I brought my information over and had a long, confusion conversation with Kevin, after which he promised to have the taxes done the next day (which was Monday). The next day he sent an e-mail saying they would be available the night after. On Tuesday I stopped by and noticed some problems on the forms as prepared. He yakked forever about tangentially related things. I picked up the redone taxes and left signed copies in case they were done correctly, but I took until the following Tuesday to look them over since it was Easter and I went to visit family. On Tuesday it became clear that he had made clear errors in both the federal and Indiana returns, so I went back in and tried to get him to change things, but he kept saying it was fine as it was and he knows what he's doing; in fact he teaches MBAs to do taxes. I called the IRS and Indiana Dept. of Revenue the next day and confirmed that there were, in fact, grievous errors with both returns. (He was going to file both an IT-40 and an IT-40PNR, which would be like filing both a 1040A and a 1040. Just ridiculous stuff.) Since I had no expectation of ever getting him to do the taxes correctly, I went home and redid them myself, and mailed them Friday morning. The one benefit of going to him was that I now had all the forms laid out in front of me that I needed to use to figure depreciation and expenses on my rental property. That did help me some. On the other hand, I never did figure out whether I qualified for the saver's credit, so I didn't try to claim it. I guess it was unrealistic of me to expect my taxes done correctly for less than $200 in Chicago.
