Response from Jesse Heating & Air Conditioning
"When you called to schedule your appointment, you affirmed that you knew of our $80 diagnostic fee and agreed to it. We reattached your thermostat and turned your fan switch from on to auto. (that IS service performed, as you affirmed in the Angie's list questionnaire) We have offered you the $80 off of a new unit as you requested since you've told us you want to replace, but not until next year."

Tom arrived on time, answered questions, seems (near as we can tell 24 hours later) to have repaired the problem, was careful with the mess and cleaned up afterwards. Kudos!

They are going down under the house. I've lived in this house for years and I didn't know I had a hole under it. I've always had concrete for a basement. Jesse's Heating and Air installed my fireplace and they put my furnace in. It's a Lenox and I'm telling you, there's not a cold spot in my house. You flip a switch and it come on and you flip a switch and it goes off. It is really nice. I knew I was coming back to where you have ice storms and I didn't have a fireplace in the south because I didn't need one. I needed one here so I put it in and I really like their work. I think they are pretty good. The only thing I'm confused on is there is a $1000 difference on the bill but I'll fight that out Monday. This week I'm going to chill out because I have these guys running in and out of my house. They are insulating under my hole and they are putting plastic down. It's a pretty big job that they are doing. Then they are insulating my garage and my sidewalls. I took bids. They were quick, they came out right away, I had no problems with being put off. The guys were very good and very efficient. They did all of this in like 6 hours instead of dragging it out all day.

Jesse techs arrived on time and immediately got to work in our small cramped attic. They performed all the sealing and caulking and routed the bathroom exhaust fans through the roof. Then they blew in the new insulation.  Rather than routing their equipment through the house to reach the attic access, they moved all their equipment to the side of our house and routed the hose through a bedroom window to minimize the disruption in the house.  When they completed the work, they ran another blower door test to verify that they had sealed everything properly.  The results were a 25% improvement.  Now that the house is more air tight, the tech explained to my wife that it will be a necessity to run the bathroom exhaust fans anytime the shower or bath is used as the humidity will have no place to go.  They also answered a question that my wife had about soot appearing on the ceiling next to our fireplace.  The tech asked if she burned candles on the mantle because the lack of insulation in that area would create a cool spot to draw the soot from the candles.  Very nice techs, represented their employer well.  Due to Ameren Act On Energy program, our cost was about half as the utility paid for the other half.  Really a great deal for us and for them as the energy conservation will not require them to build more power plants. A great program.

UPDATE:  So, I wanted to update this review after a few months to be able to include information on why EVERYONE needs to do an energy audit of their home.  The home energy audit itself was no charge.  Ameren Illinois Act On Energy program absorbs this. The total bill was $2000, of which we paid about $950, Ameren Illinois paid the rest.  In the first few weeks following the insulation addition and sealing of energy loss pathways we observed that the temperature inside the house stayed very, very constant and did not cause the A/C to run until late in the afternoon. Previously, the A/C would kick on in the late morning and then end up running on and off into the night. We are on budget billing with Ameren and our combined gas/electric billing would average around $225 a month.  Now, 4 1/2 months later, our budget billing is at $179, almost $50 a month savings. So, this work will be paid for in energy savings in 18 months. Plus, with the A/C and the furnace running less, it should extend the life of that equipment and bring more savings. My wife wants to know why we didn't do this 10 years ago, and I'm asking myself the same thing.

Very good. The man they sent out was very nice. He did a good job. He was very patient and answered all of my questions. He was very good. They came out earlier than the appointment made which is good.

I am very happy with them. They were very fast and efficient. The price was very reasonable. Kelly really knew what she was doing when it came to measuring. She listened to my ideas and kept the plan realistic.

I am very very pleased with them. They are very good. They did it in such a way that I have to do it just like a switch and it moves in.

The actual cleaning and inspection went fine. The serviceman was very nice and professional, explaining to me what he was looking at and what problems we had to deal with. The company's scheduling and punctuality was very bad though. I made an appointment, and the secretary called to say the serviceman had a family emergency and would have to reschedule. Rescheduled that appointment for the next Monday. The appointment was supposed to be at 11am, got a call from secretary and said serviceman was held up at another job and did not show up until 12:30pm. Since problems were found with our furnace, I requested that a salesperson from the company come out to give an estimate on a new unit. That appointment was scheduled for the next day at 1pm. I was at home at 1pm waiting for the salesperson when I got a call at 1pm from the secretary stating that the salesperson called in sick that day, and would have to reschedule. She said she forgot that she had put me on his schedule for that day. She had the entire morning to let me know that yet another appointment would have to be rescheduled and did not call me until I had already rushed home to meet the salesperson at the 1pm appointment time. Very disappointing. Needless to say, we went with another company for our new unit.

After an electrical fire kicked off the switch to our gas boiler Christmas night, a service man came the next day (Saturday) to relight it for us, as my husband had not been able to get the boiler relit. The serviceman informed us the boiler was not safe, and in fact refused to leave the house until my husband disconnected the gas supply. He did not charge us for this visit. Jesse then had a salesman come to the house Monday morning and talk through our options for replacement. He did not try to talk us into unnecessary upgrades(such as replacing the radiators or replumbing the house as some other firms had done). Once we gave them the go-ahead, they moved us to the top of the list since we were completely without heat and had small children. The next day a crew showed up to begin work, and they were amazing. It was about 30 degrees in the basement, but they worked for ten hours the first day and almost as long the next on what turned out to be a very difficult job. They were polite and respectful, and refused all my offers of hot drinks and food. When the job proved tricky they sent for more guys. They returned to the house twice to address issues that came up (less about their work, and probably more about the age and wiring of our house). When we questioned the effectiveness of the new thermostat they simply replaced it for free without question. I cannot say enough about how wonderful these guys were - and worth every penny.
