I really enjoy working with Nick. He is offers great ideas but is flexible when my budget or personal taste requires. He has great
furniture contacts for reasonably priced, well built materials. I got a great modular couch that can be reconfigured to meet the needs of the group in the room. It was Nick's idea that it be modular because it served many functions but it was also good for getting the pieces into the space.
Nick is also willing to disagree. I am paying him for his opinion, so that's what I want.
In my experience with Nick decorating is not delivered in a one moment package. One piece comes, a little later some other pieces come. Then there is the final arranging and accessorizing and we are done. It is a bit like completing a puzzle - typically not done in one sitting.
Nick is also respectful of budget. It is very easy in decorating to get carried away or make changes that impact the budget. Nick has always offered me options to stay on budget, and when we veer off it has been my decision.
"This client gives an accurate portrayal of a small project headed up by Nickolas John. We love to hear these stories, and always strive for reviews such as this."
"The staff at Nickolas John Interiors regrets this review, we certainly strive to make all clients happy and enjoy the process. While we may not agree with these statements and situations surrounding them we certainly take all reviews seriously and under advisement."
This spring 2012 is when we put our home up for sale. We all never expected it to be at the lowest point in the real estate market. I knew that it needed to show well to earn top dollar. I again called Nick to help with the staging for the sale. I told him the budget for staging was $3000 and he completed the task under budget ($2875). His team came out to the house and in a few days worked magic with new furniture and accessories. Our realtor walked into the home and said that she could not find anything that needed to be done. She said that if all her listings were prepared like our home she would be out of a job since the place look great. She commented that it looked better than most model homes!
I took pictures of the before and after, but never posted until now. I knew that after his team did the staging the pictures of this project would finally do it justice. The after pictures are just amazing and I feel truly have helped with our sale.
Needless to say the house sold in 5 days with three offers! In this declining market we have a multiple offer situation. My realtor was completely floored! We received full asking price. Not bad when you hear how homes today are sitting on the market for months on end.
My parents are bittersweet at moving on from this beautiful home; however, in the new ranch home that we will be closing on, Nick will be involved as we will need him to work his magic again. A new post shall follow soon. Thank you Nick and company for making the transition a quick and easy process.
"These are the stories that we always strive for! A great project for a family who needed a lot of help in getting the most bang for a buck. A very reasonable budget and as it was done in stages it made doing things more affordable. We look forward to more projects with this family."
We were designing a third bedroom/den to have a pull out couch and custom built-ins for additional storage. After meeting with Nick taking the dimensions of the room, Nick came back with intriguing designs and fabrics on paper. (almost 2 months later, but this was just the beginning). Once we approved the design, Nick brought the contractor into the picture and both came over to discuss all the designs of the room and took additional measurements and turn specific designs into reality in our tiny space. It all went down hill from here.
Nick sent us the custom built ins pictures from the contractors warehouse and saw many errors and changes to the original design and concept. Nick never caught the errors and thought it looked awesome. Not sure where all the miscommunication came from but things were built incorrectly or not built at all. Nick did not stand by his design and we were stuck with incorrect furniture as well as contractors having to rebuild furniture. The contractors did fix as many errors as they could to satisfy us, but Nick never advocated for us and stepped out of the picture a lot and made us deal with them directly, even though he was the designer and referral source. Nick charged us hourly for going to the warehouse and discussing measurements and design for multiple hours but still with multiple mistakes. Not sure what they ever discussed since it was WRONG. Examples, file drawers turned into open cubbies, decorative legs turned into square stubs, 3 cabinets tuned into 6 cabinets, TV stand was supposed to be a triangle corner unit turned into a larger rectangle piece. Nicks designs were not followed but Nick approved the final product and never discussed with us.
The main issue is that Nick has poor follow through with his designs, terrible communication skills with follow up and follow through. He is unprofessional and does not stand by his own work or advocate for his clients. He blames others for mistakes and it is never his fault.
He designed a window shade for us and all we paid for was labor. He had left over fabric of his own that he gave to us for free. When the shade arrived and installed it was too short. We confronted Nick about it and his response was ?that is what you get for a budget?.
The billing was a mess. After collecting his $750 deposit, it took him 5 months to give us a bill and ?make up? his hours for what it went toward. We paid him for time, but still had no room or products to show for it. Watch out for the billing. He bills 20 min meetings and calls it an hour. He bills meeting with contractors, but no idea what he discusses for multiple hours since the project was incorrect.
When it came down to design, I was the one that picked out all the fabric on my own, picked out my own couch and purchased my own couch, while he billed for time to look up couch options, when he ended up using my own choice and fabric anyway.
On a positive note, the room turned out functional and aesthetically pleasing. But to actually work with him on a professional level and have the design turn out correctly it was a true headache and gave us unnecessary stress.
