I had a estimates from a few places to get the hardwood floors done in my townhome. I ended up choosing The Hardwood Floor Store. Their price was competitive, the mid point of all the estimates I received, about 10% cheaper than the highest option. I didn't choose them solely on this, but from reading reviews and experience.
At the time of the estimate, I showed Wayne a few places where there were issues, excessive splits, some water damaged areas, and cracked boards. I mentioned that I wanted these fixed, boards replaced as needed. We have maple floors, and there were some pretty worn areas as well as the earlier mentioned issues. We have a daughter who was on a ventilator, and the rolling stand wore out some areas pretty thoroughly. When I received the estimate, I didn't see anything about this repair, so I called prior to the work and stated that I wanted these areas fixed and not just covered up.
We scheduled the service and the crew arrived promptly, and did so everyday. They answered my questions about care and best ways to maintain the floor, very pleased with that. I knocked professionalism slightly due to them removing a screen and not replacing it, as well as seeing them toss the screen to the ground. Also, there was some smoking going on outside that would carry right into the house. I personally don't care if someone wants to smoke on break outside, perfectly OK to me. However, having the smell come in the house was unpleasant.
We paid for the dustless sanding system, which I would recommend. The heavy sanding was done on the first day, and then we came to the stain. We were shown a neutral stain, and then the neutral mixed slightly with a darker stain to give a little darker look. We liked the way the darker looked so went with that. Well, that was a mistake. Apparently, maple doesn't take stain very well, which is something we weren't told or told was a risk. When the stain dried, it was splotchy and looked bad. Also, it was worse at the edges near the walls, but not so much in the center of the room. I don't know if that means it wasn't applied well or what, but it looked bad. I called Wayne out and we discussed it and that is when he told me the issues with stain and maple. I would have appreciated knowing this earlier, as I would likely have chosen no stain.
Wayne agreed to re-sand the entire area and use only the neutral stain. I was fine with this and appreciated the effort to make it right and meet my satisfaction. The sanding this time around though, they did not use the dustless system, but covered everything. This is how I found out that using the dustless system is worth it. Even covered, everything was covered with sanding dust. Now, Wayne did say they could bring the dustless system out, but he said it was at another job site and that they wouldn't need to do heavy sanding the second time. The way I was asked and/or told made it obvious, at least to me, that he didn't want to bring it out. That was my mistake in letting that go. So, we paid $300 for the service and in the end, it didn't give us any benefit.
So, they resanded and applied the neutral stain and poly, and all that went smoothly. It ended up taking 5 days instead of 3, but I was OK with that since that time was needed to redo the area, which I was happy they did.
The issues I mentioned earlier, however, were not addressed. They just used filler for all the areas and while some areas look a little better, I was quite unhappy with this since I specifically mentioned these areas. All of the issues are present for the most part , and while the floors look nice, we know these areas could look better. Also, when discussing these issues, and the stain, it was always in such a way that either made me feel like it was my fault for choosing the darker color, or basically, that's just the way it is on some things, that there's nothing you could do. I know this is true because we've had this work done in the past and boards were replaced, areas fixed, and there were no signs that there were ever problems.
So, overall I am rating them a C. I wasn't happy with the quality of the work, but it is passable and as a whole the floors look fine. The price was fair, though I feel I overpaid since dust ended up everywhere anyway. They were punctual and courteous, with only a few issues that I mentioned.
I cannot give them a favorable recommendation and I hated to have to write this and be a bit negative, but it is fair and felt I needed to for the sake of the integrity of Angie's List.
