Joan was on time for appointments. Provided a thorough presentation of options. Provided several samples and cost variations. The estimates were thorough with pricing and what was included. Great follow up after our meeting and great at keeping me up to date on status of project. Even came the day of the install and made sure everything was okay. Wonderful experience.

Although we did not work directly with Chicago Feng Shui, we worked with Joan Kaufman. As we researched Chicago Feng Shui we noted that Joan also operates Interior Planning & Design. We contracted with IPD. Overall we had a very poor experience with Joan. Throughout the engagement we were dissatisfied with the poor communication and lack of focus. In our opinion we felt that Joan was more interested in working with her suppliers. For example, we found lamps at Toms Price which were on sale but she indicated it would be better for her if we placed the order through her supplier. (There was no difference in price between Toms Price and her supplier.) We also selected bathroom plumbing supplies on our own and gave the parts list only (no prices) to suppliers we worked with in the past in order to get a comparative bid. We told Joan that we would want to do this before we entered into a contract and she said she was flexible. We invited Joan to obtain quotes from her suppliers which she said she would try to do. After we terminated our contract with her, she accused us of being unethical in seeking this type of bid. We worked with Joan for 2 months and then received our first bill on May 27th. We were surprised that all but 7 hours of our package had been used and we had not yet been to any showrooms with her except for Toms Price. In our minds we still had a lot of work to do. We should have ended the contract then and there, but after an hour long telephone conversation, we decided to continue. A few phone calls later we decided she wasn't a fit for us. On June 17th we terminated our agreement. Once we terminated our contract we made several attempts over the course of a month to pay the final invoice. We offered for her to come to our home and receive the payment in person once she returned our armchair covers that she used as fabric samples. She did not want to do this. Instead, we mailed a check to her immediately after we received our fabric samples from her. Then she told us she never received our check, so we issued a stop payment with our bank. Then we issued a cashier's check through FedEx with a direct signature required. She cashed that check on July 7th. All during this 5 week period she demanded late fees, told us she planned to check our credit rating, and that her attorney would be in contact with us. Angie's List exists so that customers can share their experiences - good and bad. We experienced very poor customer service and would not do business with this firm again. We have noted the response to our review which has quite a bit of misinformation, and is further evidence of the unprofessional treatment we have had working with Joan.

Joan brought paint samples for living room and dining room after inquiring what my preferences were, and brought samples of blinds as well. We went through color choices in both rooms and determined what walls should be accent walls, one of my interests. We went over new items in my house that I could use. Reviewed slate and wood floors.
Joan was axcessible and responsive. I would call Joan again in a heart beat.

She was offering a deal so I hired her to come out. I don't think she prepared me well enough and I wish she was more clear about what was expected from the customer. I don't think she was well prepared either. She required more time for what I needed which meant more money than I was willing to spend.

I am sorry to hear you did not like the price for the three hour package. The coupon purchased was for 3 hours of design time for the price of two-$199. We accomplished selecting the paint colors for your family room and adjacent first floor areas, and I created the floor plan and followed up with the notes from our meeting. These are the things we discussed prior to meeting and that I was asked to complete for you, and felt we would be able to do in three hours: 1. choosing paint colors for the kitchen and family room which flow into each other. 2. Suggest a layout for the family room. I also sent you some ideas for chairs and drew a sketch of how you could do a bench seat at the window and some ideas for bookcases at the fireplace area. I wish I had heard back from you , so I could have answered any questions or assisted you further-I did not know you needed something else! I did not charge anything additional from the coupon, and I helped you as much as I could for that price-we actually spent more than three hours at our meeting plus the the time before and after; I simply was not able to give even more time without you purchasing another coupon. I arrived prepared for our meeting after reviewing your photos and preparing a floor plan and checked the dimensions when I met with you. I provided you with the final plan. I brought large sized paint samples for us to work with at our meeting, and we finalized the paint color together. I left you with large samples for you to keep. In order to accomplish selecting paints with clients, it is important to be in the space with the client and see the colors in the lighting of that space. While I am able to pre-select some colors, it is typically necessary to make the selections on site. I also sent you some ideas for chairs and drew a sketch of how you could do a bench seat at the window and some ideas for bookcases at the fireplace area."

