Over the years my outer sliding patio storm doors developed a closure gap when closed. I located Sliders by referral from a storm window company. I noted their fine review status on Angie's List, then called to schedule an appointment to get an estimate for repair. Charley, the owner, came out on schedule, calling just before arrival. He carefully appraised the situation on both the outer and inner doors, then gave me a detailed, itemized estimate. I made an appointment to have the work done.
Both his office and he called shortly before the appointment to confirm the arrival time. He and his associate, Phil, studied the door situation and then discovered that the previous estimated work would not be feasible as the doors could not be readily removed from the framework. At my suggestion, though, we arrived at a work-around for solving the closure gap on the outer doors: installing new weather stripping. Because of this change and since the doors could not be removed to install new rollers, the scope of work was considerably reduced. They then proceeded to do some minor but useful maintenance, mainly on the door tracks.
Despite the fact that most of the projected work could not be done, I was still pleased with what could be done. I was particularly satisfied with the pricing schedule that Charley uses, clearly laid out on his invoice forms. They worked on this project for almost two hours, and I thought that my final cost was more than fair.
He applied insulation and changed the rollers which were rusted out. A proper lubrication with PTFE and the door slides like a dream and NO MORE NOISE.
An interesting postscript: Phil, Charlie's assistant, just rescreened two large doors. They had been sun-bleached and had tiny holes. A week earlier, I had left the sliding glass door half open to get some fresh air. When I returned a few hours later, the door had mysteriously closed with no other person in the house. I looked at the base of the door and saw what looked like a raccoon, only to realize that my 17 pound, Maine C*** Cat had managed to get between the screen and the door, and apparently when he tried to exit he slid the door with him! A true testimony as to how easily the door slides. The cat was unharmed, but I don't think he'll mess with Charlie's door again!
Gave us a firm estimate on the spot. Scheduled day to do repairs, were on time (actually called ahead to let us know they were on their way). Fixed all the issues as promised, spent considerable time to make sure job was done right. Actually revised billing DOWN as one of the problems required a different approach. In the end the total job cost us LESS than quotedow often does that happen? Charlie and his crew are real professionals. Very pleased with their work.
An important point - it took us some searching to find Sliders - only showed up in our search on Angie's List. We had found another vendor with premises in downtown Chicago who came out and looked at the doors and discussed providing an estimate to REPLACE our sliding doors -many thousands of dollars because of the area involved. They called us repeated times to discuss the job and would only to come and do a formal estimate if we gave them a non-refundable $200 deposit. Since we had not located Sliders, we reluctantly agreed. And then despite their phone calls they never showed up to do the estimate - in fact denied they'd even scheduled the visit. Big waste of time.
"First of all, this review is coming from the Lake Forest husband who was not present and to whom we never spoke... He got the somewhat skewed details second hand from his wife. Two of our men spent two hours completely removing the door and replacing the Pella rollers on their sliding patio door to the absolute satisfaction of the client. We thoroughly cleaned the tracks 360 degrees, replaced the broken latch, filed burrs on the track, lubricated the lock and cleaned the glass... all again to the satisfaction of the client. We noticed, however, that there were no bumpers on the door to prevent the handle latch from hitting the frame again when opened. So, we installed the largest bumper we had on hand with absolutely no cost to the client to prevent the handle from hitting, but not the latch, if it were positioned vertically. We recommended the client to throw the latch to the down position when the door was open so it wouldn't be impacted if the door was thrown open with force. She understood. We told her that two Pella bumpers would be needed to be installed in the upper and lower tracks to do it right, but we had none on hand at the moment. When we told her that there would be a charge to return with new bumpers, which we were waiting for from Pella, she found that unacceptable as she had already spent too much. Later, she called the office to say that her children had opened the newly repaired sliding door with such force... and without putting the latch lever in the down position that it cracked the latch lever again. She wanted us to return to install new bumpers and a new latch without cost. She was very irate and said that she couldn't watch her children at all times. We gave her three options: 1. We would return to install new bumpers and a new latch lever for the same $77 that we charged her the first time to replace the lever alone. 2. We would send her a new latch lever with bumpers without cost for them to install themselves. 3. They could buy the parts from Pella and we would return to install everything without cost. None of these options were acceptable. We were not rude and actually suggested that she provide this review to Angie's List, so that we would have the opportunity to set the record straight. We try to do everything possible to achieve customer satisfaction, but we do not appreciate being taken advantage of."
He was friendly, professional, and didn't try a hard sell. We arranged for them to repair the door about a week later. The repair went exactly as planned, exactly as quoted, with no suprises. The door works exactly as it should.
If more contractors operated this way, we would have many more repairs done on our home. The experience was exactly as we expected. The work was done properly, the price was what we expected, and we didn't get any BS.
I must tell you, Charlie did a great job fixing our sliding door, he promised us we would be able to slide it using only 2 fingers. Two years later, it is still running just as smoothly as when he first fixed it. We have used it many many times. I would definitely recommend him.
"We provide all our customers a 100% satisfaction guarantee for a full three years. It is printed on our invoice in color. We mentioned to the member that due to the extreme cold on the day the work was performed that the adhesive on the weatherstrips may not hold securely, but to call us back as soon as the weather gets above freezing and we will replace it. We have never received a call from this customer. Today we left a message for her and offered to replace the weatherstrip with one with a stronger adhesive material or we would refund her total bill in full."
