My six-year-old $300 bookshelf combo radio/5-CD player/cassette player/recorder stopped working:  it would turn on, then turn itself off within seconds.  Internet and local electronic store browsing made it clear that I couldn't replace it with an equivalent system, and the manufacturer's online repair service was costly (and didn't seem all that reliable), so I decided to try to get it repaired locally, even if the cost was close to the original purchase price.  I dropped off the system at Anthony's Electronic Service the Thursday before July 4th weekend, telling Anthony I'd be willing to pay as much as $200 to repair the system.  He called back a few days after the holiday weekend to say that he'd diagnosed the problem and could repair it for $150, including parts & labor.  I said "fine, do it," and he said he'd order the parts.  To my surprise, he called back the next afternoon to say that the parts had arrived that morning and that the unit was working again and ready for pick up [courteously "warning" me in advance that he accepts only cash payments--a practice that isn't, I've learned, unusual among local repair shops].  He deducted $10 from the quoted $150 because I'd given him a copy of the $10 coupon posted on his website when I dropped off the unit.  Result:  I had the system set up and running again in just over a week after dropping it off for repair.

To some people, spending $140 to repair an "obsolete" system might seem foolish, but to me that's a better "investment" than spending hours converting cassettes and CD's to MP3 format.  If you share that opinion, and your "old faithful" tuner, cassette player, turntable, or CD player quits on you, try taking it to Anthony before "trashing" it.  He's affable and knowledgeable, and he charges a reasonable price for his service--a combination not all that easy to find among tech wizards!

He was great. He was on time, knowledgeable and got to the problem immediately. Within 10-15 minutes we had our results. We greatly appreciated the honest and friendly feedback that he gave.

Fine. My VCR had eaten a library tape. He quoted $10 to remove it and $60 to repair the VCR. The power source had finally died, which isn't inexpensive to replace. Since I could buy a new VCR for $50, I just had him remove the tape. He did a good job and was honest. I had to follow up with him to find out if the VCR and tape were ready even though he said he would call. I had a time constraint as needed to get the tape back to the library and he was aware of this. So his follow up could have been better. But he was fine in terms of service and did what he said he would do.

CAME OUT TO REPAIR THE TV. THE TV WAS NOT TURNING ON. HE SMELLED HORRIBLY. THE ENTIRE HOUSE SMELLED LIKE BODY ODOR FOR 3-4 HOURS AFTER HE LEFT. HE OPENED THE TV THEN HE TOLD US THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. HE THEN SAID THAT HE WOULD NEVER COME BACK TO OUR HOUSE AS IT WAS TOO FAR, AND WE DID NOT HAVE A PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THE TV WAS NOT WORKING, AND IT WORKS FINE EVER SINCE HE OPENED IT UP.
