This was a very difficult job. First of all, it is often difficult to retrofit a heating system in a house that was never designed for central heat. Second of all, I wanted them to keep the furnace and ducts out of the center of the attic so that I can eventually build a room up there, so they had to run the crosswise ducts under the floor. Thirdly, they had to work around cellulose insulation?recycled paper fluff. From the beginning I was impressed with Ted's problem-solving ability. He has the mind of an engineer. This was a very complicated job and he worked thoughtfully and methodically, providing me with careful explanations every step of the way. Dealing with the insulation was a huge pain in the a***. I had this job bidded out several times and almost everyone was reluctant to deal with it. And I think Ted really regretted it once he got involved, because he and his helper both got sick from breathing it in all day long. And it took a lot longer than they expected. But they remained committed to doing an excellent job. In the final stretch I actually threw in an extra $500 (bringing the total to $5500), since I thought it was a very low price to begin with and I really appreciated the work they were doing. They were thrilled and grateful. Ted came highly recommended by a friend and I can see why. He is extremely attentive to detail and takes great pride in his work. He offered to give me free service for a year and also was very helpful in preparing all of the paperwork for the tax credit I got for installing a high-efficiency furnace. The results are excellent. My house is so much warmer now, and my gas bills quite a bit lower. With the previous ductwork, some rooms were very warm and others were practically unheated. I had very warm doorways but the interiors were frigid. Ted took great care in balancing the rooms, installing extra returns and vents, and moving vents to better places. As far as I can tell he did not take any shortcuts. The new furnace is quiet and does not have to run as often because the heat is so much more even. Ted is a very intelligent, committed tradesman with a great work and service ethic. I can't wait to work with him again and I would recommend him to anyone.
