On working with the team: All Marble and Granite is a husband and wife team, Nora and Constantin, with a small number of assistants who work with them as needed. I was struck right away by how quickly Nora responded to all of my queries. While other companies waited several days or a week to get back to me, and promised to call but then did not do so, Nora's
communication was prompt and reliable. I also loved that Constantin was involved in the job from start to finish. Many companies send out an expert to measure and complete the sale, but then have other less experienced staff do the
fabrication and installation. That can lead to misunderstandings and errors. I was thrilled that Constantin was involved in all of the work. Also, I insist on a lot of paperwork details - numerous amendments to the contract to clearly detail all the details of the work to be done and the contingencies in case something goes wrong, releases of lien at the time of final payment, etc.
One competitor flatly refused to do business with me because this made them nervous, and numerous companies were jittery and/or defensive during those conversations. Nora patiently talked through all of the items I raised, and we agreed on detailed language that protected both parties. I also liked that Constantin looked through my sketches of how to lay out the stone and pointed out that I should verify the dimensions given by the slab warehouse since slabs are generally not square - he was quite right and the layout I had in mind at that time did not work with the actual slab. It was clear from start to finish that both Nora and Constantin take a great deal of pride in their work and are willing to stand by it and ensure customer satisfaction and quality. I also felt that they truly cared about me and about my project.
On the difficulty of the work: All Marble and Granite fabricated kitchen countertops out of quartzite, a material that many firms refuse to work with at all due to its high price and its tendency to chip, and minimized the number of seams needed in two very large pieces in a way that two higher priced firms assured me was impossible. They fabricated vanity tops, hearth and mantel out of a quartzite that was even more delicate because it was only 2 cm thick. They took a piece of 2 cm thick onyx, cut out a hole for a tall narrow cabinet in it and installed it vertically over the fireplace. They hung four pieces of stone
overhead in the stairwell, on the fronts of ceiling soffits, and anchored them (so they would not fall on someone's head) ingeniously with screws attached to the back of the stone and by cutting out the drywall on the 2 sides so the
stone could rest on top of it. I also very much liked the way that All Marble and Granite templated all of the items
to be cut. Where other companies just used a laser or tap measure to measure the space, Constantin brought long thin
pieces of wood and attached them together to form a physical layout of the items to be cut. This allowed him to
definitively confirm he could bring the pieces of stone (that minimized the countertop seams) up the staircase - something other companies were unable to assess.
On price: All Marble and Granite's quote was the lowest I received from a company I felt confident
could do the work correctly. There were a couple of lower quotes, but one of the companies had reviews online indicating
they did not stand by their work, and the other's reputation on stone work was difficult to trace and their communication was not nearly as good as AMG's. Two other companies quoted higher prices, and insisted they could not get the
material up the staircase and/or install it safely with the small number of seams that All Marble and Granite delivered.
Not quite perfect: There were a couple of details
I wish had gone a bit more smoothly, but all concerns were ultimately resolved and the results are great. The details
that could have been smoother were all around disagreements on expectations - It took 2 weeks, which was longer than I expected, for the stone to be purchased and transported from the slab warehouse, but we had not discussed that timeframe. There were a couple of small chips in the stone already before All Marble and Granite received it that they did a great job of repairing, but only upon my finding the chips and requesting the repair (I would have preferred that it be done automatically). There was one spot where the countertop wrapped around a wall where there would not be tile above, and the edge was unfinished and left a small gap - I noticed in time, before the glue had dried, and they were able to move the slab over slightly so that the edge was embedded in the wall and no gap is present. We also had a bit of an argument before they agreed to clean some stains visible on the underside of the bar. The stains were on the stone already when they received it, but since they were visible and ugly when the countertop was seen from the stairwell, I would have preferred that they anticipate the need to clean them. I also wish they had taken more ownership over validating the preparedness of surfaces for installation - Constantin didn't want to take responsibility for verifying the leveling of the cabinets, though he eventually agreed to, but I felt that without him doing so I could be stuck between two companies pointing fingers at one another if the countertop cracked. There was also one small piece for one of the stairwells that was cut to match a crooked soffit when I would have much preferred to fix the soffit. We had a tense conversation because I insisted I would not pay the balance until the soffit piece was fixed (to ensure the fix would be done), and Constantin was afraid I did not intend to pay at all. In the end we worked it
out though, it was fixed, and the bill was paid, the job turned out great.
Also, even with the couple of tense conversations that we had when we disagreed, Constantin stayed friendly and helpful and caring afterwards, rather than becoming guarded or resentful. I appreciated that a lot, as I have found that many contractors get fatigued if a customer seems to be “too” picky / has a lot of details they want done differently. I felt that Constantin
had a very clear sense of honesty and integrity and would do what was necessary to fix something if he felt he had made a mistake, and was also willing to listen and negotiate a solution even when he did not agree with me.
I am thrilled that I hired All Marble and Granite. They did a great job completing all the work beautifully with delicate difficult to work with materials. They worked with me patiently to come up with a contract I felt comfortable with, they were responsive and
caring throughout, and they invested themselves in their work and fixed the small issues that arose to come up with a great end result. I have already recommended them to a couple of people since they completed the work in my home, and I now recommend them to you!
