The tech walked in, looked it over and pinned the problem down to one of two failures within five minutes. He had both parts on the truck but further diagnosed it all to learn the less expensive part would do the trick.
An hour later he was walking out the door and I had a working freezer.
Doesn't really get any better than that.
In addition, the rings around the stove dials were not secured in place and were no longer flush. When we asked Appliance King to fix these issues, Chris said the placement of the oven unit was as good as it would get and told us he could not put it back in the position where it was.
About the wobbly rings around the dials, he said he fixed them when he came back upon our request, and they looked flush at that time, but we found that what he did was not fixing but just a trick by removing the front panel and lifted it so it looked like rings were flush, but when the panel was pushed back to the proper place, the rings were sticking out again and wobbly. He also misplaced the screws that were holding the panel, which we later found burned in the oven.
Since Appliance King could not fix the problems they created, we had to hire another company, to fix these issues. According to the technician, those problems were something basic not being done correctly, and on 5/31/2013, the technician successfully reassembled the controls that Appliance King misaligned and reinstalled the unit in its proper position prior to the Appliance King service visit.
Soon after we had the technician fixing the problem, we talked to Chris and informed him how much we had to pay for the ABT service. He told us that he would call us back, but he never did.
Since then, we've been contacting Appliance King to reimburse us the $149 we had to spend to fix the problems caused by them. On August 7th, we mailed them a copy of the receipt, and talked to the customer service lady several times, but Chris has been ignoring them and wouldn't get back to us.
Pros: The repairman was very courteous, knowledgeable and professional and he worked very quickly.
Cons: (1) He had to come back on a second day because he did not have the correct part with him on the first visit and had to get it from a local supplier. (2) They charged $89 for the service call in addition to charging for parts and labor. (To be fair, they did tell me about the $89 fee up front, but I had assumed it was their minimum fee. It is not--it is in ADDITION to the other charges.) This simple, 15-minute repair ended up costing a total of $209, which is more than a third of the original cost of the oven. (The charge for the new heating element itself was $60. I believe Walmart sells it for $12.99.) I had expected the total charges to be closer to $150.
I own two apartment buildings and this is the third time I've used Appliance King in the last six months. They always have a technician come out in a day or two. The repairmen show up at the appointed time, find the problem and fix it without having to come back. If the appliance is old they'll tell me if it's better to buy a new one instead of wasting money on repairs. I appreciate their honesty and I know I can depend on them..
Update:
The Appliance King called and left a message telling me that they were very sorry for the poor service and would not be charging my credit card. I very much appreciate their willingness to admit fault.
I've had wonderfully clean dishes ever since and am kicking myself for waiting so long to get it done.
