Mahogany Builders recently gutted and rebuilt the 10’ 4” X 81 6” Master Bathroom in my condominium. If I had to do it over again, I would still hire Mahogany Builders without hesitation. With the exception of the shower glass, bathroom mirror and stone, all workers were employed by Mahogany Builders. Workers were on-site Monday – Friday 10 hours per day with the exception of Christmas week. The main folks assigned to my project were NOT working another project concurrently. I saw (and photographed) the progress that was made each day. All the people assigned to my project were professional and respectful. My new Master Bathroom is gorgeous and I LOVE it! If you would like more specifics about my experience with Mahogany Builders, please reach out to Mahogany Builders and ask for references. I have a more detailed review that is just too long to post.

We hired Mahogany Builders for the gut rehab of a bathroom: they took three months (more than double their estimate), charged us more than $55,000, and failed to deliver a properly working sink. That experience may help explain why this company is no longer in good standing in Illinois (as of November 1, 2019). When we contracted with Mahogany to remodel two bathrooms in our home, they projected the work would take 5-6 weeks. In fact, they took 14 weeks. They justified the delay by saying they were taking the extra time to deal with the structural and mechanical challenges of an old house. But even before we had our final meeting with them, one of the bathroom sinks began to back up, a problem we had never previously experienced in seven years of living here. Over the next six months, we sent them approximately six requests to fix the sink. In response, they acknowledged via email that they warrantied the drain, but their only response was to send a worker to pour chemicals down the line twice, though neither attempt solved the problem. When the sink finally became completely blocked and unusable, the company's president then disclaimed any responsibility, despite the delay they had previously blamed on addressing the preexisting situation, despite the warranty they had given, and despite the fact that the blockage turned out to be just below the sink’s drain. We ultimately had to hire our own plumber -- for substantial more sums of money -- to rod the line, then to open an adjoining wall and to cut into the pipe. The plumber found what he thought was grout or construction material blocking the line. It's not hard to see why Mahogany Builders fell out of good standing.
Response from Mahogany Builders
"Mahogany Builders’ contract was to remodel a bathroom and connect new plumbing fixtures to the existing drain lines. Mahogany was not contracted to replace drain lines. During the course of Mahogany’[Member Information Removed] work, areas where walls were opened and drain lines had been replaced were observed. This indicates past plumbing issues that could only be resolved by replacing pipes. Based on this and the observations made during the course of construction, Mahogany suggested, on multiple occasions, that additional drainlines should be replaced. The client chose not to contract Mahogany for this additional, recommended work. In regards to the inference that Mahogany was responsible for clogging pipes. In a December 27th email, the client first complimented the professionalism of Mahogany’[Member Information Removed] crew then later suggested the crew must have dumped construction debris down drainlines. This is simply not true. During the majority of the project, sinks, tubs and toilets were not connected and could not be used to dispose of debris. Furthermore, Mahogany caps and seals drainlines for sanitation reasons during the course of a project. Thus debris could not have been flushed down the drain. Lastly, at the completion of the project, all drains were working properly. Shortly after the client reported an issue with water not draining. Mahogany came back to address the issue. All the new fixtures and connections were found to be clear and the clog was determined to be further down a drain line. Still, out of good will, Mahogany returned a 3rd time and successfully unclogged that pipe. Mahogany completed the work it was contracted for in a professional and workman like manner. It stood by its work and went beyond expectations by unclogging a pipe it had not installed, and did so well after the project had been completed. Mahogany is simply not responsible for further issues with the existing plumbing."

Through no fault of the provider, we chose to not pursue any renovations.  It was a financial decision and is not reflective on the design concepts prepared by the provider.  Our interaction with them was limited to an in-home consultation and some conceptual design drawings.  The consultation was fine and they asked appropriate questions.  The drawings were so conceptual and we decided around the time of receipt to not pursue the renovations, so we cannot comment on their design capabilities.

Everyone at Mahogany Builders is extremely professional. It is refreshing to have a company do exactly what they promise from the beginning of gathering estimates to the completion of the project. We had multiple companies come out to scope the job and we ultimately chose Mahogany because of their customer service and proximity to our home. They do a good job of presenting the details of the project, time frame and budget so the surprises are minimal once the work starts. The various crews that came to our house were always on time and cleaned up after themselves before departing for the day. If a problem arose it was always addressed and resolved in a timely manner. We are extremely happy with the results and would not hesitate to use Mahogany again in the future.

At the recommendation of our designer, we hired Mahogany Builders to remodel our master bath.

We can't begin to express how pleased we are with their work.  The bathroom is beautiful, and the process was as painless as it could possibly have been.  The two-man crew was on-site daily for several weeks, as well as a construction supervisor, who visited as needed. They were meticulous in their work, paying close attention to details that I didn't even know to be concerned about.  They were kind and considerate, and did a wonderful job to keep the work area and our home as clean and tidy as possible.  Whenever there was a question or (minor) issue, we were consulted and the best solution was determined.

While they are not the least expensive builders, you get what you pay for.  All in all, we highly recommend Mahogany Builders.

