There are two parts to this story.  The first is that I called our regular boiler servicer when the heat was out in our house.  He came out and said that we needed a new boiler and two new pumps.  He said he fixed it temporarily but he couldn't predict when it would go out again.  The owner of the company then came out and gave a quote for $3100-$4500 to have a new boiler or boiler block and two pumps replaced.
Sub City (Manny) then came out to give me a second opinion.  He evaluated the boiler and determined that we did NOT need a new boiler, and even predicted that this one will last another 10 years.  He found a loose connection in a part (the coupler, I think) and replaced it.   He also determined why the pump was leaking water and that we did NOT need a new pump, much less two.  The boiler has been working perfectly ever since.  Manny saved us over $4000 not to mention needless work.
I trust Manny implicitly.  He has honesty and integrity and clearly takes pride in his work.  I am now a lifelong customer.
The other company should be ashamed.  Either they don't know what they are doing, or they are shysters taking advantage of people like me who don't know about boilers.  Either way, they should close up shop.

I've used his (Manny's) service twice and both times he replaced the most expensive part without even consulting. There is no discussion on how much the part costs and whether or not the customer wants it replaced. For example, there was a fault with the wiring harness and he replaced the control board and charged $350 for it. If you get the same control board from a distributor (which is just as simple as going to distributor in south loop) it will cost $125. Gets condescending and argumentative if you question his decision.
