In the way of background, I purchased a home midyear 2015 that required some extensive remodeling and I have used Angie?s List to source multiple contractors over the last 6 months and have nothing but high praise for the quality of work; integrity; and value from each ? until my most recent experience with Glen Ellyn Storage. While I purchased the home back in June, I didn?t relocate until December 7th & 8th with Glen Ellyn. All indications during the sourcing process were positive from the online reviews to the series of interviews with the Sales Representative.
On December 3rd, 4th and 5th I reached out to the Sales Representative I had been dealing with and two ladies in the office to advise that that I may need some last minute support for packing. All three ? including the Sales Representative who stopped out to the house to see the extent of what was needed ? signaled that the request was small in the scheme of things given the number of movers that would be on the truck the day of the move. They did however indicate that because it was an hourly contract, there might be some additional hours to be billed ? which I understood. I should also add that the Sales Representative made multiple trips to the house with additional boxes for packing and did so very graciously. Unfortunately, it was downhill since that time.
When the movers arrived at the house on December 7th and saw that there were still items to be packed, they expressed concern. I advised him of my three previous conversations and his response: ?We don?t pack for local moves. The Salesman should know that we don?t pack for locals but they say anything to get the business.? Suffice to say the moving team was not happy.
In order to put into perspective, this represented my 13th move over the course of my career and in that time, I only had two pieces of furniture damaged and the moving company took ownership: no claims; no approvals needed to repair the damaged items; no third party adjusters involved; and both damaged items were resolved in a few days. Suffice to say that this was a very different and disappointing experience.
The Damaged Item List
· The Foyer Wall which ?had? a unique paint and plaster finish had a significant area that was damaged. When this was brought to the attention of the lead mover during the final inspection, he acknowledged that his team had damaged the wall BUT went on to add that if the plaster had been applied correctly, he wouldn?t have to deal with the current damage and proceeded to advise me how the plaster should have been applied. I should note here that the home is 34 years old ? with the original plaster ? and has stood the test of time up to this point.
· The Kenwood Turntable was literally destroyed: the turntable was disengaged; the arm broken; and diamond needle lost. It was an item that the movers packed and they literally ?stuffed? it in a box between other stereo components without any cushion.
· The refrigerator door was locked shut during the move and unavailable to use until a 3rd party came to the house to work on the door which I am now able to open it ? albeit, with a click and a hitch. And ? disappointingly ? put a damper on a family gathering over the holiday without the use of the refrigerator to store food.
· Multiple lamp shades were stacked in a box and torn beyond repair. One shade was part of a matched set and I have been advised by Glen Ellyn as follows: ?As for your claim to the 5th lamp shade, it is not considered a claimable item. Coverage does not extend to pairs and sets and cannot be compensated as such.? I have asked for a copy of the contract where this language appears and as yet have not received a response.
· I had a number of large pieces of exercise equipment that needed to be moved as a part of the relocation and Glen Ellyn advised that they work with a 3rd party to disassemble and reassemble the equipment. Glen Ellyn secured a bid of $500 and the final invoices came in at $665 ($305 + $360). $165 over the bid provided. Additionally, Glen Ellyn movers unloaded the piece of equipment and made no attempt to bring into the house stating that it would not ?fit? down the stairs ? so they left in the garage. When the 3rd party arrived to reassemble the equipment, they asked why the piece of equipment was still in the garage. I shared what the movers had told me. They advised that the piece of equipment was solid state and could not be disassembled any further. While they are not considered ?movers? ? the two men said that they would try to move themselves and ultimately, were able to do so. They were first class all the way.
· My business desk was put back together and not level making it difficult to work at until Glen Ellyn found the time to repair it. Again, a 3rd party came to the house and restored to the original condition.
I received an email from Glen Ellyn on January 2nd advising me that ?The balance of your claim will be settled this week.? As I write this note on January 10th ? no emails; no phone calls; no texts; and still no resolution.
In the interest of fairness and only presenting the facts, I have referenced email exchanges; dates from any phone calls; and my FILE NOTES prior to writing this review. The Glen Ellyn view of their performance: ?Your claim is being handled in a professional and expedited manner.? As a customer, I have a much different perspective.
As a final note, this week I am sharing this review with the Better Business Bureau and the State Attorney General in the hopes that this open issue get the proper attention.
"We are very sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant moving experience. All feedback is important to us as we are always looking to improve our performance. We would like to clarify some things that were mentioned in your review. The packing service is available on local moves and has been for the past 80 years. We will be interviewing the crew to find out more about that conversation and what occurred during your move. The original estimate given by the salesperson was for $4940.00. Even with the additional packing that was added the total of $4206.50 was still under the estimated amount. In regards to our response, our claims manager was in contact with you even responding to e-mails on Saturday, January 2nd a holiday weekend. In rare cases like yours where there is a claim on a local move, our goal is to have a resolution within 30 days from when the claim is received. This can vary with scheduling inspections and repairs. A claim settlement was sent on 1/11. Claims in the State of Illinois are given 90 days for settlement. Yours was settled in 25 days. We are sorry if your expectations were for a faster settlement."
"Thank you for the review. We are happy to know that you are pleased with our service. Best wishes to you in your new home!"
The delivery in CA was late in the day and chaotic. Item number discrepencies weren't properly resolved. I may have lost one box in the move. Furniture setup was only fair, partly because of inadequate identification of components during packing.
A major move is confusing and chaotic. It would have been better with a little more systematic approach by the movers. If I were to do this again, I would inventory and number each box that we packed. I would also consider doing all of the packing ourselves.
