they ruined our living room floors due to the machine not working right. they also complained about the stain I wanted them to use (which other people had used in other rooms so i had no choice but to match). the stain turned out fine; why i had to put up with their complaining i have no idea. Also, I had them buff out old top coat and then reapply new top coat in kitchen. Two months later I have a spot that is ruined; I assume they completely missed a 1 foot by 2 foot spot on the floor. It literally looks like it has no top coat. AWFUL results. I would NEVER use them again.

Their machine created a wave in my floors. They had to redo everything. Also the new top coat in my kitchen is so much worse than our original. We now have scraps from chairs which we never used to get. I would never use this company again even though they made everything right in living room. Not worth the hassle getting everything redone twice. And the workers were rude. The manager was nice but he's not on the job.

I had a estimates from a few places to get the hardwood floors done in my townhome. I ended up choosing The Hardwood Floor Store. Their price was competitive, the mid point of all the estimates I received, about 10% cheaper than the highest option. I didn't choose them solely on this, but from reading reviews and experience.
At the time of the estimate, I showed Wayne a few places where there were issues, excessive splits, some water damaged areas, and cracked boards. I mentioned that I wanted these fixed, boards replaced as needed. We have maple floors, and there were some pretty worn areas as well as the earlier mentioned issues. We have a daughter who was on a ventilator, and the rolling stand wore out some areas pretty thoroughly. When I received the estimate, I didn't see anything about this repair, so I called prior to the work and stated that I wanted these areas fixed and not just covered up.
We scheduled the service and the crew arrived promptly, and did so everyday. They answered my questions about care and best ways to maintain the floor, very pleased with that. I knocked professionalism slightly due to them removing a screen and not replacing it, as well as seeing them toss the screen to the ground. Also, there was some smoking going on outside that would carry right into the house. I personally don't care if someone wants to smoke on break outside, perfectly OK to me. However, having the smell come in the house was unpleasant.
We paid for the dustless sanding system, which I would recommend. The heavy sanding was done on the first day, and then we came to the stain. We were shown a neutral stain, and then the neutral mixed slightly with a darker stain to give a little darker look. We liked the way the darker looked so went with that. Well, that was a mistake. Apparently, maple doesn't take stain very well, which is something we weren't told or told was a risk. When the stain dried, it was splotchy and looked bad. Also, it was worse at the edges near the walls, but not so much in the center of the room. I don't know if that means it wasn't applied well or what, but it looked bad. I called Wayne out and we discussed it and that is when he told me the issues with stain and maple. I would have appreciated knowing this earlier, as I would likely have chosen no stain.
Wayne agreed to re-sand the entire area and use only the neutral stain. I was fine with this and appreciated the effort to make it right and meet my satisfaction. The sanding this time around though, they did not use the dustless system, but covered everything. This is how I found out that using the dustless system is worth it. Even covered, everything was covered with sanding dust. Now, Wayne did say they could bring the dustless system out, but he said it was at another job site and that they wouldn't need to do heavy sanding the second time. The way I was asked and/or told made it obvious, at least to me, that he didn't want to bring it out. That was my mistake in letting that go. So, we paid $300 for the service and in the end, it didn't give us any benefit.
So, they resanded and applied the neutral stain and poly, and all that went smoothly. It ended up taking 5 days instead of 3, but I was OK with that since that time was needed to redo the area, which I was happy they did.
The issues I mentioned earlier, however, were not addressed. They just used filler for all the areas and while some areas look a little better, I was quite unhappy with this since I specifically mentioned these areas. All of the issues are present for the most part , and while the floors look nice, we know these areas could look better. Also, when discussing these issues, and the stain, it was always in such a way that either made me feel like it was my fault for choosing the darker color, or basically, that's just the way it is on some things, that there's nothing you could do. I know this is true because we've had this work done in the past and boards were replaced, areas fixed, and there were no signs that there were ever problems.
So, overall I am rating them a C. I wasn't happy with the quality of the work, but it is passable and as a whole the floors look fine. The price was fair, though I feel I overpaid since dust ended up everywhere anyway. They were punctual and courteous, with only a few issues that I mentioned.
I cannot give them a favorable recommendation and I hated to have to write this and be a bit negative, but it is fair and felt I needed to for the sake of the integrity of Angie's List.