I told Joan that I had not decorated my house or used a decorator before. We walked through the entire house and discussed different options while I took notes. It snowed that morning and she called ahead to let me know she might be running late. I thought she came on time and I really appreciated that she notified me. She gave me helpful ideas for each room and I really like her suggestions. She was concerned about the budget and made sure to ask how much I wanted to spend on each room. She was also willing to use some of the pieces I had in my home as a part of the design. She helped me in a tactful way and spent about two and half hours discussing things with me. She kept her own notes of what we discussed and was very interested incorporating both my ideas and hers into the plans. She sent me a follow up email and even a two page summary of the design. I was pleased with the service. She was very knowledgeable, professional, and responsive.

It worked out really excellently. We were having a lot of issues with the closing and getting in date and I was only going to have a week to turn around between when I close and when I actually needed to move in. So, any advice around the Feng Shui and the decorating had to happen before I could even get into this place. So, the woman from the company helped me without even going to this place. I sent her photographs and we had different conversations about color, placement, paint and tiles. She sent me swatches so I was able to get the tile person lined up and the painting person lined up. So on the day that I closed, they walked in and we had already figured out paint colors and accent colors. They were just able to execute on the plan that we had worked on over the phone. She sent me a detailed set of suggestions for each of the rooms and so it was great. I waited to use them a little while because the original place that I was going to use batched all through. I only paid for the big deal and there were no extra charges. It was a great experience. She really went above and beyond. I would absolutely use her again in the future and recommend her to others.

Overall I was disappointed. Joan is a very nice person and showed up on time but based on several reviews that I read on Angie's website, I thought this Decorator would address my biggest challenge re my sectional and guide me as to what types of colors/fabrics are safe to pursue without being trendy. I also looked forward to her knowledge of Feng Shui and possible changes in my current floor plan to create harmony. She didn't mention this until I asked about it. The offer was $199 for 3 hours. She spent 2 hrs. with me and said I could use the additional hour any way I choose as in possibly going with me to select sofa fabrics. I know for a fact that it's virtually impossible to select fabrics in an hour and I really can't afford to pay for additional time. I never worked with a decorator before so perhaps I expected more than is reasonable. It seems to me, however, that if I knew what I wanted I would not need to hire someone for ideas.

"The most successful way for a consultation such as this is for me to understand what you are looking for and to be able to bring samples to you. Prior to our meeting, you were not able to offer any photographs of your space or to express what you would like to accomplish. At our meeting which was over 3 hours we reviewed your thoughts, re-arranged furniture and selected some color palettes including paint colors. I offered to meet with you again to help you complete the work because I was not able to bring you samples to our meeting without having some idea what you wanted in advance. I dropped off carpet and fabric samples to you for your review in addition to that as a follow up. You are more than welcome to visit our studio where we have numerous samples to choose from. I also offered to meet you at the store you wanted to purchase your flooring from in Orland Park. All told, I invested much more than three hours and was willing to assist you further."

See above. The discussion went well, she submitted a written list of suggestions and allowed me to take notes. The service was as expected. She was prompt, professional and helpful. I would use this company again if I needed these services and may, in fact, use her help in the area of interior design.

Her consultation with us went really well. I learned a lot from her (I am design challenged) and she had lots of great ideas. I paid $199 for a 3 hour consultation. There was a little time left over so she is going to get back to me about a couple of things (fabric, resources, etc.) for no charge. I look forward to working with her on a continual basis on putting together a wonderful living environment.

I purchased a Big Deal for $99 for a 90-minute design consultation in my home. The designer missed our first appointment because she was running late from another appointment and I was on a tight schedule. She was prompt and courteous for the second appointment. I appreciated her help thinking through our space challenges. She came up with a solution that I hadn't thought of. Her follow-up email was a little perfunctory, but she spent extra time with me during the consultation so I believe I got what I paid for. She is very focused on the feng shui principles, so if that's what you're looking for she might be a good fit.

We went with her design in the kitchen and the cabinets did not fit. The granite was purchased through her and the granite layers smashed one of our new cabinets and we were not reimbursed. After sending pictures of the cabinet to Joan on 4 separate occasions after 6 weeks of no response, I sent her an email indicating my lack of satisfaciton in her services. I received a very hostile phone call from her indicating she was shocked by my email. Then after telling her I didn't appreciate her call I received an email telling me I was hostile and I was confusing professionalism with someone that wouldn't tolerate abuse from me. I do not recommend this company for anyone - whether it's picking out the color of your toilet paper or an interior design plan.

