Abel & Reddy Small Engine Repair

We were referred through Menards. Ronald Lyman blamed my husband and told him he burned up the engine. This was a new power wash that was used once and then broke. It was under manufacturer warranty but needed the gas out and something from him saying it was broken for Menards to return. He has hidden diagnostic fees of $40, no contract verbal or written for these fees. He did not tell us about the fees until we were ready to pick it up. I was under the impression that he was contracted through the company and that is how he is paid. He also told my husband that he didn't look how he sounded over the phone. My husband is from Mexico but has lived in the states for over 35+ years as a naturalized citizen. I am so sick and tired of the racism and people being taken advantage of! I have also complained to the BBB. We are taking the pressure washer back to Menards but because he was not willing to give us something that said it was defective we have to trade it for the same model. So we have paid $40 above the price. Ronald Lyman told my husband when he picked it up that he didn't listen just like his wife. He is very disrespectful. Then he tried to say he called the manufacturer and they were not familiar with the engine, that it was made in China dn told him not to get another one.

Everything done as expected. Picked up and delivered tractor on scheduled dates. Good service. Reasonable prices.

The repair went as scheduled. No problems.

Good work, good workman, good price. Took a long time to get my mower back, but I would note he pointed this out in advance. He estimated about a 5 week wait and I got it back in about 5 weeks. A good choice if you are able to think ahead.

Ron has always done a great job! One of my ridding mowers had a catastrophic engine failure, he got the repair covered under warranty. I took a weed eater to the shop. He showed me what the problem was. He ordered the parts need and I did the repair myself. He only charged me for the parts. He is picking up my ridding mower this week for repairs. He is an authorized repair shop for most small engines. Sometimes he is overloaded with work but from my experience is his estimates of when he will get the work done are accurate.

Took lawn mower out to his place (WAY West for me!) and left it. Called 6 days later and he said to pick it up the next day. Got it yesterday. Works well. Reasonable charge.

My lawn mower was acting up. Suddenly after having worked fine all summer it started to lose power and then regain it, and then lose
power again, making me think it would soon stop working altogether. This was a surprise because I have it maintained regularly. I managed to complete what I thought might be the last mow of the season, but then looked to find someone to
work on it. This was late in October. There was this new repair shop, Abel & Reddy, which was closer than the shop I usually use in Urbana, so I stupidly thought I?d give it a try.
Called the guy up and described the problem. He said he?d look at it and either fix it or at least sharpen the blades and change the oil.
He said he could get it done in a few days and I said no hurry, I didn?t think I would need it ?til the next week, if at all. His place had a sign up saying he specialized in my kind of mower. He said he?d call me and took my number. A week went by and he hadn?t called so I called him. He said that it had been done days before, so I went to pick it up and he said it was now running fine and charged
me about $50.
A couple of days later I pulled it out and started it up. After about a minute it was acting exactly the same as before. As far as I could tell he hadn?t even worked on it. I wrote him an email and told him I was taking it back. (We had to go out of town for a while first.) I didn?t mention that I was pretty annoyed. When I dropped it off, again he said he?d call when it was done
but, again, he didn?t. When I called instead he said he?d looked at it again and was sure it wasn?t the carburetor or the ignition, but thought it was a valve seat problem (whatever that is) that probably wasn?t worth fixing. He could try, but couldn?t guarantee anything. I was dreading having to buy another lawn mower as this one was less than 5 years old but thought I?d have someone
else give a second opinion.
I picked it up and said I?m taking it somewhere else thinking he might offer to give me a refund. But he didn?t and I guess that?s his right. But the first thought that went through my mind was that if someone else didn?t confirm his diagnosis, I was putting a negative review onto Angie?s List about his shop.
I then went to Illini Small Engine (aka Ron?s Mower Shop) out on Cunningham Ave behind Beck?s Country Shoppe in Urbana. I told them the long story and the guy there brought the lawn mower into his shop and started it up. Literally within 2 minutes he said he could smell what was wrong, that the gasket around the carburetor was broken and the machine was alternately flooding with gas and running out of it. He said he could have it fixed within the hour. My wife and I went for lunch and within an hour picked it up. He
charged less than Abel & Reddy and after taking my money mentioned that he thought I should ask the other guy for a refund. I said I?d rather take the hit but warn others of the other guy?s shoddy work.
The next day I mowed the lawn and the mower was as before, running fine and completely fixed. I?ll never go back to Abel and Reddy but heartily recommend Ron?s Mower Shop.

I left a message to get an estimate and Ron (the owner/operator) called back within a day.  We set a time for him to come and pick it up and he arrived as expected.  He gave me an estimate of when it would be done and it took longer than that but I wasn't in a big rush so that wasn't an issue.  The only thing I would have liked is if I'd gotten a call to let me know it was going to take longer than expected.  We set a time for him to drop it off and he arrived as expected.  The chute handle ended up being more work than I think he expected but he charged what he estimated even though it took much longer than he expected.  When he dropped it off, he had it started so I knew it was working.  He only charged $20 for the pick up and drop off and another $45 for the work so I was very pleased with the work and bill.  Will use Ron again for any small engine repair/maintenance I need.

Seemed to do a good job at a reasonable price. The work took too long, but I think there were extenuating circumstances. The shop is outside of town and a little hard to find. I would use them again.

The owner does all of his own work. He got the work done in the time period he specified, and we were happy with his work and his price. Our mower was extremely dirty inside and out. He did tell me that it was burning oil, and explained why. We may wind up having him rebuild the engine at some point.
We brought our mower to his shop and picked it up, but it looks as if he will pick up and deliver as well, if you have a riding mower.
His demeanor is a little gruff, but don't let that put you off. He does a good job.

He came out immediately and was very prompt. He was very knowledgeable and persistent to ensure he was able to fix the issue. He as very patient and thorough. He is customer service oriented and goes above and beyond. I would highly recommend him.

My Husquavarna riding mower with a Kohler 22 hp engine suddenly developed surging (governor hunting) during the first mowing this spring. Didn't find anything close on Angies List, so Googled 'small engine repair locally' and came up with a nice looking website for Abel and Reddy Small Engine Repair (a Briggs and Stratton Authorized Repair Station)only a couple of miles away, so on Saturday morning,drove out to take a look. Ron Lyman, the owner, came walking out of a large barn (his shop)past 10-15 various mowers ostensibly awaiting repair. I immediately wondered how fast the repair would be. I described my problem and asked if he could pick it up. He surprised me by saying he could, about 10:30am two days later. I drove away thinking sure...uh huh. He was 15 minutes EARLY! And the unit was delivered back just 7 days later. Great experience, and I will go back again.