I have a somewhat small bathroom and he did not have any creative ideas for me.
I had to call him, because he did not call when he said he would, and I was trying to be understanding, but it happened again.

We had our small kitchen remodeled. This was a total gut job, as this kitchen probably was remodeled last in the 1970s. There were a variety of hick-ups as there are with most projects of this volume. Some miscommunications between their suppliers, which caused delays and work stoppage. I felt some the little details slipped threw the cracks. And we didn't always get our questions answered. Final painting was a little sloppy.
Once done, we were mostly pleased with the end result. I would recommend Mahogany-- they might be perfect for your project. But we felt the final price went a bit over the top.

Matt and his crew are just the best. They actually did work for us in March and April, but I don't see that review here. Those months Matt selected colors for accent painting in the condo we were getting ready to put on the market. Then they came back and painted an office, as well as touching up other places that needed it. I've never seen touchup work done so seamlessly.
We credit this work with helping us sell our condo in two days for full price!
This most recent job involved Matt coming over to our new apartment and choosing colors and locations for accent walls. The painting was completed in less than a full day ... and, as always, beautifully done. These contractors always do a great job of cleaning up after themselves. Cannot recommend them more highly for any kind of remodeling project.

The repair of the drywall went well.  The workers were clean and tidy and the room looked fine when they were finished.  Then I had to move out for a week while they sanded the floors.  That's when the disaster started.
When I was given the all-clear to return to my condo I arrived on a chilly, stormy day to find that there was no heat or hot water in the unit.  Everything, and I mean everything, was covered with wood powder.  They had not covered any of the electronics they said they would cover.  My printer, TV, music system, etc were all covered with a thick coating of wood powder.  I had taken the initiative to cover my clothes and bedding with plastic and pack up many other articles, and they too were heavily covered with the dust.  My belongings were strewn all over the unit.  There was no effort to replace furniture to the places they occupied before the sanding.  The toilet the workman/men had used was filthy.  It was a nightmare.  Mahogany didn't have a professional clean-up crew in their employ but did send two women who did the best they could remove the powder.  I had to take a day off work to supervise them and help with the effort.
When it came time to paint the baseboards which were discolored by the sanding, they did such an abysmal job the first day I fired them and hired my own painter to complete the work.
Summary:  I would not hire Mahogany for any work in the future.

After some initial communication issues around scheduling, the crew showed up on time, working efficiently but with good craftsmanship, and came in under budget. I appreciated that they wanted to do the job right, fixing a problem with pipe routing that would have created more leaks and damage in the future. At one point, they thought they could fix the problem without replacing the tub... while that turned out not to be the case, I appreciate that they were looking for alternative solutions to the problem (leak through the ceiling below) vs. just getting a job done mindlessly.

They were very clean and neat. They cleaned up every day and  I appreciated  the bathroom. The result was outstanding and top quality. They were super responsive to all of the items that we had, like, to follow up stuff. The only complain was, it took longer than I thought it would. But it is probably remodeling. It takes longer usually.

AO Smith referred me to Reeder for warranty work on my hot water heater.  I had two visits, first to diagnose the problem then to replace a valve that they special ordered.  Both guys that showed up were very knowledgable and willing to answer my questions unrelated to the problem at hand.  Easy to work with.

We recently chose Mahogany Builders to do a complete remodeling of our master bath and we couldn't be more pleased with our choice. Matt and his staff were professional from our initial interview to their follow up on the last detail. We we were impressed with the quality of work, the attention to detail, the communication and the reliability. Matt and his assistant were very responsive to our questions and were often on site to observe the progress first hand. The workmen were not only highly skilled at their jobs, they were amazingly neat. They cleaned and straightened up at the end of every work day. Non work areas were well protected from traffic and dust. We had complete trust in all of the staff and did not hesitate to give them keys for access when we were not available. We have already recommended them to friends who are considering projects and would definitely us them for future projects of our own. Our thanks to the entire crew for a job well done.

Matt Lederer from Mahogany worked with me very closely throughout the whole project and went through in great detail every bill to make sure I understood ever charge.  I had a very specific format for my Scope of Work and he tailored his bills to fit that.  Matt's team was great - especially Mitch and Jerry - and they completed the project within a few weeks of the original deadline (which, in all fairness, the delay was largely due to the scope changes my wife and I asked for throughout).  While the project did run north of $100,000, we could not have been more thrilled with the quality of the work and the attitudes of the guys who worked on the project.
As my wife has some peculiar taste, we really felt that Matt, Mitch and Jerry were interested in making sure we were able to fully realize the vision my wife had for the space.  They gave us great feedback throughout and Mahogany's decorator, Sarah, helped us make some key decisions on accents that we had not realized were necessary (this is our first house).
One final testament of Mahogany's commitment to customer service is that any issues that have happened since we moved in this spring, he makes sure someone comes out and fixes it immediately.  (The only issues we've had was a very minor leak in our garbage disposal that they installed and a few can lights in the living room they installed stopped working).
I have already recommended Mahogany to friends and colleagues.

