished the second time was CONSIDERABLY HIGHER than I was going to pay M&M. M&M left me "holding the bag". They are completely aware of the problem and left it solely on me to pay for their mistakes.
Here are the facts from the job:
- M&M was hired to refinished the wood flooring on two floors and a staircase.
- The project start date was agreed to by all parties, and the work started on a Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon, the head flooring person LEFT ON VACATION without notifying anyone. His team was as surprised as me.
- The floors were improperly sanded, so after spending over an hour choosing a stain color, the time was wasted and the whole process had to be repeated.
- The crew left a Solo cup of stain on the floor over the weekend, which leaked all over the freshly sanded floor. They covered up the mess before we arrived, made no mention of it, and made no attempt to resand the floor.
When the team was "finished" with the project:
- The spilled stain from the tester cup was never sanded and was clearly visible on the floor. This left 2x3 ft. splotchy, discolored floor in the main section of the living room.
- The sanding job was done so poorly that swirl markings from the machine could be see literally all over the floors and stairs.
- The sanding also left halo markings around the room, making highly visible lighter/darker areas of the stained floor.
- - The stain itself was unevenly applied. In several places, rags soaked with stain were left and the resulting over-saturated areas could be clearly seen. In other areas, not enough stain was applied, and unfinished wood was left visible.
- - Water spots were left all over the bathroom and hallway floors - someone washed their hands, let it drip onto the newly sanded floor, and then sealed the water spots into the floor.
- - M&M was paid to remove the sink and toilet from the hallway bathroom to avoid any damage to the fixtures. The toilet and sink were never removed and were left covered in stain. (The team even had the nerve to say "once we put the fixtures back, you can move back in". Yeah, they were never taken out.)
- - The sink basins and hand towels were left stained with floor finish and no attempt to clean had been made.
- - The team inserted new vents which were flush to the floor. Then, they stained over the new vents, which SEALED them to the floor. We had to personally razor-blade out every floor vent. When we got the vents out, we discovered the M&M team cut out the wood flooring to insert the vents, DUMPED the scrap wood into the vents, and left it.
- - Markings from stain cans were visible across the house from metal cans being left on the wet stain.
Here's what happened next:
- The flooring person (back from vacation) told me they did a perfectly acceptable job.
The result:
I brought through new flooring companies to assess fixing the job. EVERY flooring expert:
- Asked if I did the work myself
- Expressed shocked at the "amateur work" done by a "professional" company
- Commented on the vents sealed to the floor - apparently, it's Flooring 101 to remove the vents before applying stain
- Mentioned the lack of finish on the floor - even though M&M "applied three coats"
I had to pay a significant increase to a new company to refinish the floors. The stairs had to be hand-scraped to remove the damage from M&M
