JG CONSTRUCTION & ROOFING

I received multiple bids and went with Marek since he had done a great job on my roof the previous year. He came out to fix a problem with some gutter work that was done with the roof and an issue had come up with the first snow. He fixed that as well. The only drawback of the experience was that it took a few too many calls to get him back in touch. Perhaps because I initially wanted him to come out for the new gutter bid which might have been too small a job on his plate with roofing gigs to get or do, but then he did return my call when I mentioned the problem with the previous gutter work.

I called JG Construction & Roofing on Monday morning, and by noon on Monday John had come and provided a verbal estimate. John was professional and through, and the only one of 3 contractors to actually climb up on the roof. I liked him. His price was right. (Not the low bid, but at the bottom end). He could do the work fairly soon. Everything sounded great. I would absolutely have hired him but for one glaring issue: best I can tell, he isn't licensed.

I was unable to find any record of a Chicago home repair license, Chicago general contractor license, or Illinois roofer license. As a result, I've gone with another contractor who has all of his licenses in order. I would reconsider JG for future work if this were remedied.

In summer of 2010 I received many bids from roofers recommended on Angie's List. I went with Janusz for three reasons - he had the best price by far, he offered to do the most work (there was a split in bid suggestions where a large group suggested taking down the dormers' siding to best protect the roof with ice/water shield and he was in this camp, but did not charge a large amount to do it this way), and I trusted his no-nonsense demeanor where he was clear how long I'd have to wait for the job to begin and how long it would take. Unfortunately the day before he was to begin the job a neighbor refused to do what every bid required -- which was to allow the roofers to protect their lower and super-close roof in case of an accident. Not surprisingly Januscz begged off from the job until the neighbor came to her senses. So I went the winter with  leaks and re-approached many of the bidders in the Spring 2011 with the new facts of the situation. Many made promises they backed out of the day before the job and others made promises over the phone and then changed their minds or didn't call back after further inspection. I feared I would have to take legal action with my neighbor. I made one last attempt with Januscz and he came out and decided to tackle the job in a new way to avoid dealing with the neighbor that no other roofer had suggested and added a very reasonable extra charge for the amount of days it would add to the job. He also discovered problems with my gutters that other roofers had discovered but suggested (I believe) the wrong solution. So some gutter work was added to the job at a very reasonable rate and the job was methodically completed over 3 days (due to the extra care needed because of the neighbor). Janusz and his partner, Marek Krzem, kept me informed along the way and kept to their schedule. And when my properly working gutters were suddenly showing issues in previously misused downspouts they were out within the day to fix those with no extra charge.

Spoke with John, had an estimate, and commissioned him a month later. Price was great, service was top notch, and the completed our roofin project in one day. Would refer to any friends, in fact, I already have.

Called John for an estimate as a result of seeing his work the previous year on a neighbor's house. We had roofers coming out of the woodwork promising to work with the insurance companies and saying the insurance premium would not be reaised. It was like the zoo had released all the inmates. I call ed John and he came out the next day and explained what would be doing. He was well under another estimate that I had to wait 2 weeks for and was much higher than John's. In talking with him he included reroofing the shed and cleaning the gutters. We scheduled the work for after the Memorial Day holiday and they were on time. Covered bushes and made sure the house was protedted while they were removing the old roof. Was extremely pleased with the workmanship and care his workers took in cleaning up whan they were finished.

Firstly, I'd like to preface my eval. by saying that it is baised on the events that I have experienced to date. The work preformed has an estimated expected use of 15 years which I cannot predict. I called JG Construction, left a message and received a return call the next day. The following day Janusz, (company's owner), inspected my roof and gave me a no non-sense quote. I was so impressed with what he had said, that I signed a contract and made a deposit on the spot. I'm not usually so trusting of a person I just met but I kept in mind what I had read in the other evaluations on Angie's list and combined it with Janusz's professional take on what needed to be done. Folks I tell you no lie, the man kept his end of the bargain, to the letter, without skipping a beat. I never had an experience like this before; he is good! Its every bit as true as I had read in the other customer's comments and now its my turn to pass on the word. Hire this guy, you won't be sorry. p.s. "Thank you Angie!"

I left a message at the listed number and the owner contacted me the same day. He came out to do an estimate the next day and his price was approximately 70% of the next lowest estimate. We then scheduled to do the work the following week. The owner and his crew showed up ontime and completed everything in approximately 5 hours.

We faxed John a diagram and description of the problem: a roof leak that caused water to enter an upstairs bedroom window. He called us next day and made appointment to see us the following day. He arrived on time and crawled around in our attic to review the problem. He clearly explained the pros and cons of a repair vs. a complete roof replacement. Due to the age of the roof we opted to go with a complete replacement on the house as well as our garage which was clearly deteriorating. His price quote was fair and he promised to finish the work in one day. His team worked nonstop and carefully protected our yard and neighbor's property. They carefully removed old roofing material to a dumpster next to our house, trimmed tree branches as necessary to allow a clear path for material removal to the dumpster (they needed trimming anyway), replaced roof vents with new ones and closed up unnecessary vent holes. They cleaned up well after the job was finished. John's manner is very professional and he is highly communicative, patient and thorough. His crew is experienced. There were no shocks or surprises. I would hire him again and recommend his services without hesitation.

Great, no hitches. He inspired trust from the start.

THE OWNER, JOHN, WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL AND A NO-NONSENSE TYPE OF GUY. HE GAVE US A QUOTE THE SAME DAY THAT HE CAME TO LOOK AT OUR ROOF. WHEN WE CONTACTED HIM TO DO THE WORK, HE CAME BY WITH SHINGLE SAMPLES. WE AGREED ON A START DATE, THEN JOHN AND HIS CREW WENT TO WORK. THEY WERE ON TIME EACH DAY, AND CLEANED UP VERY WELL WHEN THEY WERE FINISHED. THEY WERE VERY CAREFUL WITH OUR NEIGHBORS HOUSES, PROTECTING WINDOWS, SHRUBS, ETC. THE WORK WAS COMPLETED ON TIME, WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. THE ENTIRE PROCESS WENT VERY SMOOTHLY. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND JG CONSTRUCTION!