"Thank you for your feedback. First, we do apologize for the truck breakdown that is an unusual circumstance but gladly the truck arrived within the second day of your delivery window. We were unaware that you had any problems at delivery until today. Our office has no record of you contacting us after your delivery. Your file shows that a final walk through was done with the driver room by room and all inventories were checked off and signed. If you have identified a missing item, please let us or ADCO United know. We can initiate a trace and send you a claim form."
I really can't express in words how pleased we are with the entire company. From the first call to the last box moved they were fantastic!
Michelle came out, on time, and walked through each room to provide an accurate estimate. On move day, Mark brought the team of movers out and we walked through each room, with all the movers, and discussed what we wanted and were, etc... Our move was complicated because some things were being placed in the basement of the rental home for long-term storage, others were being moved to the first floor of the ranch home we are renting for a year. We had a ton of boxes.
The team of movers moved QUICKLY and with great care. They did not waste one minute of time, and busted their tails to ensure they met the estimated time. They came-in within 30 minutes of the estimated time, just outstanding!
They rate was very competitive and the service was superior.
You will be quite happy wit them....
"Thank you for review! We are happy to know you had a great experience with us. Good luck in your new home and please let us know if we can ever help you again!"
"Thank you for sharing your experience in moving with us! Best of luck to you in your new home."
I gathered quotes from several other providers who offered much lower prices but charged separately for all supplies. Additionally, Glen Ellynn's hourly price was seasonally higher. We chose Glen Ellyn because they were able to schedule on short notice, while most other movers were already booked for the day that worked best for us.
Mark and his team of movers were seasoned pros and handled our belongings with great care. Our phone estimate was too low due to my failure to mention a very long (time consuming) walk between the unit and the elevator, but Mark made a great effort to push the efficiency of his team to finish the move faster. This did not result in any damages to our property and we were amazed at how strong and gentle they were.
Definitely highly recommended if you have delicate or heirloom furniture.
"Thank you for your feedback. We make every attempt to be as accommodating as we possibly can. The best of luck to you in your new home!"
I have used their moving services before and was pleased. That is why I used them again this time.

A few months before our likely moving day, we were assigned to Michele, who came to our house and estimated costs. She also gave us pointers on how to keep the costs lower, and she helped us decide which items would be cheaper to leave behind. Over the next weeks Michele stayed in close contact with me, and was incredibly patient with my frequent phone calls and emails.
We decided to pack our thousands (no exaggeration) of books ourselves but to ask Mayflower to pack almost everything else. We got busy paring down our belongings--no need to pack and ship things we'd never use again, and after 25 years, there are a lot of things like that. A week or so before moving day, Michele came back, made the final estimate, and gave us dates for the packers and the moving van. She then turned us over to Bonnie, who verified times and made frequent phone checks to be sure things were progressing OK.
So, customer service A+. Fortunately the actual move was also A+. I'm not sure how many forests were destroyed to make the mountains of paper used to wrap our stuff, but absolutely nothing got broken. The way the packers loaded the boxes, nothing could possibly have broken even if they'd tossed the boxes out of second-story windows. And they labeled every box, so I had a pretty good idea of what I was unpacking at the other end.
The movers, like the packers, arrived right on time, and Steve, the driver, coordinated his teams with great efficiency. They had to load some of our stuff from our storage unit and some from our house, and then to unload some at a storage unit, some at our daughter's house, and some at our apartment. He managed to figure this all out, and everything got sent to the right place, which seemed to me like a minor miracle. We arrived just ahead of a snow-and-ice storm, and in Maryland that means everything shuts down. Steve nevertheless managed to unload the truck, and he stayed calm in spite of the fact that the storm cost him an extra day. He was a real treasure!
Selling a house and moving to a new place is an incredibly stressful experience, and I'm glad we went with a moving company that didn't add to the stress! Customer service, packing, loading, unloading, responsiveness, timeliness - everything (but the weather) went very well. I highly recommend Glen Ellyn Moving & Storage.
"[Member name removed], thank you for your review. We enjoyed working with you and wish you the best of luck in your new home!"
Overall the service was ok, with the exception of the items that didn?t get put together. They did have to come back out to take care of some things that weren?t done initially. It was a very long day but in the end I was satisfied with the service. However my point of contention was when they blew over the fact that they did not deliver my step stool. I had purchased a nice 4 step step stool, yet when I had submitted a claim form to the company, they declined it saying that I had left it. Everything was on the truck and they have not reimbursed me for this stool. They explain that I had not looked everywhere and the fact was that they had lost it as I know that it was on their truck.
"Although we have been in business for over 75 years, we are always interested in the quality of our work. We could not locate your file under the name . However [removed members name], Angie's List did provide us with the name that you moved under this morning and we have been able to look over the paperwork. We do a final walkthrough with each customer after the move to make sure there is no damage to your property and if so, it is noted. We only show one notation regarding a wall that our mover said was discussed with your husband prior to moving your sofa. Your salesperson did ask our claims department to send you a claim form so you could report any damage that occurred. Our records show that it was sent on October 7th and we have not received your claim form at this time. However, we are very interested in your comments. Please call our office at 630-543-0500 and ask to speak to our claims manager, Mike Fenwick he would like to hear more about your experience."
Their phone rep returned my calls quickly as we worked out details, and she did not try to sell me anything I didn't need. We also talked about our plans for a cross-country move next year, and she was knowledgeable and helpful in answering my questions.
The moving crew arrived on time and worked efficiently and quickly. The final cost was exactly as estimated.
We will definitely used Glen Ellyn Moving and Storage when it's time for our big move!
