After reviewing the existing HVAC system, Bill indicated that there was a serious risk that upgrading would not necessarily work well because the house had 4 levels and was designed for radiant heat.  Moreover, Bill estimated the cost of other repairs my co-worker had really underestimated.  Because of Bill?s honest evaluation especially considering that he would be losing the chance for a significant commission, my co-worker?s son decided to terminate the offer.  My co-worker calls him ?St. Bill? and vows to refer everyone he knows needing heating and a/c work to Bill at Builders Heating & Cooling.  He wishes there were more Bill O?Connor?s out there in the various trades.

Their work was excellent!  They found a very simple and convenient solution to the problem by adding an additional air return duct.  The attention to detail is great as they checked to make sure they were installing the duct in the best possible location.  After installation, they cleaned up, tested the furnace to make sure there were no issues, and even did some fine tuning on the new return vent to limit any noise that could occur.
These guys are the best!

Bill O'Connor (great guy to deal with at Builders) called in April to setup an appointment for installation. We had to wait for a warm day to do the installation which did not occur until May. Bill explained that the warmer weather is necessary to set the proper coolant levels for the AC units.

Bill and Brian showed up to do the installation of the new AC units. Last year they had already replaced the circuit breakers in my electrical panels. Before even starting to install the 3 new AC units, they removed the old electrical service boxes running to the AC's outside. I was impressed that they went the extra mile for me and installed newer equipment which they didn't have to but did anyway because they wanted it to be done right.

Once the new electrical service boxes were properly mounted, they then connected the AC units. Before filling them with coolant, they flushed the coolant lines to prepare them for the newer coolant required. This process took about 45 minutes per AC unit; however, when one was done, they started to flush the other line and then proceeded to fill the ready AC with coolant. There was a leak on one unit which they quickly identified and then fixed.

After a full day's work, all of the units were properly installed and ready to use.

What I love most about this company is that they make sure you are a satisfied company. One of the AC units is used to cool off the 2nd floor of a 2-story building. This unit was running constantly for a very long time to cool the top floor. While I understand that the 2nd floor of a building generally takes longer to cool on a hot day, they still looked into the issue for fixes. I talked to Bill about this issue and he looked into the issue I described further. He suggested filling the AC unit for the 2nd floor to the higher range of coolant levels suggested by Rheem. Bill had one of his service guys come out and they were easily able to add more coolant which dropped the temperature coming out of the supply vents on the 2nd floor by about 4 to 5 degrees which should cut down my cooling run time.

This company is great! What impresses me the most is that they go out of there way to make sure you are a happy customer.

When our house was built in 2004, these guys installed the dual HVAC zones - one upstairs and downstairs. The house was a model (no one lived in the house) until we bought it and moved in 5 years after it was built. From the get-go,we could tell our upstairs zone was off. One side of the house got blasted when the heat was on, while the other side of the house was freezing. In summer when A/C was on, the one side would be FREEZING, while the other side was HOT. Contacted the company and they sent out guys to look at things and take measurements. They concluded that the upstairs zone was out of balance, but because it was after 5 years since they installed, they it wasn't covered under their warranty. I consider this a cop out -since no one lived in the house to report their faulty design during the first five years. Fast forward to this year - our third year living in this house - and we're in a tough spot because the upstairs furnace is out in the middle of winter, and I decided to call these guys. They came out promptly, did the work, and charged me. Two days later they called me back to inform me the undercharged me, and would need to add an extra $150 to the bill. "Sorry. Call us in the future, maybe there is something we can do for you." So I inform them about the unbalanced zone upstairs that they installed. "Let me check our notes and get back to you." That was a month ago. Have never heard back. There are lots of HVAC suppliers out there. Save yourself the time and aggravation and stay away from these guys. Just seem to always look for a way out - accurate in only the amount that they charge you. Accuracy/quality suffers when it comes to actual work, and follow-up.

I took a gamble on using this company and really only had the BBB to rely on for a rating. My gamble paid off big time. I love this company! Builders Heating & Cooling was the last contractor that I interviewed for the job. I'm glad that I hung out that long after interviewing about 6 contractors prior to them. I really wanted Rheem furnace equipment and was relying on the manufactures website for acceptable installers. I interviewed a number of other Rheem contractors and while they all seemed OK, Builders H&C stood out for the pack. My contact at the company was Bill. He was very professional from the start and was able to stop by quickly to give me an estimate. When he came out for the initial estimate, he was very thorough in analyzing every part of my old furnace setup so that I would replace all the equipment effectively. I also discussed with him that I would want someone to come out and remove all of the old equipment and come back in a week to install. I needed time to fix the floor where the old equipment was located. He assured me that they would work with my schedule. The next day after he came out, he sent me a quote for the project. We had to do some minor modifications, but I was able to quickly accept. Even before I signed the contract, we had agreed upon a scheduled date for removal which pleased me immensely. They came out about 3 business days after to do the removal. Bill showed up with 2-3 additional workers. The removal was completed in one day and they cleaned up after themselves. I was really impressed with how professional the crew was and how they really cleaned up the work area. I told Bill that I would be able to work on the floor that weekend and we tentatively scheduled for installation in less than 1 week. During this time, Bill also called to arrange a time where he could come out for final measurements for the duct work. The installation occurred on schedule and required two days of work. Each day they had about 3 guys on site. The first day of installation involved putting the furnaces in place and doing the duct work to connect them to the old ducts. They were able to complete this for all 3 furnaces. The second day involved connecting the gas lines, electric, changing out old breakers to new lower amp breakers, and connecting thermostats. One of the furnaces had previously used 2 separate thermostat cables that were spliced into 1 cable prior to reaching the 2nd floor of the building. Bill and his crew were successfully able to run a new, continuous thermostat cable and in doing so, removed the old cable. Once everything was setup, they tested the new furnaces. Bill mentioned that I should open some windows as the heat-exchangers are coated with oil which will set off fire alarms and possibly make some smoke. We ran the furnaces for about 15 minutes. Before Bill left, he did a last minute check on the new equipment. He and Mike inspected the filters and vacuumed any debris that was dislodged in the return duct from the initial run. Bill also double checked the furnace circuitry to make sure all the settings were correct. Overall, I'm extremely please with this company and would love to do more to give them the praise they deserve for their work. They are extremely thorough on the installation. Also, can move quickly to get the job done and work with you on getting the job done on your schedule. These guys are as professional as they come. I look forward to having them come out in the Spring of 2011 to install the AC's.