"Dear [Member name removed], I am very disappointed to hear you are unhappy. We worked with you and your husband to create a beautiful space. The kitchen cabinets were not provided by us. Although we did drawings and submitted detailed specifications, you ordered form another supplier out of state. I visited the project several times when your husband was installing the cabinets and assisted in answering as many questions as possible. At that time, we discovered the model numbers of some of the cabinets ordered were not the same as what we had proposed and are not the same size as what we specified. I showed this to your husband on site. The cabinets are not the same model numbers or sizes that we quoted in our proposal. I do not know what the other company quoted you or if they also did a drawing for you. The granite company nicked one of the cabinets when trying to tilt the granite into the corner sink area. The cabinet was not “smashed”. There was a ding on the lower underneath portion of the front rail. They immediately indeed took care of the cabinets. The same day, when your husband was there, (I was there at the installation also) we arranged to have the owner come to your home. Salvadore, the owner of Classico Marble, came to your home and brought a cabinet restoration person who repaired the cabinet. Your husband was there and accepted the work and signed off that the repair looked good! Over a week later, you called and yelled at me insisting we needed to replace the kitchen cabinets. I was very polite to you in all my communications. Both Salvadore and I phoned you to talk about the cabinet. The repair looked wonderful and it is not possible to see any mark. The matter was resolved in a reasonable way. Thank you,"

Joan Kaufman arrived promptly at the appointment time. She spent time talking with me to find out what I wanted. She then did a number of measurements and diagrams for her research. She indicated that she did not charge for her measurement time so I have some time left from my initial 90 minute purchase.
We will be getting back together to discuss her findings and ideas.
I was very pleased with our meeting and look forward to the next phase.

Joan Kaufman was amazing!! I knew NOTHING about redecorating. She walked me through all my rooms and gave me great, honest ideas! She was aware of cost,and didn't try to push expensive renovations. Joan also indicated that she knew reliable contractors and would speak with them. She researched and mailed information about the jobs we discussed and called to make sure they came. Joan deserves an A+!!

I emailed Joan to set a time to have her come by to give me ideas for the finishing touch on my decorating project. I sent her pictures ahead of time and when met me had ideas and suggestions. We are still working on my project.

The first step was for my husband and I to complete a very comprehensive survey on our life and lifestyle. That alone was quite interesting, especially as we could only complete one questionnaire, but held differing opinions on many of the answers! We had never had a feng shui consultation and had no idea what would happen next, but we were intrigued by the questions.
Joan came fully prepared. It was clear that she had read and reflected on our questionnaire responses. We had a delightful, insightful conversation that focused primarily on what we liked/disliked about our home, our lifestyle, etc. Along the way Joan would explain a feng shui element or idea when it flowed into the conversation. But it was never a "lecture" -- just an addition to the conversation on our home and lifestyle. Joan was easy to be with and really made us think about how we used certain areas of our home. Afterward, Joan walked through our home and gave us immediate feedback on some easy changes we could make to create a more peaceful environment with positive energy, and spaces that felt more secure, serene and relaxed. We actually changed a few things immediately, and wrote down other ideas she suggested. We liked her guidance of doing one change at a time so we could see how the change worked in a particular area. Her focus was clearly on gradual change for the better -- not a massive overhaul of our entire space.
So despite being new to this process, it did not seem overwhelming or "mysterious" at all. It was fun, interesting and energizing. We continue to make small changes, then assess if the feeling changes for the better. Joan was really a joy and inspired us to continue further work with feng shui.

I reached a point in my life where I was ready to implement changes to create a healthier, happier and more beautiful home. I called Joan Kaufman for a consultation because she is an interior designer (ASID) and a certified Feng Shui practitioner (FSII). Joan came to our home and asked many questions. She listened carefully to my concerns and dreams for my family. She helped prioritize goals and translate them into solutions that fit our family's lifestyle and brought harmony into the home. Joan has the talent, ability and knowledge to walk into a room and purposefully rearrange furnishings and accessories to positively affect the environment. By shifting the energy of rooms, it empowered me to reflect on my life and make shifts for the better. Joan did as little or as much in the rooms as I requested. Right from the start, Joan was a pleasure to work with and I felt she cared about me as a person. A week after her first visit to our house, she sent me a comprehensive report listing objectives and solutions. She has come back a few times to monitor my progress and suggest further improvements. One can follow her report to make suggested improvements oneself or use her services to implement the recommendations. My closing comments ae that Joan gently guided me in the process of enhancing our home environmnt to make it more pleasing to the eye and spirit.
