I learned about Mr. Smith through word of mouth. Mr. Smith is known in Evanston as a plant expert with unsurpassed knowledge of the local flora, soil requirements, plant diseases etc. He has been in charge of various city park plant installations. Last year I had planted 17 arborvitae, of which 5 died and an additional number where beginning to show rust colored needles as well. This was my primary reason for consulting him on Aug 9. In addition I wanted to get a quote for a landscape design of the front yard. Charles came the same day and examined the arborvitae. He was extremely excited about the prospect of designing a front yard and potentially installing it. The next week he presented me with a proposal and a catalog with pictures of the plants, shrubs. Flowers he suggested we'd use. He also provided a quote, which, frankly, I thought was high. However, having talked with him for a few hours, I was convinced about Mr. Smith's expertise, his genuine interest and love for landscaping, his dedication to quality work and his enthusiasm for the work. I figured that the end results would ultimately be worth the price. Mr. Smith started the project the next day. He did all the work himself, hired the tree company to remove the crab apple and the taxi and to remove the stumps. For tilling the soil he had help for 1 day from one man. He hauled all the plants and shrubs from various nurseries in northern and western Illinois and planted them as per agreement. The work was completed in 7 working days, including time for hauling the plants. Mr. Smith continues to stop by on a daily basis, inspecting both the front and the back yard and watering the plants. As the fall will progress he will provide guidance about the required pruning prior to the winter season. Mr. Smith inspired confidence and turned out to be a sociable individual who enjoys a discussion about various general, societal, or botanic topics. I am eagerly looking forward to next year's blooming season to assess the ultimate outcome of my investment. As for Mr. Smith, I can highly recommend him to anyone who has lost confidence in large, impersonal landscaping companies.
