Outstanding work by these expert by these tradesmen.
Wojtek is a super nice guy, his men were on-time, and their prices were the cheapest among our 4 vendor options. But 12 months after the job we have lots of regrets due to poor quality and lack of customer service - specifically the very poor application of floor sealant that has left us with noticeable warping throughout the home.
Details -
Out of the 4 contractors we initially screened, CMS was the most competitive on price. Wojtek was our main point of contact, and was extremely friendly and professional throughout. He first did the stairs himself, and did an outstanding job. The stairs were stained with a color of our choosing, and one year later have held up perfectly well. Totally satisfied with this job.
Next, we had him refinish our oak floors, asking that they be stained to match the coloring of the new stairs. Wojtek and team showed up on time after we moved our own furniture off of the floors to save the expense of having him do the work. It was a multi-day job, starting with sanding, then staining, and then finally the sealant. The first complaint we had was around the staining of the floors - which we clearly stated was to match the stairs. While they seem to have used the same stain color as on the stairs, the color was applied much, much lighter and Wojtek's men didn't seem interested in assessing whether the floors actually matched the stairs (by this time Wojtek himself wasn't showing up - it was just 2 of his men). Though the color wasn't a match to the stairs as we wanted, and though the depth of the stain varied noticeably from room to room, the floors did look nice overall. The men returned to apply the finish to the floor, and the job was done. We shook Wojtek's hand and thanked him for being pleasant to work with and for giving us floors that looked better than they had when he started.
In the 12 months since the floors were refinished, we have come to learn that the sealant they applied has been totally ineffective - they either applied it much too thinly or they applied too few coats (2). We have noticeable warping in 12-15 spots throughout the home where water, spills, and pet urine have seeped into the wood almost instantly upon hitting the floor. In many areas, the wood itself has discolored from moisture penetration. Realizing that these problems started appearing only AFTER the floors were refinished, I decided to call Wojtek and have him visit. He walked around and quickly dismissed the warping as "water damage," and I responded that I already knew it was water damage. Turning the discussion to the ineffective sealant he had placed onto wood, I shared that the same people and pets had lived in the house for 4 years before he came to do his work and that in that time there were zero instances warped wood from spills or accidents. Nothing in 4 years, then total damage in the 12 months since his reseal seems to be something more than coincidence. But, he was unmoved and said only that he wasn't around to see the old floors (so I guess he didn't believe me?) before suggesting I call my insurance company and try to make a storm/flood claim. (?)
So, in summary: we have nice looking floors that almost (but not quite) match the staircase we wanted and that are, for all practical purposes, unsealed against any kind of moisture. The floors will only deteriorate through time until we have them replaced. Now that the floors have warped in so many areas, we can't really do an effective buffing and reseal - we'd need to have the floors fully refinished again.
If you decide to go with CMS, be sure to hold them to your coloring choices and don't let them move on to the next phase unless it's right. And, above all, make sure you're comfortable that they'll apply your sealant heavily enough and with enough coats (we were promised 2 coats, which has turned out to be totally insufficient).
"We are sorry to hear your disappointment. When I was at your house, I saw that there were spots on the floor where the floor was probably wet for a little bit. Wood is a natural product therefore, it is very sensitive to water. There is nothing that will prevent damage to the floors. The finish will lift and the wood will raise the grain even if the wet spot is cleaned up immediately. We always put the same amount of sealer at every house, never too thin or too thick, We used the same stain color for the stairs as for the floors. The floor was already installed and different wood makes the stain look a little different on the wood. To satisfy you we can put on a another coat of finish. Thank you, Wojtek CMS Hardwood Flooring"