It cost us $50000 for the job. What we liked the most was that the workers that they sent were absolutely excellent workers. They worked really hard and did beautiful work. The fellow that runs the company and everybody in the company was very nice, very good and easy to work with. Sometimes, there were communication issues. I would recommend them to others. If needed, I would use them again.

They did high quality work and I had a very positive experience with them. They came out and investigated. One of the works was custom installation. The owner came out to just to check and make sure that we were getting what we asked for and he was a little attentive. It was a really good quality work.

I have heard so many horror stories about having kitchens and bathrooms torn apart that I was almost prepared to move to a hotel while this was going on. But, this was practically painless. They did their best to minimize the disruption to our lives. They kept the place spotless. We never did a lick of moving things, to the point that I felt guilty sometimes when the guys came in and started cleaning off the kitchen cabinets so they could paint.

They were so punctual that we would see them sitting in their truck waiting for it to be 7 am so they could ring the bell. The nice thing about Mahogany is that they have the painters, plumbers, carpenters and people needed on staff. So, there's no waiting for someone to be available when the work needs to get done. I've never seen such organization.

In trying to fix a leak in the downstairs bathroom ceiling, they had to tear out some tiles in the guest bathroom. That meant trying to match 20 year old tiles or retiling an entire bathtub area. I am amazed at how many places the project manager Sarah went to find matching tiles and finally did, saving us a boatload. Even with all of this extra plumbing, tiling and research work to find the tiles, our final bill was only $300 over the estimate. That also included painting a room not included on the original estimate.

They were A overall. They are really meticulous. They give an itemized estimate and statement telling what is that you want to be done and what it would cost. They do what they say would do and come when they say they are going to come. They are extremely clean. They always clean up after themselves perfectly. They are talented and meticulous. They are expensive for handyman services. Everything is great about them except their price. I will use them for contracting services but not for handyman service.

Mahogany's work exceeded our expectations. We couldn't be happier with the end result, and the process for getting there was painless as well. Matt and Paul spent a significant amount of time planning the project with us upfront. They were very consultative and helped us understand the pros and cons of various approaches. The upfront planning paid off as the project was completed on time and on budget, and there isn't anything we would have done differently. Paul came to our house every day to review the progress and make sure the work team had all of the materials they needed. The work team arrived on time and put in a full day of work every day. They were friendly, courteous and professional. It was obvious that they took pride in their work, and while they were extremely efficient, they took the time needed for a high quality end product. We used Mahogany previously to add a bathroom on our first floor and were pleased with that work as well. I'm totally sold on Mahogany and wouldn't hesitate to use them for future projects.

The amount above is an approximate total for the project; I paid about $27,000 to Mahogany; I have an enormous kitchen, and it is a top-of-the-line project. Mahogany Buildiers did an amazing job throughout. This remodel started with a small water leak under the main sink while we were out of town. The water damaged our hardwood floors; they warped and damaged our center island. We decided it was time to just redo the entire kitchen, a project we were planning in a few years anyway. Sarah Nettle of Mahogany guided me through design choices at Spaces and Views, Waterworks, Abt Appliance, Clark & Barlow Hardware, and GP Stone. We started with repairing the floor, replacing the warped boards; while waiting for the ordered materials to arrive, I was able to live with a partial kitchen, which anyone who has been without a kitchen for a complete remodel can really appreciate! Once the cabinets arrived, Mahogany stepped into high gear. The old kitchen was demolished; they moved furniture so my floors could be refinished from the tv area off the kitchen, through the kitchen, and into the dining room. Then the new cabinets were set in. Everything flowed on schedule. When we realized that the new cabinets were a bit deeper than the old, meaning the cabinet crown molding wouldn't fit neatly on the soffit, they rebuilt the soffit-- this is such a seamless build you would never know it was done if you hadn't seen it being built. Crown molding replaced, paint applied-- all part of the cabinet installation! The island was a particular challenge, 5 feet by 10 feet, with columns in the corners-- some of this needed to be custom altered on the spot, and Mahogany did this seamlessly as well. I wanted the leaded glass from my old cabinets reused in the new, and they safely removed the panes and installed them into the new cabinet doors. Over the 2 months of the project, from the first day removing cabinets to the final day of cleaning and moving furniture back, Mahogany arrived each morning on time at 8 a.m., and worked until 5. Each day they ended with tools neatly stacked and debris cleaned up. My newly finished floors were protected with paper and boards throughout the project. The guys were good about asking guidance and letting me know what was planned for each day. And they got along with my two Siberian Huskies, to the point that the dogs asked them when they needed to go out! I live in a 46-unit vintage building; there is always work being done here by a variety of contractors. The building manager, engineer, custodian, and doormen all have commented on the professional way Mahogany works in the building. They even vacuum the service elevator--definitely a point-winner when you live in a communal setting! The building manager has gone so far to say they are among the best to work in the building. In the end I have an amazing kitchen having suffered a minimum of disruption. I will be talking to Mahogany about redoing my master bath soon!
