I like these guys so much that even after the first very detailed draft of my Angie’s List review for Reid Roofing got lost in the annals of the interwebs, I'm back to re-write it. If you don’t read my entire review, let me just summarize: Reid Roofing came to me highly recommended, I had a great experience with them that only confirmed the original referrals I got, and I’d hire them again in a second. My only complaint is with the timeliness of some of the office communication, but given the stories I’ve heard about other places (and my experience while I was calling around for estimates), I’d say my complaint is pretty minor. The Situation: We live in classic Chicago brick 2-flat with a silver-top flat roof. The roof was replaced by the previous owner, probably around 18ish years ago. We hadn’t had any issues with our roof, but as “responsible” homeowners, we started looking into roof replacements at the end of the summer. The Estimate: Reid Roofing came to our attention after a couple of rave reviews from friends/neighbors who’d worked with them in the past. Calling to schedule an estimate was painless. Kevin (one of the owners) came out to our home to take a look and I joined him on the roof. He basically talked aloud as he made his assessment of our roof so I could see what he was seeing. He clearly and patiently explained any questions I had, used our neighbors’ roofs as examples/comparisons, etc. I remember asking him about the use of sub-contractors – he said they have all of their own crews (except maybe they have a partner for major masonry work, but I can’t recall for sure). After about a 10-20 minute inspection, he concluded that we probably actually had a few more years left on the roof if we did some smaller repairs, and suggested that he give us 2 estimates: 1) a short-term “band aid” solution(his words) to take care of a few problem areas and tide us over for a few more years, and 2) the full roof replacement (my original request). The Backoffice Scheduling: This is the only part of my experience where I think they could have done (a little) better. Kevin told me it would take a couple days to get an estimate together; after about a week without hearing from them I reached out. At that point Andy (another owner) sent over the estimates pretty quickly. We had a couple back-and-forths on specific items to include in the estimates, (which was perfectly fine), and since we’d been saving up for the anticipated roof replacement, decided to go ahead and get it all down now. Once we sent over the signed proposal, it again took several days to get in touch to actually set the date. These guys are busy, so we basically had to schedule for a month out. Given that roofing is a weather-dependent activity, Andy explained that our date was tentative and that we’d confirm closer to the actual date. The date was so far out that it wasn’t until the night before our scheduled new-roof-date that I realized they’d never called to confirm whether they were coming. So I wasn’t actually sure if anyone would show up the next day, but at 7:30am a crew was at our house ready to literally tear the roof off our house. So maybe I give them a “-“ for not confirming the date as we’d discussed over the phone, but “+” for actually showing up (so I guess it’s a wash). The Work: The crew was great – super polite, came every day 7:30am, kept the area really clean around the house, etc. The first morning Kevin came by, which was reassuring. After taking a look and setting up stuff with the crew, he did come down to tell me that our gutter was actually in worse shape than he’d thought during our initial estimate appointment and that he recommended that we replace it…for about 30 seconds I thought it was some kind of roofer up-sell gimmick…and then he told me he’d replace it at NO CHARGE since it was probably as much for his own benefit (not having to struggle with re-installing a crappy old gutter) as mine (getting a new gutter for free). Also, a gutter is a very minor cost relative to an entire roof replacement – but big kudos to Reid Roofing for not nickeling-and-diming me. We also got a heavy rain one of the evenings before the work was complete – and we were leak-free. The Walk-Through: I think they initially told me the work would take 4 days to complete; they finished ahead of schedule. We got an invoice over email quite promptly, so I called to ask for a walk through (which Kevin had promised at our first appointment.). They were super accommodating about it and the woman on the phone voluntarily told me to disregard the invoice until our walk-through was completed (which I would have done anyway, but it was nice that she was the one to mention it first). A half-hour before the morning of our walk-through, Kevin called saying he had to post-pone our walk through since they were trying to get several projects started before some anticipated rain. No problem on our end, but given our conflicting schedules, it was more than 2 full weeks before we ended up having our scheduled walk-through. Reid Roofing didn’t give us a hard time about the invoice at all throughout this time – to the point where I wondered for a moment if they even wanted our thousands of dollars – but eventually we met up with Kevin. The walk through was quick and smooth, and Reid Roofing has another happy and satisfied customer. I obviously can’t vouch for the long-term quality of their work, but it’s been a month since the new roof was completed and we’ve had a few crazy downpours, and so at the very least we know that there are no immediate issues. And Reid has a 10-year guarantee on their work. Could you get a better price elsewhere? Maybe...I do have a neighbor who passed on them because they thought Reid's price was a little high. But given the referrals we got at the outset from other folks who went with Reid and the experience we had with them throughout our own project, I have absolutely no regrets about my choice. Definitely give these guys a call.