"NJI is sorry to see this report. We believe that we went out of our way to support the needs of a project that involved many changes and adaptations. While we are pleased that the end result was functional and aesthetically pleasing, we regret that our customer was not completely satisfied. NJI is committed to delivering excellent results and, while the rare problem may occur, we will continue that commitment at every opportunity."
"This was such a fun project, new furniture, window treatments and a wonderful nursery. NJI was so glad to be a part of it. The space was transformed in a matter of months to a cohesive adult space. We at NJI look forward to another long standing relationship."
"$1500 covers the design fee for the wonderful work we did; labor and materials were extra. We had a great time getting this project designed and brought to reality. We look forward to a long relationship with this client."
"This was a strictly design only project with just ideas... a defined space and homeowners who had done some of there wish lists and research already. That makes it easy and fun..."
"All I can say... I wish this was my fireplace. HAHA... Its such fun and ying/yang..."
"This was a unique project for NJI, a deck with many challenges. I think it goes to show NJI can work on all projects and scales for any type of client."
"This was a unique project, going over a cement ceiling with a great post and beam sort of treatment. It was a great treatment for a challenging situation. Also a simple update to back-splash and added built-ins for storage and a great gel fireplace solution. Fun client and a great fun project! I look forward to working with her again soon!"
"We had a ton of fun on this project, great attitudes yield great results. We look forward to working with this client again!"
"A fantastic and quick update with lighting, moving furniture around and painting of a kitchen/dining/ foyer. The end result was much more the client and blended with her aesthetic. Always the goal at NJI. PS. NJI no longer uses the inflexible painter, and now has a staff of wonderfully skilled and friendly painters."
"Really a tough situation after a home fire, it turned out better than the original. Beautiful wood cabinets from a local vendor I use replaced the laminate, stone replaced the laminate counters, and gorgeous hardwoods and lighting completed the unique shape. We were able to take a small kitchen, make it bigger in feel and actual storage and even niche out a small powder room. I am happy to have my name on this project, and to have worked with these folks."
"As always we stand behind our quotes, and estimates of labor and service. The chairs were a leap of style for the customer and I just knew they would be wonderful! Glad they are happy."
"We also did fantastic window treatments and custom pillows and a roman shade. We touched every room in the house with some style."
"I especially loved this bath... Good raw space once we removed the dated sunken tub. Another typical NJI experience and a great repeat customer!"
"I guess you cannot make everyone happy. The client was not willing to listen to the information I gave him, nor was he willing to listen to the fact that I could help him with the work that was being done. (used all own sources, paid more in all but one case) I offered (4) bathroom designs and he was sure from the get-go of the cold lifeless aesthetic that he wanted. Which is fine, but then when you call a professional to offer services to ensure a space is warm and full of life then you need to be open. I will be the first to admit that he did have a laundry list of issues when planning this bath. I guess NJI is the scapegoat. The fact that all products were purchased independently and ultimately changed from the initial design is one single example. Nickolas John Interiors was not allowed to project manage or assist the client with the actual construction, as he was overly concerned with the "design fee" When the bath does not then look to standard set by NJI, I cannot take responsibility. I assure you NJI made amends on all obligations. I will also admit, that he is accurate, I did miss an appointment as I wrote it in my planner on the wrong day. This is not a standard NJI experience."
"A standard NJI experience with a great customer who was open to new ideas and an on-going long term relationship with NJI."
"A GREAT FUN YOUNG FAMILY WHO IS REALLY WORKING WITH THEIR BUDGET TO ACHIEVE A LOVELY HOME! I AM EXCITED TO BE INVOLVED IN THE UPCOMING PHASES."
"HE IS ACCURATE, NJI DOES NOT HAVE SPECIFIC LINES TO PUSH... I SELL AND RECOMMEND ONLY THE PRODUCTS THAT WILL FIT INTO YOUR BUDGET, LIFESTYLE, AND TASTE. A GREAT FAMILY TO WORK WITH IN A UNIQUE HOME!"
"SHE WAS IN A PINCH, GREAT TO WORK WITH AND RECEPTIVE TO IDEAS. NJI IS ALWAYS A CASUAL AND COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT, OPEN TO WORKING WITH YOU IN WHATEVER SCENARIO YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE."
"THIS WAS A FUN PROJECT TO PULL TOGETHER, IN THIS INSTANCE I GAVE THE HOMEOWNER IDEAS AND SHE WORKED ON HER OWN TO PULL IT TOGETHER. I HOPE IT TURNED OUT AND SHE WAS BRAVE ENOUGH TO PAINT HER WALLS A DEEP EMERALD GREEN! FUN CLIENT, FUN SPACE!"