The workmen were on site when promised, kept work area clean, and every thing went exactly as planned. The floors are beautiful! Nothing is perfect though, so being nitpicky, at the end of the work day, the workers did not take the refuse from the job with them.

They were very quick to respond to my phone call. Wayne came out same day for an estimate. Our floor was installed 17 years ago and is over 100 year old Virginia Heart Pine wide plank wood. It was difficult to find a company who wanted to give me an estimate. When I spoke with Wayne from The Hardwood Floor Store, he assured me that they had refinished similar floors and was very confident. They were very prompt and courteous. I felt the first coat of stain was not dark enough, and they returned the next day and applied another coat of stain before applying the finish. The floor turned out beautifully.
The reason I gave them a B for professionalism is that Wayne told me the machine they use removes most of the dust. In fact he said it takes care of about 95% of the dust. I found that not to be the case. The stainless appliances, countertops, baseboard, light fixtures, fireplace coated in dust. I did have to have someone clean after completion of the project. In retrospect, I would have paid the extra $300 to have the dustless system.

I can't begin to say enough about the responsiveness and professionalism of all of the people that we dealt with. Don responded to our call within 24 hours and came out to our home within the week to provide us with an estimate. Since we were uncertain what condition the floors would be in once the carpets were removed, he provided us with several different options that we could decide upon once the floors were visible. After the furniture was removed the team from The Hardwood Floor Store came in and removed the carpets and began the sanding process. Don kept us informed of the progress that was being made every step of the way and was extremely helpful in making suggestions on how repairs could be completed or the best stain color for the floors and stairs. Everyone that has come into our home since the floors have been completed has remarked on how wonderful they look and what a great job The Hardwood Floor Store did. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who is thinking about installing or refinishing hardwood floors!

They did a fantastic job! They were fast and efficient and there was no mess afterwards. The installer was very hardworking, he came early and was able to get it done quickly but it was still quality work and he did a great job! We got competitive quotes, and they were very reasonable. They are a super company!

They were fantastic. They are excellent. They took a floor that was so badly ruined...they hand sanded all of the spots that were bad. Then they sanded the whole floor with machines and it was completely dust free. Then they buffed the floors and put two coats of finish and it looks like glass. They did not give me a bit of trouble. Their price was excellent. Everything was perfect.

We were seeking a company to refinish most of the upstairs, and selected this company from Angie's List and on a recommendation from our carpet installer. The owner returned my call within half an hour, and came by the house the following day. A quote was emailed to me later that night and as we were happy with the estimate, work was scheduled for the following week. We wanted the work done while we were out of town so left the crew on their own to begin work the day we left.
The job took two and a half days to complete. We were very pleased with the quality of work, which involved sanding and application of a neutral stain the first day, followed by two coats of polyurethane the next two days. We dealt with the owners directly throughout the process and found both to be friendly, courteous, and professional. We elected to have them use a dust suppression system, which was well worth the extra money as we found absolutely no dust when we returned. We were cautioned by friends to ask specifically about the type of dust suppression system used as they apparently vary throughout the industry from people using shop-vacs and mops to this top of the line system, which is housed in a separate trailer, and costs upwards of $30,000.
Bottom line, we couldn't have been happier with the entire experience from start to finish; they are a truly professional company delivering a quality service.

Recommended by our contractor, Todd Walker, who was the best we've ever worked with. Walker said he'd had very positive experience with the Hardwood Floor Store, and since their estimate was much lower than we had expected, we didn't shop around. They really did a great job.

As a general rule, I would recommend installing hardwood flooring during the dryest, coolest month possible. The wood will naturally contract as it loses moisture with age, so the gaps between boards will widen with time. If the wood is also warm when installed, it will be slightly expanded, adding to the aging problem. Best if you can have the wood delivered long before the job is to be done, store it in the coolest, dryest place possible and, if practical, blow fans on it 24x7 to enhance drying before installation.

When I selected this company, I knew I had selected a big company that is well established. This was important to me because I don't trust just anyone to work on my hardwood floors. They did a great job and my floors look like new.
